Alvin Philpot PDF Print
Alvin Philpot, 86, of Beavercreek, Ore., died April 15, 2008.

Alvin was born Sept. 12, 1921 in Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He worked at Marson Garage as parts manager for many years, and later drove a chip truck for Crown Zellerbach for 17 years, retiring in 1984.

In 1962 he married Ruby Hanke of Brownsville, Minn.

Survivors include his wife, sister Johnnie Laier and brothers Vance and Melvin.

The funeral service was held at Hillside Chapel in Oregon City, Ore. on April 18 at 11 a.m.

Remembrances are directed to the Lung Association.

austin.jpgMerlin W. Austin, 77, of Brownsville, Minn., died Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

He was born November 30, 1930 in Preston, Minn., to Alfred and Lilly (Redahlen) Austin. Merlin attended schools in Preston and graduated from Preston High School in 1948. On November 7, 1951 he married Ethel Bunke in Winona, Minn. Merlin was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Freeman Construction in Spring Valley, Minn., and Griffin Construction in Chatfield, Minn., retiring in 1993.  He was a member of the Local 49ers and a longtime member of the Brownsville Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel of Brownsville, Minn.; two daughters, Terri (Doug) LeJeune of Brownsville, Minn., and Deb (Pat) Cody of Caledonia, Minn.; six grandchildren, one sister, Alene (Donald) Ward of Onalaska, Wis.; one sister-in-law, Helen Austin of Mabel, Minn.; and one brother-in-law, Dell (Lil) Bunke of Winona, Minn.

Merlin was preceded in death by two brothers, Adrein and Kenneth (Joyce) Austin.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 2, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Church, Brownsville. Pastor Brian Cuda will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, is in charge of arrangements.

loken-72.jpgMadonna Catherine (McNaboe) Loken, 91, died Friday, April 25, 2008, at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston, Minn. 

Madonna was born Dec. 16, 1916, in Bridgewater, S.D. to Michael and Winnifred (Baldwin) McNaboe. She moved to Iroquois, Ind., in 1920 and attended high school there.  She moved to Houston, Minn. in 1934 and graduated from Caledonia High School in June 1934. She helped her parents on the farm until she married Oran E. Loken in May of 1937 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Houston. They were married for 62 years until Oran died in 1999.

Madonna worked at Houston High School cafeteria for 11 years and was a seamstress at home until she lost her sight at age 73. She and her husband were volunteers with Semcac for 30 years. They belonged to Harry J. Olson Senior Citizen Center in LaCrosse, Wis.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Houston Senior Citizens. Madonna and Oran lived in “Lokenville” until 1960 when they moved to Arkansas for a year. They lived in uptown Houston until their move to Heritage Court in 1997. She served as president of the Altar Society at one time.

Madonna was preceded in death by her husband Oran; grandson Brent; five brothers, Leo, Edward, Vernon, Harold and Clifford; and two sisters, Marcella and Margaret.

Madonna is survived by five children: Francis (Barb), Holmen, Wis.; Judy (Mike) Herman, Fifty Lakes, Minn.; Cathy (Milt) Willegalle, Rosemount, Minn.; Becky (RJ) Savey, Pine River, Minn.; and Vicki (Kevin) Flegal, Houston, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Houston with the Reverend Joseph Pete officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.  

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Tuesday where the Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m.
 
Myra Forseth PDF Print
Myra L. Forseth, 84, formerly of La Crosse, Wis. died Thursday, April 24, 2008 at Caledonia Care and Rehab, Caledonia, Minn.

She was born July 20, 1923 at St. Anne’s Hospital in La Crosse to Palmer and Inga (Selin) Peterson. In her early years, Myra worked as a caregiver in a local nursing home and she did some waitressing. On Aug. 30, 1965 she married Raymond Forseth in Caledonia and he preceded her in death on April 25, 2000. Myra lived in La Crosse until 2004 when she moved to Caledonia to live with her son.

Myra is survived by her son, Lanny (Christine) Powlek, Caledonia. She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond.

A time of gathering will be Monday, April 28, 2008 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, La Crosse. A brief graveside service will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse.
 
Elaine Heintz PDF Print

Elaine Hartman Heintz, 79, died Saturday, April 26 in Waterloo, Iowa.

Elaine was born to Almar and Allminia (St. Mary) Heintz.

She is survived by her husband Roy and two sons, Paul and Greg; and two sisters: Doris Giblin and Marian Whitewater, Caledonia.

Services will be held in Waterloo, Tuesday, April 29.

johnsonleonard_72.jpgLeonard F. Johnson, 89 of Houston, Minn. died on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.

Leonard was born on May 17, 1918, in LaPorte, Minn. to Gust and Emma (Knutson) Johnson. He moved with his family when he was a baby to Sheldon, Minn. Leonard lived and farmed all of his life in Sheldon. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Leonard was a member of the Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Houston where he also taught Sunday School. He was a member of the Houston American Legion, Sheldon Township Board, and the Sons of Norway.

He is survived by his daughter Melba (Mark) Staven, Caledonia, Minn., three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, one brother, Harold; one sister, Ruth; and three half brothers: Palmer, Clair and Paul.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the Bethany Evangelical Free Church with the Rev. T. Wayne Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Swede Bottom Cemetery in rural Houston with military honors by the Arnet – Sheldon American Legion Post of Houston. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Hoff Funeral Homes – Houston Chapel.

stenehjem.jpgA.D. “Don” Stenehjem, age 91, of Rochester, Minn. died Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Madonna Meadows, Rochester.

Alton Donald Stenehjem was born Feb. 18, 1917 in Arnegard, N.D. At an early age he and his family moved to Caledonia where he grew up and graduated from high school.  He graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in business and then worked for Proctor and Gamble.  He joined the U.S. Army, serving during WWII in North Africa, Germany and France.  After his discharge he worked with his father in Caledonia in the family grocery store.

Don married Lillian Viola Glasrud, Sept. 17, 1950 in Spring Grove, Minn. They moved to Rochester in 1958. Don became an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.  He retired in 1977. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, active in the church and served on various committees.  He was an Eagle Scout, a Charter Member of the Rochester ‘76 Lions Club, and a lifetime member of the Eastern Star.

He is survived by two daughters: Judy Lawver, Tacoma, Wash.; and Jane (Ron) Timmerman, St. Peter, Minn.; one son, Dean (Julie) Stenehjem, Rochester; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 22, 2008.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, April 26 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Rochester with the Reverend Steven Ronningen officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour at the church prior to the services on Saturday.

Memorials are suggested to the Minn. Lions Eye Bank; Seasons Hospice or his church.

Bonnie Burroughs PDF Print
bonnie-burroughs.jpgBonnie Lue Burroughs, 68, of Caledonia, died after a long battle with cancer on Sunday Apr. 6, 2008 at her home. 

She was born Sept. 15, 1939, in La Crosse to Fred  A. and Luella (Holte) Churchill. She graduated from Logan High School and married Don Burroughs, Sr. on June 18, 1960 at St. John’s Catholic Church in La Crosse.

Bonnie worked as an Assistant Head Cook at Caledonia High School for 33 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women.

She is survived by her husband Don of Caledonia; her sons: Don, Jr. (Sharon), Caledonia; Dave (Marcia), Prior Lake, Minn.; four grandchildren; her honorary daughters, Sharon Klinski and Tammy Kramer; two sisters: Doris VanThomme, Fairbault, Minn., and Janet Hendricks, Richland Center, Wis.; two brothers: Fred, Jr. Churchill, Summerville, S.C., and Richard Churchill, Rosemount, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a sister Beverly Butterfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Apr. 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia.  

Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Hall, behind St. Mary’s Church. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church Thursday.

McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia is assisting the family with arrangements.
