The folks at Dollar General in Caledonia got into the Christmas spirit last week when the local store donated numerous items to Houston County Care and Share. Items included dolls, toys, DVD’s stuffed animals, and more. Caledonia Charities kicks of annual drive

The annual Caledonia Charities fund drive was kicked off this week, as Charities workers sent out solicitation letters and pledge cards. This year’s goal is to raise $11,000 for local and area charities. Caledonia. Brownsville man killed in roll-over August 29
|
|
Drew A. Budde, 22, of Brownsville, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Brownsville.
According to Houston County Sheriff Doug Ely, Budde died of injuries sustained when he was partially ejected from the vehicle he was driving that rolled over at 802 North Seventh Street at the northwest city limits of Brownsville.
The Brownsville First Responders, Tri State Ambulance Service, the Houston County Sheriff’s Department and the Houston County Coroner were called to the scene at 6:58 a.m.

City council proposes to raise 2010 tax levy by 20.71 percent
|
|
By a unanimous vote, the Caledonia City Council approved a motion to increase the 2010 levy by 20.71 percent. The majority of the levy increase would be to recoup the $101,364 the city lost during the past 10 months in local government aid (LGA) unallotments.

CJC project moves forward, bonds to be sold Sept. 29
|
|
With only one interested Houston Country resident attending the public hearing (former county commissioner Larry Graf) the county board listened to a 30-minute presentation made by Ehlers senior financial advisor Bruce Kimmel on the route the county should take in financing the criminal justice center (CJC).

Houston man in Horse Pulling Hall of Fame
|
|
Leonard Tostenson, a long-time horse-pulling enthusiast from rural Houston, was recently named to the Wisconsin Horse Pulling Association Hall of Fame. He is the first non-Wisconsin resident to be named to Wisconsin’s Hall of Fame. He’s shown here giving his horse Chester a hair cut.

City agrees to reimburse Randy Shefelbine for testifying in court and missing evidence money
|
|
By a 4-1 vote, the Caledonia City Council approved a motion to pay former Police Chief Randy Shefelbine time and one half and mileage that wasn’t reimbursed by the county when serving as an “expert witness” during felony court cases. Shefelbine retired from the Caledonia Police Department and moved to Iowa at the beginning of the summer. Shefelbine has been required to return to Caledonia to testify on behalf of the prosecution on a number of felony cases being handled by the county attorney’s office.
