Austin Goergen, a CHS sophomore, came home with a gold medal in Minnesota’s Class AA 285 pound division on Saturday in St. Paul. The unranked Warrior put himself among the elite of Caledonia’s wrestling program with his four victories.  Troy Frank, a senior, was sixth at 215 pounds.

For the fourth straight year Caledonia and La Crescent will meet in the Section 1AA East Sub-section tournament. The #3-seeded Warriors won their first round game over #6 Lewiston-Altura 79-45 last Thursday night in Caledonia. The #2 Lancers topped #7 Winona Cotter 62-42.

After three straight appearances at “The Big Dance,” including a Class AA State Championship last March, the Caledonia girls basketball team’s season ended a little earlier than local fans have become accustomed to.

Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove is sending two of its wrestlers to the state tournament this weekend.  Troy Frank won the Section 1AA 215 pound title while Austin Goergen was second at 285 pounds. They will wrestle in the preliminaries at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 4, at the Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul.

Even though they lost two of three games last week to end the regular season, Warrior boys basketball coach Josh Diersen feels his team is ready for tournament play. The Warriors avenged a Jan. 18 loss to Rushford-Peterson by beating the Trojans 75-55 Feb. 23. Cal then went on the road Feb. 25 and lost to state-ranked Plainview-Elgin-Millville 67-49. The Warriors hosted Class AAA Austin Feb. 27 and dropped an overtime thriller 64-54.
