Governor declares “State of Emergency” for Houston, Fillmore counties
By Daniel McGonigle
Argus Managing Editor
Governor Pawlenty on Tuesday signed an executive order declaring a State of Emergency for Fillmore and Houston Counties due to the weekend storms which blanketed the area.

The governor’s executive order triggers a damage assessment by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to determine if these counties are eligible for federal disaster assistance.

Because the storms, which dropped an estimated 10 inches of rain in some spots of Southeastern Minnesota, caused flooding and mud slides which resulted in damage to personal property, homes, businesses and the public infrastructure, Pawlenty could declare the State of Emergency.

“The resources of local, county and state governments must be fully utilized to insure the necessary response, damage assessment and recovery efforts,” stated Pawlenty. “The Department of Public Safety, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management will activate the Minnesota Emergency Operations Plan and provide assistance to the affected local governments in determining the need for supplementary disaster aid.”

All state agencies, in cooperation with the appropriate federal agencies, have been directed to provide the assistance necessary to help local governments respond to, and recover from the recent flood.
