A busy day at the Houston County Airport. This photo was taken in September. The airplane on the far right is Bemidji Airlines flying contract for UPS.  They just filled two delivery trucks from the plane.  The twin in the back was a businessman who flew in that morning. The single engine aircraft is a plane that flew in the day prior and tied down for the night. The fourth plane is owned by Benson Technical Work of Caledonia.                                   Photo submitted by Eric Benson

The future of the Houston County Airport just might be a little brighter, thanks to some federal and state programs that are available.

Yucatan pole shed a total loss following Oct. 12 fire
A metal pole shed containing 350 big round bales was a total loss following a fire at the Burdell Hahn farm in Yucatan Township. Firefighters from Caledonia, Houston, Spring Grove and Rushford battled the Oct. 12 blaze.
The fire was reported late morning and Caledonia firemen responded to the mutual aid call around 11:30 a.m. A pumper truck was also dispatched from the Eitzen Fire Department, which was used to pump water out of a nearby river and into tanker trucks from the other four fire departments.
It took more than 10 hours and tens of thousands of gallons of water to put out the fire. Firefighters were able to keep the blaze limited to the shed and no damage was reported to nearby out buildings or the Hahn home.
The cause of the fire is unknown. The State Fire Marshal’s office was notified.

State and federal money available for airport expansion project

By Charlie Warner
Argus News Editor

The future of the Houston County Airport just might be a little brighter, thanks to some federal and state programs that are available.

The county’s airport, located just south of Caledonia, lost its GPS system last year because of runway clearance issues. That meant no flights could be permitted in or out of the airport during foggy weather or if the cloud ceiling was too low.

The aging runway was also an issue. Built in the mid-1970’s, the runway is in such bad condition if the county doesn’t take steps to improve it, state and federal agencies will probably shut it down.

According to Eric Benson, chairman of the Houston County Airport Commission, there are state and federal funds available to not only bring the airport back into compliance to have its GPS system reactivated, but also to build a new 4,000-foot runway and locate a state-fo-the-art weather station there.

Price tag for razing buildings for justice center project is much less than anticipated

By Charlie Warner
Argus News Editor

Houston County continued to receive good news concerning construction costs of the justice center, which will be built in downtown Caledonia beginning next spring. Demolition bids were opened at the Oct. 13 board meeting, which came in much lower than anticipated.

The low bid of $20,749 submitted by Generation X Construction of Rushford to raze three houses and the Sheriff Department’s garage was about $60,000 less than what was estimated last year. The county received six bids ranging from just under $60,000 to Generation X’s low bid to remove the three homes the county purchased several years ago and the stone five-stall garage to make way for the justice center.
