Houston County Attorney Rick Jackson
Houston County Attorney Rick Jackson tendered his resignation, effective May 30, 2008, at the April 1 county board meeting.
In a written statement to the county board, Jackson, who has served as county attorney since 2000, stated:
“It is with mixed emotions that I announce to you my resignation as Houston County Attorney, effective May 30, 2008. After much thought and deliberation, I have accepted a position with the Criminal Division of the Olmsted County Attorney’s Office. I am returning to Olmsted County for the opportunity of heading up a special prosecution trial team. This move will allow me to return more to a criminal law/trial practice, which I very much enjoy. Finally, with my oldest child now heading to college, I could not ignore the financial benefits of this new position.

City council moves ahead with changes in zoning ordinances
|
minutes of public testimony, both pro and con, the Caledonia City Council voted 4-1 to approve changes in the city’s zoning ordinances. Most of the changes will have a direct impact on two projects Houston County is proposing- the criminal justice center (CJC) and a new highway department shop/headquarters. The action was taken March 24 following a public hearing held at the Municipal Auditorium, which attracted about 50 persons.

County moves ahead with drug investigator for Sheriff’s Office
|
By a 5-0 vote, the Houston County Board of Commissioners approved a motion to create a drug investigator for the Sheriff’s Department. After reviewing a job description for a week, the board moved forward with the drug investigator at the March 25 meeting.

Peggy Perry: ‘It was time to give something back this community’

“I felt like this was the time to get involved. I don’t work outside the house, so I would be available for committee meetings or special council meetings. Caledonia is a great place to live and we have developed some life-long friendships here. I was asked if I would consider being on the city council. I said I would. I feel I can contribute and give something back to this community.”

Local Masonic Lodge offering display space

“When you see deserted storefronts downtown, it’s not just very impressive. We’re trying to do something about that. That’s why we’re offering our window fronts for displays,” explained Ervin Barth of the Caledonia Masonic Lodge.

There more business flood recovery loans were approved by the Houston County Board during the March 25 meeting. The three loans will help Houston County businesses recover from the flash floods of August 2007.
