Hittin’ the trail: A ride with area trail groomer is learning experience

More snow came last week, followed by a biting wind. In La Crescent and other Houston County cities, snow throwers were tossing white plumes while shovelers labored. For snowmobilers, it was beautiful.

County board listens to zoning rights issues…again
 The Houston County Board room was fill to capacity again Jan. 12 as commissioners reviewed a zoning issue that involved Melvin Davy of Brownsville Township. Two weeks earlier the county board spent more than an hour listening to testimony during a public hearing concerning a proposed interim use permit before they decided not to approve the additional zoning regulations.

Teachers’ contract ratified one day before the deadline

At a Jan. 14 meeting held one day after a mediation with teachers’ representatives, and one day before state fines would have been imposed for failure to reach an agreement, the ISD #299 board unanimously approved a two-year contract with teachers. High school music instructor Eliott Kranz  served as a one of the negotiators for the association. He explained at the meeting that on average, teachers will receive a little less than one percent in pay hikes during the contract. Thursday night’s action alleviated a state-imposed fine of approximately $23,000.

Ice is thick and fish are biting in Mississippi River backwaters

“It came and went real quick. When we first had ice, the fishermen were really getting some nice sized blue gills, and lots of them. But they’ve been sporadic for the last couple of weeks,” DNR Conservation Officer Scott Fritz began last week when asked how the Mississippi River backwaters winter fishing had been going.

Caledonia man levels $101K lawsuit against La Crescent
La Crescent Police Officers Michael Ernster and Luke Ahlschlager, La Crescent City Attorney William Von Arx, as well as the City of La Crescent have all been named as defendants in a civil rights lawsuit that was recently filed in Houston County District Court by Tory Connor, 19, of Caledonia.

IDS #299 holds organizational meeting, teacher contracts pending
On Jan. 4 ISD #299 directors elected officers for 2010. Naomi Fruechte will again serve as chairperson. Matt Hendel was re-elected vice-chairman. Jean Meyer will once again serve as clerk, while Michelle Werner will take over as treasurer. John Klug will serve as legislative liaison.
