Caledonia Area Schools making progress towards AYP improvement |
Ask most people who are in the business of education and it is never a matter of if, but when.
Eventually AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) is going to get every district was always the thinking.
Caledonia has already failed the measure by not meeting the proficiency standards in special education reading.

County approves three-year contract with Local 49’ers |
The Houston County Board approved a three-year contract with the Local 49’ers Union, which included a three percent cost of living adjustment (COLA) increase in 2008, a five percent COLA increase in 2009 and a five percent COLA increase in 2010. The COLA increase in 2009 will be broken up, with two percent kicking in on Jan. 1 and the other three percent on July 1. In 2010, union employees will receive a three percent COLA on Jan. 1 and a two percent COLA on July 1.

County looking at contracting with DOC for probation services |
The Houston County Board spent about 30 minutes discussing the pros and cons of contracting for probation services directly with the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) during the March 18 meeting. DOC District Supervisor Rena Patterson was on hand to review the various options available to the county.

Career Day held at local middle school |

Caledonia area fifth through eighth graders had an opportunity to have their horizons broadened last Thursday when Earle Kyle, Solar System Ambassador of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, gave a presentation on current and future plans for space exploration. Kyle, who worked for Honeywell, Inc. in the Twin Cities during the Apollo project, was on hand at the Kennedy Space Center in 1969 when Apollo 11 lifted off for the first manned trip to the moon. Science fair held at CAES |

Fourth and fifth grade students at Caledonia Area Elementary
School were the focus of attention Tuesday during the annual science
fair. Their classrooms were open to the public Tuesday afternoon and
evening, and a large crowd of parents, grandparents, and relatives
turned out to view the various science projects, and to have the

Perry is appointed to Caledonia City Council |
By a 3-1 vote, the Caledonia City Council approved the appointment of
Peggy Perry as councilmember for the remainder of the year. The action
was taken during a special council meeting at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday,
March 19.
Perry will fill the council spot vacated when former Councilman Paul
Fisch tendered his resignation Feb. 29. Fisch, who served as a
councilman for the past nine years, was re-elected to his third term on
the council in November, 2006.
