District #299 Foundation Fun Night and Auction is Saturday |

This high-tech plasma cutter being used by Caledonia Area High School students, was partially purchased through funds from the District #299 Foundation. The photo above was taken as the computerized machine cut this “welcome” sign out of stainless steel. The sign will be polished and auctioned during Saturday night’s fund raiser. With all of the budget cuts that area schools have been forced to make due to declining enrollments and changes in state funding, it has become more than a little challenging trying to provide a well-rounded education for our citizens of tomorrow.

Sheriff Ely announces extra patrol during Prom |
The Houston County Sheriff’s Office will be putting extra deputies on the road this prom season looking for violation of underage consumption of alcohol. Two additional deputies will be assigned extra duty on Apr. 26, and May 3.

Harguth named Outstanding Ag Education teacher of the Year for Region VIII |
“It’s an award given to me by my peers in the Region,” said Brad Harguth, Ag teacher at Caledonia Area Schools. Harguth appreciated the designation. “It’s nice,” he said.
The Outstanding Ag Education teacher of the year award is given out on an annual basis.
Winning the award in Region VIII meant that he could be nominated at the state and national level.

Two Caledonia residents charged in rash of burglaries |
During the period of Mar. 26 through Mar. 31, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office received reports of six daytime residential burglaries. The Houston County sheriff’s Office, Spring Grove Police Department, Caledonia Police Department, and the Hokah Police Department investigated the burglaries.

Houston County Attorney Rick Jackson resigns |

Houston County Attorney Rick Jackson
Houston County Attorney Rick Jackson tendered his resignation, effective May 30, 2008, at the April 1 county board meeting.
In a written statement to the county board, Jackson, who has served as county attorney since 2000, stated:
“It is with mixed emotions that I announce to you my resignation as Houston County Attorney, effective May 30, 2008. After much thought and deliberation, I have accepted a position with the Criminal Division of the Olmsted County Attorney’s Office. I am returning to Olmsted County for the opportunity of heading up a special prosecution trial team. This move will allow me to return more to a criminal law/trial practice, which I very much enjoy. Finally, with my oldest child now heading to college, I could not ignore the financial benefits of this new position.
