County board reviews potential tax increases on the horizon
|
Stating the numbers are not in concrete and purely speculative, Houston County Financial Director Casey Bradley reviewed some calculations he worked up on debt service and how it would impact county taxpayers. Bradley was following through on a request made by the county board so they would have a better idea on how two large construction projects, the criminal justice center and the highway department complex, could be funded.

County buys back-up generator for County Community Services
|
Figuring they were saving more than $8,700 in the storage shelving bid received for the County Community Services building, the Houston County Board unanimously approved a motion to purchase a slightly used generator for $9,500 from Viking Electric of Spring Grove.

Every young man dreams of being a cowboy. At least that’s my perception of the matter. I must admit that its always seemed an appealing occupation to me; the freedom, ruggedness, work ethic, horses, unique apparel, and even its own genre of music round out some of the positives. Of course, the definition of a cowboy has changed over the years and many would argue the authentic cowboy has rode off into the sunset for the last time.

Advance to state golf meet
|
|
Caledonia/Spring Grove girls and boys golf teams advanced two Warriors to the Minnesota Class AA Golf Tournament, which will be held June 3 and 4 in Jordan. Molly Mullins shot a 90 and Isaac Schiltz shot a 79. The Sub-Section 1AA champion boys team finished third in the section meet with a 327 stroke total behind Section 1AA champs Rochester Lourdes (315) and runners-up Red Wing (321). The Sub-Section 1AA runners-up Warrior girls also placed third in the Section 1AA Tournament played May 26 at The Bridges Golf Course in Winona with a 370 total. Red Wing placed first with a 351-stroke total, while Lake City placed second at 356. Submitted photo

Solum property brought into compliance with purchases of adjoining properties
|
|
A long-running legal battle over zoning issues between Houston County and Matthew and Beth Solum, 23642 Maple Leaf Drive in Spring Grove Township was resolved earlier this month. The county had taken the Solums to court for purchasing a non-ag building (a single family dwelling) on class 3 soils on less than 40 acres.

Paul DeMorett hired as new middle/high school principal
|
A new middle/high school principal was hired at the May 18 meeting of the ISD #299 school board.
Current principal Ronald Helmers will be retiring at the end of the school year. The board voted unanimously to hire Paul DeMorett, who currently serves as K-12 principal at Tower-Soudan School in St. Louis County (near Vermilion Lake). DeMoret’s contract is for the 2009-2010 school year at a salary of $85,000.
