Marilyn Kennedy of Caledonia isn’t a big gambler. She said she buys two Powerball tickets every week…one for Wednesday night’s drawing and the other for Saturday night. And if she’s got a spare Washington laying around in her purse, she might buy a scratch ticket or two.

E&P Fisheries of New Albin provides specialty dish for folks in New York

Three gravity boxes were parked overnight in Ed Strong’s workshop last week, where the temperature held just above freezing. They’re the kind of wagons we all see in the fall, hauling corn, oats, or beans. In the morning a semi with a reefer trailer pulled up to Strong’s New Albin business, E&P Fisheries. A farm elevator was positioned into the truck, and the first wagon’s spout was opened. A “crop” emerged that wasn’t grain.  It was a stream of carp.

Persons who have enjoyed Whispering Hills Girl Scout Camp near Yucatan received some good news last week. The 836-acre camp, located on a dead-end road just off County Road 15 in Yucatan Township near the Houston-Fillmore County line won’t be sold.

Dean Gavin found guilty of criminal sexual conduct
Dean Joseph Gavin, 39, of Caledonia was found guilty of criminal sexual conduct-second degree-fear great bodily harm in Houston District Court in Caledonia on Feb. 3. He had been charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts each of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, first-degree burglary, domestic assault, domestic assault by strangulation and single counts of terroristic threats and interfering with a 911 call stemming from an incident that occurred last August in Caledonia.

Police department receives state Safe and Sober Award

The Caledonia Police Department was a third place winner in the Safe and Sober contest sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. The department received a plaque and a $1,000 grant for its efforts. For the sixth time since 1996, the Caledonia Police Department has been awarded the Safe and Sober Award by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Snow Days observed next week

Caledonia Area High School will be observing Snow Days next week. The Snow Days Royalty, shown above, was selected by the student body. The Snow Days Queen and King will be chosen from this group of “snow lovers.” They are, in front from left, Levi Schmitz, Angela Augedahl, Shannon Doering and Travis Frank. In the back, Doug Welscher, Rachel Bauer and Royal Sonsalla. Not shown, Cassy Messner. The Snow Days Coronation and “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” competition will be held Thursday, beginning at 2 p.m. in the auditorium. Dress up days include: Monday- Retro Day- pick a decade to dress like and wear old jerseys and uniforms from the past; Tuesday- Beach/summer day- dress like you’re going to the beach; Wednesday- Dodge ball/twin day- dress like your team or grab a twin for the day; Thursday- Crazy color day; Friday- Stoplight day- wear red if you are in a relationship, green if you are single or yellow if you have crush.
