Veterans Day observed in Caledonia
|
|
Veterans Day was celebrated Wednesday in Caledonia, with programs at
the public and private schools. The Caledonia Area Elementary School
held a program Wednesday morning that included patriotic songs, the
reading of the list of Caledonia-area veterans, the laying of the
wreath and playing of taps. In the photo above, Lauren Perry plays taps
as Gerald Noel contemplates the somber moment.
At left, Carson Bullerman reads a short bio about his father, who was a veteran.

“When we still heard the five-inch guns firing, we didn’t have to get too nervous. But when we heard the 50 calibers, that’s when things got nerve-wracking,” recalled Harold Van Gundy of rural Houston about his three-year stint in the U.S. Navy.

Work begins on County Historical Society’s addition
|
|
After more than 12 years in the planning, work began on the 10,600 square foot addition to the Houston County Historical Society Museum in Caledonia Tuesday, Nov. 10. Crews from Ken Krumrie’s Tree Service of Dakota cut down a stand of spruce and maple trees just west of the Historical Society’s Historic Village at the Houston County Fair Grounds. Once the trees were felled, Hokah logger Gary Lee cut the logs up and hauled them off. Excavation of the 212-foot long building was to begin Wednesday morning, as crews hope to have footings poured, the basement walls and floor completed, and the first floor deck completed before winter freeze up. The Caledonia City Council granted a setback variance that was needed during their Nov. 9 meeting. It’s full speed ahead for the project, which is estimated to cost around $750,000. Caledonia and Fillmore Central may meet November 18 to begin discussion of shared superintendent
|
According to an article written by Lisa Brainard of the
Preston-Lanesboro Republican-Leader, Fillmore Central School Board
members decided by consensus to respond favorably to a request by the
Caledonia School Board for a meeting to look at the potential for
sharing a superintendent starting in the 2010-11 school year.
The Fillmore Central and Caledonia School Boards have set a tentative
meeting date of Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m., at the Caledonia School,
to initially take a look at the idea of sharing a superintendent
position. The full boards plan to meet, so the meeting will be open to
the public.

Houston County still waiting for its share of the H1N1 vaccine
|
|
“This certainly wasn’t the way we were envisioning this. We began planning for an H1N1 outbreak in April. Earlier this fall we set up in-school vaccination clinics and planned to have all of the school aged kids vaccinated in November. As of today (Thursday) we haven’t even received any vaccinations. Winona and Fillmore counties have. But we haven’t. I really don’t understand why,” said Houston County Public Health Nursing Director Deb Rock.
