The American Cancer Society (ACS) celebrated the one year anniversary of the “Freedom to Breathd” Act in Minnesota last week. Organizers and volunteers from the Houston County Relay for Life came to the get-together at Good Times on Wednesday. The occasion was marked with sandwiches, salad, and a birthday cake.

Camp Winnebago turns 40, puts on the Ritz last weekend

Guests arriving at Camp Winnebago, a private non-profit organization located on a 116 acre farm south of Caledonia, marks its 40th anniversary this year. The camp’s purpose is “to enhance, through a diversity of experiences, the self-worth, independence, and quality of life of people with developmental disabilities.”

City council, fire department mend fences during Sept. 24 meeting
A “clearing of the air” occurred in the Caledonia City Council chambers Sept. 24 when the city council, a large contingency of Caledonia firemen, and several representatives of the Rural Fire Association met for two hours. A special meeting was called to settle some differences between the city council and the fire department when it came to purchasing equipment.

Our neighbors to the west will be celebrating their fall festival this Saturday with UffDa Fest. For the schedule of events lined up for the fun-filled day, see page 10. One of the promotions of the annual fall festival is the scarecrow contest. Shown above are two of the downtown displays.

The first annual UffDa Fest will be held this Saturday in Spring Grove. Festival events are planned for people of all ages and interests, and all events will take place in and around Viking Memorial Park in downtown Spring Grove.

Sexual predators forum to be held in Hokah
The Hokah and La Crescent Police Departments are hosting a community dialogue surrounding sexual predators on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hokah Fire Department, 9 Mill Street.
Come to the free forum to hear panelists from the Minnesota Department of Corrections, the Jacob Wetterling Foundation, and Houston County Women’s Resources, along with local law enforcement discuss questions such as how safe are our communities, and how safe are our children. Some of these professionals assess, supervise, monitor, and study sexual predators that live among us. Some of these professionals work with the victims and their families.
This free community forum is your opportunity to learn about characteristics of sexual predators and also to learn how to recognize signs of sexual abuse. This dialog will help you understand what you need to do to protect yourself, your family, and your community. Following the panel discussion, you will have the opportunity to ask the panelists questions.

Homecoming 2008 is being held this week at Caledonia Area High School. The student body selected five senior girls and five senior boys as Homecoming Queen and King candidates. They are, in front from left, Megan King, Maria Drenckhahn, Sandy Kinneberg, Erica Myhre, and Jenna Burmester. In back, Andy Bauer, Colin Gluch, Eddie Hodges, and Ryan Goetzinger. Homecoming activities include home volleyball games against Spring Grove Monday night and St. Charles Thursday night, a home boys soccer game against PEM Tuesday night, girls soccer games at Winona High Tuesday night and PEM Thursday night, the Homecoming coronation Friday at 10 a.m. in the high school auditorium, a pep fest at 2 p.m. Friday followed by the home football game against Chatfield, and the Homecoming dance following the football game.                     Photo by Charlie Warner
