Floyd and Doris Austin PDF Print
Floyd Everett Austin, 93, died Wed., Feb. 3, 2010 at Caledonia Care and Rehab, Caledonia, Minn. Doris Gladys (Pederson) Austin died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at Caledonia Care and Rehab, Caledonia.

Floyd was born May 27, 1916 at the family farm in Newburg, rural Mabel, Minn. to Christ and Florence (Olin) Austin. Doris was born Dec. 19, 1921 at the family farm in Amherst Twp., rural Lanesboro, Minn. to Emil and Sophia (Frogner) Pederson. Floyd and Doris were united in marriage on Nov. 15, 1941. They farmed the Austin family farm at Newburg for 38 years. After retiring they moved to Spring Grove, Minn. and had resided the last eight years at Caledonia Care & Rehab in Caledonia. In November, 2009 they celebrated 68 years of marriage.

Floyd and Doris are survived by their son Everett (Marilyn) Austin, Caledonia; daughter Darlene (George) Bradner, Phoenix, Ariz.; three granddaughters and seven great-granchildren; and a sister-in-law Jean Pederson, Kenyon, Minn. Floyd was preceded in death by an infant brother Grant, and brother Gerald Austin, Rockford, Ill. Doris was preceded in death by her brothers Elmer Nelson, Mabel; Perry, Henry and Carl Pederson, Harmony, Minn.; Alvin Pederson, Kenyon; and sisters Evelyn Gleisner, Harmony, and Josephine Austin, Rockford.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 9, 5 to 7 p.m. at Caledonia Care & Rehab, Caledonia.

 Funeral services will be Wed., Feb. 10, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Caledonia United Methodist Church, Caledonia with visitation at 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be at the Newburg UMC Cemetery, Newburg, Minn.

LaVern "Sonny" Sherriff PDF Print
LaVern L. “Sonny” Sherriff, age 68, of Winona, Minn., died on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at his home.

He was born on Jan. 26, 1942, in Caledonia, Minn., to LaVern J. and Helen (Pieper) Sherriff. He married Yula Langerud on Dec. 14, 1963; they later divorced. On June 1, 1985, he married Sharon Brand Poulin. LaVern attended St. John’s Lutheran School and Caledonia High School. He served his country with the United States Army and achieved the rank of Motor Sergeant. LaVern was very proud of his service to his country during the Vietnam War Era. He worked in construction and was a truck driver for Winona Excavating and Winona Plumbing.

He is survived by his mother, Helen Paris, Winona; wife Sharon Sherriff, Winona; children, Kimberly Smith, Austin, Minn.; Kristi Dailey, Delano, Fla.; Timothy (Rochelle) Poulin, Winona; Theresa (Randy) Palmer, Ridgeway, Minn.; and Raymond (Beth) Poulin, Winona; 12 grandchildren;  sisters, Loretta (Leonard) Klug and Helen (Curtis) Lippie; and sister-in-law, Barb (Norm) Andrews.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Reverend Richard A. Moore officiated. Following the service, the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9 provided full military honors outside of the church.   Burial will be at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia.
 
Margaret "Peg" Colleran PDF Print
pegcolleran.jpgMargaret Josephine Colleran, age 90, died on Jan. 30, 2010 in St. Paul, Minn.

Peg was born in La Crosse to Hilda and John J. Anderson on Feb. 17, 1919. She married Robert J. Colleran in 1941. After raising eight children while living in St. Joseph Ridge, Peg returned to college and completed her BSN degree at Viterbo College when she turned 53, and began work at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse. She worked as a Psychiatric Nurse until her retirement at age 70. Peg then joined the Peace Corps and assisted St. John’s Hospital in Montserrat, West Indies develop a psychiatric program. She earned the Kennedy Peace Corps Volunteer of the Year Award for the West Indies in 1990 for her service during Hurricane Andrew which struck the island during her enlistment. Upon returning from her service, she retired to Brownsville, Minn. and continued to do volunteer work with RSVP in La Crosse, Houston County Women’s Resources and as a Pen Pal to area school children. She moved to The Wellington residences in St. Paul in 2006.

Peg was preceded in death by her husband Robert Sr., sons Robert Jr., Dennis J., and Timothy J.; and a brother Charles Anderson.

She is survived by sons Michael, Ashland, Ore.; James Patrick, Shreveport, La.; daughters Sarah (Babak) Colleran-Armajani, Mendota Heights, Minn.; Bridgit (Peter) Albrecht, Minneapolis, Minn.; Maggie (Dave) Colleran-Hey, Brownsville; daughter-in-law Barbara Allen-Colleran, Portland, Ore., seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister Marion Thompson, La Crescent, Minn.; and brother John (Audrey) Anderson, San Diego, Calif.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Brownsville on Friday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow at noon. Memorials may be directed in her name to the Red Cross for Haitian Relief, or Houston County Semcac Food Shelves.

julieschulte.jpgJulie A. Schulte, 50, of Dorchester, Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa.

Julie Ann Schulte was born on June 11, 1959 in Waukon, the daughter of Vernis and Irene (Mangels) Engelhardt. She attended the Little Red School House in the Forest Mills area, graduated from Waukon High School in 1977 and attended NICC in Calmer, Iowa. On Sept. 8, 1990 she married Dave Schulte at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon. They farmed together in Waterloo Township in rural Dorchester where they raised crops, hogs and beef cattle. Julie worked in the Allamakee County Assessor’s Office from 1979 until 1995. She then started a career working with persons with disabilities at TASC Inc. in Waukon and she was currently working at ABLE in Caledonia, Minn. where she served on several boards.

Julie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dorchester where she was active in its ladies circles and was a CCD teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Dave Schulte of Dorchester; four children: Benjamin, Nicole, Matthew and Michael, all at home; a brother, Dean (Sue) Engelhardt,  Fairfax Station, Va.; a special aunt, Lolita Engelhardt, Postville, Iowa; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lloyd and Ruth Ann Schulte, Waukon; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rick Schulte, San Raman, Calif.; Randy (Julie) Schulte, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; Craig (Amy) Schulte, Eagan, Minn. and Laurie (Jeff) Carpenter, Appleton, Wis.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her mother-in-law, Shirley Schulte; a grandmother, Paula Mangels and an uncle, Oran Engelhardt.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Dorchester Catholic Church in Dorchester, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 - 7 p.m. Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 3 p.m. scripture service.

alkunst_web.jpgAloysius (Al) Theodore Kunst, 90, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, January 24, 2010, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake, with his family at his side. He resided at the care center for two months after being diagnosed with multiple brain tumors.

Al was born in Caledonia, Minn., to Frank Kunst and Eva Hill, on March 8, 1919. On August 1, 1938 he married Augusta Onstad from Spring Grove, Minn., at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, in Caledonia.

Al served in the U.S. Army 1942-1944. His outfit was sent to the Philippines in preparation for deployment to Japan. After returning from the Army, he managed a few lumber yards for Hayes-Lucas and B.F. Nelson and later became a salesman for Certainteed Corporation. He and Augusta moved thirteen times and lived in eight different cities. In 1965 they made their home in Clear Lake, Iowa, where they eventually celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake, the Knights of Columbus, and the VFW.

He is survived by his two sons, David Kunst and his wife Jenni Samuel of Newport Beach, Calif., and Peter Kunst and his wife Nora Angel of Cottonwood, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Carlton Onstad and his wife Beulah of Spring Grove.

He was preceded in death by his wife Augusta; son John; three sisters; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law.

A mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 noon, Saturday Jan. 30, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Msgr. Donald P. Schmitz will officiate and burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Al Kunst.

junehanke_web.jpgJune M. Hanke, 78, of Caledonia, died Sunday, January 24, 2010, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.

She was born June 9, 1931, in La Crosse, Wis., to Roy and Freda (Palmlund) Hanke. June was a 1949 graduate of Caledonia High School. She then attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. June was employed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for 38 years, retiring in 1993.

Survivors include one sister, Lois Goetzinger of Caledonia; one brother, Dale (Donna) Hanke of Mankato, Minn.; one nephew, Mark (Bonnie) Goetzinger of Caledonia; five nieces, Denice Goetzinger of Caledonia, Donnelle (Joe) Casler of Columbia, Mo., Deanne (Mark) Saari of Rush City, Minn.; Sandra Block of Minneapolis, Minn., and Lorilyn Dehning of Spring Grove, Minn.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

June was preceded in death by her twin sister at birth; one brother-in-law, Casey Goetzinger; and two nephews, Lee Hanke and Neil Goetzinger.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 28, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at Zion Evangelical Church,  Brownsville. Pastor Brian Cuda will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Evangelical Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Zion Evangelical Church in Brownsville or the Houston County Historical Society. Aloysius “Al” T. Kunst, 90, of Clear Lake, Iowa, formerly of Caledonia, Minn. died Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. A complete obituary will run in next week’s paper.

Hildor Edith Poppe, age 92, of Overland Park, Kan. died on Jan. 19, 2010 at Vintage Park at Stanley, Kan.

Hildor was born on March 16, 1917 in Caledonia, Minn. to Albert and Freida Somermeyer.  She was raised in Jefferson Township, Caledonia. She was united in marriage to Harold Poppe on Feb. 1, 1947 and lived in Houston, Minn. She was a school teacher holding a masters degree in history, teaching in elementary schools.  She participated in flower shows and garden clubs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Poppe in 2005. She is survived by two daughters, Suzanne (Dale) Johnson, Ft. Collins, Colo.; Barb (Bill) Lehmer, Olathe, Kan.; two sons, Doug (Zin) Naperville, Ill.; and Craig (Kathy), Rochester, Minn.; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren, and one sister, Joyce Bolduan, Caledonia.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 23, 2010 at Countryside Church in Olathe, Ks. Inurnment will take place at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kan.  at a later date.
