Pick-up fire at city garage
|
|
The Caledonia Fire Department was called to a pick-up fire at the city shop around 11 a.m. Friday morning. A 1994 Chevy pick-up was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. The truck, which is used as a back-up vehicle, caught fire and a city employee noticed smoke coming out of the garage. The truck was pulled out of the garage before much damage was incurred to the building or other vehicles stored inside. According to City Administrator Bob Nelson, several rafters above the truck were scorched, the lens of an overhead light and the wires inside a conduit were melted, but otherwise damage to the building was minimal. It is suspected the fire was due to an electrical malfunction. It appeared as if the pick-up was a total loss. Photo by Charlie Warner

Committee recommends St. Paul man to serve as interim superintendent
|
By Craig Moorhead
Special for the Argus
The ISD #299 committee appointed to look for an interim superintendent will bring its suggestion before the Caledonia School Board of Education on July 20.
The committee, made up of directors Charlie Wray, Matt Hendel and Jean Meyer are recommending that Bruce Thomas of St. Paul be offered the post. Thomas, a retired school administrator, has served as superintendent at school districts in Worthington, St. Cloud, and Wheaton, Minn.
When asked last week about the applicant, director Wray said that Thomas was “eminently qualified.”
School Board Chair Naomi Fruechte, who sat in on some of the hiring committee meetings, said that Thomas had “quite a bit of experience,” and good qualifications.
Directors will consider the committee’s recommendation at Monday’s board meeting. Even if Thomas is approved, no contract offer has been drawn up at this point, Wray said.

County to proceed with CJC project
|
With a green light from the city of Caledonia, the Houston County Board
has decided to move forward with the Houston County Criminal Justice
Center.
The city approved all five zoning requests needed to build the
structure at their June 29 meeting, and the county wasted no time in
responding to the opportunity.
County Commissioners unanimously passed two CJC related resolutions at
the July 7th meeting of the board. The first approved the construction
of the CJC, and set a maximum dollar amount of $19,306,135 for the
project. The second declared the county’s intention to finance the
local government portion of the cost with bonding.

Eliott Kranz is named Educator of the Year
|
|
By Courtney Gran
Argus Student Intern
Each school year Caledonia teachers kindergarten through 12th grade nominate a teacher in District #299 that he or she feels deserves the honor of Educator of the Year. The 2008-2009 District 299 Educator of the Year is choir director Eliott Kranz.
“I am very humbled and honored that my fellow colleagues thought I deserved this.” Kranz said of the award adding that he considers his students the reason he got this honor. “I got this award not because of me, it is my students.”
The nominations for the honor are based on observations each teacher makes about his or her fellow teachers throughout the school year. The nominated teachers are teachers that went above and beyond the normal requirements to help out their students.
After all the nominations have been made a ballot is made up of all the nominees. This year about five to six names were on the ballot. The winner is announced at the teacher’s end of the year party.
Past winners include: 2007-2008: Ken Van Den Boom; 2006-2007: Cindy Staggemeyer; 2005-2006: Carol Nelson.
