Ingvalson dairy expansion put on hold as MPCA reviews plan
On June 1 it appeared as if the Ingvalson Hilltop Farms expansion project was “full speed ahead.” The Houston County Board unanimously approved the conditional use permit needed for the expansion, which would include a state-of-the-art manure handling system and increasing the existing dairy herd by 300 animal units to 967.

Houston County applies for FEMA disaster assistance funds…again
For the third time in four years, Houston County will be applying for federal disaster money. Houston County EMS Coordinator Kurt Kuhlers informed the county board that portions of the county had sustained approximately $500,000 in flood damages from torrential rains that struck June 23.

City to move forward with South Street sewer project
During a special meeting held July 6, the Caledonia City Council decided to go with the lesser of two evils when it came to a sanitary sewer repair project. The council decided to take the less costly route to repair a two-block portion of sanitary sewer line on South Street between Marshal and Pine.

Pumping gas for nearly 65 years, New Albin man just keeps going

Leonard Heiderscheit, who is 91 years young, has been a fixture at the New Albin gas station for nearly 65 years. He claims working every day has kept him young.

Leonard Heiderscheit only left New Albin once, and that was to join the U. S. Army during World War II. “About 68 years ago I was trying to stay alive in a foxhole,” he remembered recently, “up in the Aleutian islands.”
