Vera J. Gunelson, 61, died on Aug. 19, 2010 at her home in Minnetonka. She was born in La Crosse on Feb. 24, 1949 and grew up in Spring Grove.

Vera has been active in the organizations of Past Ultreya representative of TC-Cursillo, Alpha Gamma Delta (AGD) Sorority and alumni association treasurer, past president of the North Star Chapter of the National Association of Accountants (NAA) and past president of the Eisenhower Elementary PTO.

She was also an active volunteer in multiple charity fundraising including MOCA (MN Ovarian Cancer Assoc.), March of Dimes, Loaves & Fishes, and American Cancer Society.

Survivors include her husband, John P. Gunelson; children, Michael and Melissa Gunelson; parents, Vernon and Georgia Roble; and brothers, Mark Roble and Stuart (Kim) Roble.

A Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at St. Therese Catholic Church,  Deephaven. Interment was at the Resurrection Cemetery, Shorewood.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to MOCA (Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance).

Thomas G. “Tom” Pottratz, 58, of Eitzen, Minn., died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at his home.

He was born June 11, 1952, in La Crosse, Wis., to George and Lucille (Fliehe) Pottratz. Tom graduated from Caledonia High School in 1970. He was an over-the-road truck driver.  Tom was an active member of the Eitzen Fire Department for many years.

Survivors include his mother, Lucille of Caledonia, Minn.; his sisters, Patricia (John) Nystuen, Punta Gorda, Fla. and Mary (Russ) Georgesen, Goodyear, Ariz.; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, George.

Funeral sevices will be Thursday, August 26, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen. Rev. Kent A. Meyer, Ph.D. and Rev. Debra R. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen, on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and also on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to the Houston County National Wild Turkey Federation or the South East Minnesota White Tail Unlimited.

Laurine Schroeder PDF Print
Laurine L. Schroeder, 92, of Caledonia, Minn., died peacefully on Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at the home of her son in rural Caledonia, surrounded by her family.

Laurine was born March 1, 1918, in Houston, Minn., to Carl “Charlie” and Helma (Runningen) Krockow. She was a graduate of Houston High School and worked as a waitress in town.  On Oct. 4, 1938, she married Victor Schroeder of Caledonia and he preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1998.  They farmed together in rural Caledonia and raised five children.

Laurine was an active member at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Caledonia.  Following her husband’s death, she moved to Belle Plaine, Minn., to live with her daughter and son-in-law for three years.  She later moved to Spring Grove Assisted Living for four years.

Laurine is survived by her daughter-in-law Carol Schroeder,  Hong Kong; her son Stanley (Diane) Schroeder, Caledonia; her son Dean (Mary) Schroeder, Caledonia; her daughter Donna (John) Zeitler, Belle Plaine, Minn.; her son Rolf (Jean) Schroeder, Rochester, Minn.; her sister Marjorie Teed, Viroqua, Wis.; 19 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Laurine was preceded in death by her son Gary Schroeder; her grandson, Steven Schroeder; her sister Ione Jefson and three brothers-in-law. 

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at 11 a.m., at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Tom Schultz and Rev. Jon Wolff will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia, on Monday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The family would appreciate that memorials be given in lieu of flowers.

Leland Larson PDF Print
Leland Bernell Larson, age 85 of Austin, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.

He was born Dec. 27, 1924, to George and Betsy (Bakken) Larson in Northwood, Iowa where Lee grew up on a farm.  After graduation from high school, he moved to Vallejo, Calif. where he worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard.  He married Priscilla Jane “Sally” Louden on May 8, 1946 in Northwood, Iowa.  Lee served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in South Korea as an electrician. When he was honorably discharged from the military with the rank of Sergeant, he and Sally moved to Chicago, Ill.where Lee attended Coyne Electrical School. After he received his electrican’s degree, they moved to Albert Lea, Minn.  Lee was employed by Jewels Radio & Appliance.  In 1953, they took up residence in Austin where Lee gained employment with Geo. A. Hormel & Company.  He retired after more than 30 years of service. Lee operated “Lee’s Radio Repair” in the basement of their house for many years. He was president of the Citizen Band Radio Club of Austin where he had a bill passed in the Minnesota State Legislature for which CB radio users could have their CB Radio call letters on their license plates. Lee was an active member of the Sons of Norway, Holy Cross Lutheran Church and St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Sally died in 2006.  Lee was on the initial World War II Honor Flight from La Crosse, Wis. to Washington D.C. to see the World War II Monument.

Survivors include his four sons, Larry Larson, Los Angeles, Calif.; Keith (Sharon) Larson, Denver, Colo.; Paul (Andrea), St. George, Utah and James Larson, Caledonia; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Ray (Lois) Larson, Emmons and Roy (Margaret) Larson, Pine Island. 

He was preceded in death by his wife Priscilla “Sally” Larson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 20, 2010 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Kristi Koppel officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Worlein Funeral Home of Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service.  Interment is at Grandview Cemetery in Austin with military rites by American Legion Post 91.  Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.

There will also be a memorial service Thursday, Aug. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bread of Life Church, Caledonia.
 
Mary 'Marguerite' Beardmore PDF Print
margueritebeardmore.jpgMary “Marguerite” Beardmore, 86, or Caledonia, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2010 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.

She was born Dec. 23, 1923 in Caledonia to Peter and Josephine (Scanlan) Longueville. Marguerite married Melvin “Toby” Beardmore on Sept. 5, 1950 in Decorah, Iowa. She attended country school, Loretto High School, and Winona Business College in Winona, Minn. After schooling she went to Long Beach, Calif. and lived with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Colleran and family. She worked as a clerk at the draft board during WWII.

Marguerite returned to Caledonia and worked as a clerk at Simon Drug Store and the Ben Franklin Store. She was also bookkeeper for Hector Construction in Caledonia for 16 years.

She is survived by her husband Melvin “Toby” of Caledonia; a daughter, Sandra Goodhart, Warsaw, Nev.; two sons, Bill (Dianne) Beardmore, Boone, Iowa and Gary (Cathy) Beardmore, La Crescent, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Etta Longueville, Eagen, Minn. and Lol Longueville Cram, Austin.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale and Earl “Bud” Longueville; a sister, Alice Marie Meyer and a son-in-law, Ron Goodhart.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 20, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Frs. James McCauley and Gregory Leif will concelebrate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Holy Family Hall, next to the church, where a prayer service will be said at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Church or School.

Gladys A. Wiebke, 87, of Caledonia, Minn., died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, at Tweeten Lutheran Health Care Center in Spring Grove, Minn.

She was born Aug. 26, 1922, to Charles and Emma (Schroeder) Schartz. On April 21, 1942, she married Eugene O. Kohlmeyer.  This union was blessed with three children, Donna, LeRoy, and Linda. Eugene preceded Gladys in death on Dec. 26, 1969.  On March 18, 1972, she married Roger D. Wiebke and he preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1993.

Survivors include her three children, Donna (Steve) Nolte, Holmen, Wis.; LeRoy (Phyllis) Kohlmeyer, Caledonia, Minn.; and Linda (Mark) Modlinski, Savage, Minn.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her first and second husband, Gladys was preceded in death by two infant sisters.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Tom Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home,  Caledonia, on Monday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and also at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
 
Ryker Schroeder PDF Print
Ryker Lee Schroeder, infant son of Troy and Emily (Loger) Schroeder of Caledonia, was stillborn Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.

He was born at 5:31 p.m., weighed nine pounds, two ounces, and was 22 1/2 inches long. In addition to his parents, Ryker is survived by his big brother, Thomas; maternal grandparents Roger and Roxanne Loger of Cross Plains, Wis., and Kathy Loger of Caledonia, Minn.; paternal grandmother, Joyce Schroeder of Caledonia; maternal great-grandparents, Jack and Audrey Curtis of Black Earth, Wis.; as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Ryker was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Thomas Schroeder.

A private family service in remembrance of Ryker will be at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Tom Schultz will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Caledonia, is in charge of arrangements.
 
Odin Wermager PDF Print
odinwermagercrop.jpgOdin Kenneth Wermager, 93, of Caledonia, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010 at Golden Living Center, La Crescent, Minn.

He was born July 15, 1917, in Wilmington Township, Houston County, to Carl and Olena (Buxengard) Wermager. He was a WWII veteran and served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945. Odin married Rose Mary Sullivan on Oct. 25, 1947 in Caledonia. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2006. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Local Union 49 for many years. He was a member of Houston County VFW Post 3833 and  American Legion Post 191 in Caledonia.

He is survived by three daughters, Linda (Dean) Steinke, San Jose, Calif.; Mary Kay (John) Olinger,  Onalaska, Wis., and Donna Mae (James) Ross, Hokah, Minn.; a son, Anthony (Connie) Wermager, Hokah; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lillian (James) Ethridge, Wagner, Okla.

In addition to his wife Rose Mary, he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas, two sisters and a brother.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Steven Meyer will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia, and visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
