County board approves 75% funding for 4-H program
After learning of the full ramifications of cutting the funding in the 2009 budget for the U of M Extension’s 4-H program by 50 percent, the Houston County Board voted unanimously to reduce the cut to 25 percent. In essence, that action “saved” the county’s 4-H participation at the Houston County Fair, and according to fair board chair Elden Pohlman, saved the fair.

Bison herd along Highway 44 draws lots of attention

Winter brings a series of changes to the Houston County landscape each year; wind-blown snowdrifts, busy snowmobile trails, and the sudden appearance of a herd of bison along Highway 44 west of Caledonia. The shaggy beasts that stoically make their winter residence near the junction of Highway 44 and Gap Drive belong to Steve and Linda Fruechte of Buffalo Hills Bison, local bison ranchers since 1993.

Adopt a Farm Program will help improve Bobwhite quail habitat
The quest to restore Bobwhite quail habitat in Southeastern Minnesota, initiated by Thurman Tucker a few years ago and continued with local support, will add some new recruits to the roster. This spring students will get a lesson in conservation as they team with the local Quail Forever chapter to kick off the Adopt a Farm Program.

City cuts $97,995 from budget, broaches 36-hour work week
Painful cuts to cope with the anticipated state cuts to local government aid (LGA) took up a major portion of the Feb. 23 Caledonia City Council meeting. The council approved $97,995 in cuts to the 2009 budget.
