Sheriff’s Office continues push for county drug investigator
|
Drug dealers are a lot like rats in a grainery. When a cat moves in, the rats move on to another grainery. Surrounding counties have been working hard to fight drug trafficking, and the rats have moved into Houston County. That, in a nutshell, is what County Sheriff Doug Ely and Chief Deputy Scott Yeiter told the Houston County Board during the March 18 board meeting.

As enrollment numbers decline, and as the state government, under the shattered leadership of Governor Pawlenty continues to balance their budgets on the backs of local units of government, the Caledonia Area School Board was forced to make some reductions to next year’s educational programs and positions.

Caledonia Area Schools making progress towards AYP improvement

Ask most people who are in the business of education and it is never a matter of if, but when.
Eventually AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) is going to get every district was always the thinking.
Caledonia has already failed the measure by not meeting the proficiency standards in special education reading.

County approves three-year contract with Local 49’ers
|
The Houston County Board approved a three-year contract with the Local 49’ers Union, which included a three percent cost of living adjustment (COLA) increase in 2008, a five percent COLA increase in 2009 and a five percent COLA increase in 2010. The COLA increase in 2009 will be broken up, with two percent kicking in on Jan. 1 and the other three percent on July 1. In 2010, union employees will receive a three percent COLA on Jan. 1 and a two percent COLA on July 1.

County looking at contracting with DOC for probation services
|
The Houston County Board spent about 30 minutes discussing the pros and cons of contracting for probation services directly with the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) during the March 18 meeting. DOC District Supervisor Rena Patterson was on hand to review the various options available to the county.
