State Court of Appeals rules in county’s favor in Solum case
Eleven months after the Houston County Board unanimously approved a motion to deny an after-the-fact conditional use permit (CUP) for Spring Grove Township residents Matthew and Beth Solum, the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled in the county’s favor. The court handed down the ruling last Tuesday, Sept. 16. Area farmers have been busy chopping corn for their silos and are preparing for the bean harvest, which should get underway this week. In the top photo, a field of yellow soybeans is a stark contrast to the green waterways. In the middle photo, bean pods have filled and are drying down. Caledonia teens who became blood donors encourage others

“I did it because I could. I have plenty of good, healthy blood. It felt good being able to help someone else. I’m sure I will donate blood in the future. And, I plan to encourage some of my friends.”
That’s what Caledonia High School junior Casey Klug said about being a donor when the American Red Cross Bloodmobile was in town this past summer. Up until July 1 of this year, a person had to be at least 17 years old to be a blood donor. Now, with parental approval, 16 year-olds in Minnesota can be blood donors. Klug, and CHS senior Courtney Gran (pictured above) were both first-time donors during the July 22 Bloodmobile stop at the Four Seasons Community Center. The two spent a few minutes last week recalling their first time being a blood donor.   Photo by Charlie Warner
