margaret-meyer_72.jpgMargaret M. Meyer, 85, of Waukon, Iowa, formerly of Dorchester, Iowa, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at her home in Waukon.

Margaret Minnie Meyer was born Aug. 19, 1923 in rural Dorchester, Iowa, the daughter of  Truman and Leona (Bulman) Wenig. She attended country school in the rural Dorchester area. Margaret was a housekeeper for Alvin Meyer and a caregiver to his children for several years. On Oct. 4, 1949 she married Alvin John Meyer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed together in Union City Township in rural Dorchester for many years. She and Alvin moved to Waukon in 1969. Margaret moved to Southridge Apartments in January of 2006. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ and its ladies aid. Margaret also served as historian for the Waukon Senior Citizen Club.

Survivors include her sons: Gordon (Cheryl) Meyer, North Little Rock, Ark.; and John (Kathleen) Meyer, Dorchester; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn (Milton) Staggemeyer of Eitzen, Minn.; and a son-in-law, Dennis (Jill) Lamport of Indianola, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her husband Alvin who died in 1990; a daughter, Janice Lamport; a granddaughter, Deanne Lamport and three sisters, Nadine Fritz, Lorna Meiners and Donna Lou Fruechte.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 7, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen, with Rev. Kent and Rev. Deb Meyer officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call one hour before services at the church on Sunday.

teresa_hegge_72.jpgTeresa Rose Francisco Hegge, 45, of Spring Grove, died Wednesday,  Aug. 27, 2008 after an eight year struggle with cancer.

Born on May 29, 1963, in Anaconda, Mont. to Jack and Kathleen Francisco, Teresa lived in the Anaconda area for her entire youth. While attending Montana State University she met Bruce Hegge, whom she later married.  Her education continued at Mankato State University,  where she received a Bachelor of Science degree and in 1991 a Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology.  Teresa’s career in medical speech pathology encompassed positions in Minneapolis, Minn., the Detroit, Mich. area, and facilities in southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. In 1995 she became the educational speech pathologist in the Spring Grove and Caledonia school systems.

Teresa is survived by her husband, Bruce Hegge of Spring Grove, where they have lived together since 1992, and her sons Hank and Lance; her mother, Kathleen Francisco, Anaconda, Mont.; siblings: Michele (Doug) Butori, Butte, Mont.; Kathy Francisco (John Brown), Bozeman, Mont.; and John Francisco, Butte, Mont.; aunt Terrel Francisco, Hamilton, Mont.; in-laws Janice and Owen Hegge, Spring Grove; Karin (Hiroshi) Tanaka, Memphis, Tenn.; and Sara (Darin) Bratland, Spring Grove.

Teresa was preceded in death by her father, Jack Francisco.

Teresa’s wish was “please do not send me flowers.  Instead, do something kind for yourself or a loved one.”

Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. The service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Lois E. Johnson, 80, of Caledonia, Minn., died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

She was born April 30, 1928, in Caledonia, Minn., to Albert and Benerva (Berquam) Myhre. Lois was a 1946 graduate of Caledonia High School. On Dec. 18, 1948, she married Ronald Johnson at Wilmington Lutheran Church and they would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this year.

Survivors include her husband, Ron; five children, Lynda (Leslie “Ed”) Stokke, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Rebecca (David) Sampsel, Prior Lake, Minn.; Patty (Richard) Groshong, Marion, Iowa; David Johnson, La Crosse; and Dawn Johnson, Rochester, Minn.; 9 grandchildren; four sisters: Sylvia Ward, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Bernice (Bill) Ostern, Spring Valley, Minn.; Franny (Terry) Link, Onalaska, Wis.; and Katie (Jerald) Holland, Austin, Minn.; one brother, Neil Morey, Caledonia; one sister-in-law, Lorraine Myhre, Caledonia; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Merle and Catherine Johnson and Imy and Bill Dorival, all of Caledonia, and Harold and Mary Johnson of Shakopee, Minn.

Lois was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas and Robert Johnson; one brother, Albert Myhre; one brother-in-law, Robert Ward; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Morey.

Funeral services will be Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia.  Rev. Steven E. Meyer will officiate.  Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and also on Sunday from 12 noon until the time of service. larson_harold_72.jpgHarold J. Larson, age 82, of Mabel, Minn. died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at his home.

Harold was born Aug.  13, 1926 in Newburg Township, Fillmore County, Minn. to George and Beulah (Soiney) Larson. He attended the Riceford and Mabel Schools. He farmed with his father in the Riceford area before serving in the United States Army.  He served in Germany during the Korean Conflict. After his service in the Army he resumed farming near Riceford.

On Sept. 24, 1960 he married Helen Johnson Opsahl in Harmony. He remained on the farm until recently when they moved into Mabel. 

He was a member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church and the American Legion. 

Harold is survived by his wife Helen of Mabel; a daughter Darlene Larson, Eitzen, Minn.; two step-children: Diane (John DeLong) Ferring, Lansing, Iowa and Dale (Dorene) Opsahl, Caledonia; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters: Bernice Garness, Mabel, Norma Spitzmiller and Helen (Jake) Beaman both of Rockford, Ill., and Marie Betsinger, Rockland, Wis; three brothers: Leland (Marcy), Green Valley, Ariz.; and Leslie (Carol) and Richard (Marcia) both of Mabel.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ronald Ferring.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25 at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel with Rev. Gail Klavetter officiating.  Burial will be in the Riceford Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.

Ella M. Gran, 98, of Caledonia, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

She was born April 13, 1910, in Jefferson Township, Houston County, Minn., to John and Minnie (Pohlman) Schuldt. Ella attended school in Houston County, District 78. On Oct. 7, 1935, she married Arthur Gran in New Albin, Iowa. Together they farmed in Jefferson Township until 1978 when they moved to Caledonia. On Jan. 7, 1979, Arthur preceded Ella in death.

Ella was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Caledonia where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years and served on various ladies groups. She was an active volunteer at the Caledonia Lutheran Home (Caledonia Care & Rehab) and spent time caring for others in their own homes.

Survivors include one daughter, Laurie (Robert) Baker of Indianapolis, Ind.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Ella was preceded in death by one sister, Frieda Krzebietke; and four brothers, Edwin, Erwin, William, and George Schuldt.

Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 18, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Steven E. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Sunday from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. and also on Monday from 12 noon until the time of service.

Jeffrey S. Wynn, 57, of Caledonia, Minn. and formerly of Victoria, Minn., died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at his home in Hokah, Minn.

He was born Aug. 22, 1950, in Carver County, Minn. to Laurel and Janice (Sennes) Wynn. Jeff graduated from Chaska High School in Chaska, Minn. in 1968.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served on the U.S.S. Kittyhawk for two tours during Vietnam from 1968 until 1972.  On June 8, 1974, Jeff married Pam Worman in Caledonia and they later divorced in 2003.  He was employed as an OTR truck driver for over 30 years until he was unable due to a disability. 

Survivors include two daughters, Jessica (Shane) Halverson, Caledonia, Minn.; and Jamie Wynn (Bobby Ball), La Crescent, Minn.; one son, Josh Wynn, Caledonia, Minn.; three grandchildren; and one sister, Linda Wynn, Victoria, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Tim and Brian Wynn.

Memorial services will be Thursday, Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia.  Rev. Elizabeth Stempinski will officiate.  Burial with military honors will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Sandy Kubitz, age 62, of New Albin, Iowa, died Sunday morning Aug. 10, 2008 at her home in New Albin.

Sandy was born in Ohio on Feb. 8, 1946 to Jack “Junior” Caldwell and Grace Margaret Carney. She married Lawrence “Joe” Kubitz on July 16, 1987 at Melbourne Fla.

Sandy is survived by her husband Joe of New Albin, eight children: Julie, Joey, Angie, Trina, Rosie, Frankie, Jenny and J.J.; 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two siblings.

Services will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, Aug. 13 at the New Albin Community Center where friends may call on from 4 p.m. until time of services.

The Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing is assisting the family.

dennis_todd_72.jpgDennis F. Todd, 56, of Houston died on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, in Brownsville, Minn.

Dennis was born on March 7, 1952, in La Crosse, Wis. to Robert and Louella (Schiebstad) Todd. He was raised in Houston and graduated from Houston High School in 1970. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. On June 16, 1973 Dennis married Karen Loken at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston. He worked for Midland Coop where he operated the gas station in Houston. Dennis also worked for Valley Ford in Houston as a mechanic, Dunn Blacktop in Winona, Minn., and for the last 19 years for Ace Communications in Houston as a cable splicer. He was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Houston Fire Department, and the Arnet-Sheldon American Legion Post 423 in Houston.

    Dennis is survived by his wife, Karen; mother, Louella Todd, Houston; two sons: David (Jody) Todd, Farmington, Minn.; and Dean (Andrea) Todd of Shakopee, Minn.; five grandchildren; special Goddaughter, Stacy (Richard) Botcher, Houston; four brothers: Jim Todd, Houston; Richard (Doris) Todd, Houston; Dan (Kathy) Todd, Houston; and Mike Todd, New Hampton, Iowa; four sisters: Janice (Dale) Nelson, Fredricksberg, Iowa; Pat Palmquist, Rochester, Minn.; Alta (Stan) Mueller, Chippewa Falls, Wis., and Linda Hansen, Waverly, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Todd, and his nephew Randy Todd.

There was a memorial service for Dennis at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church with the Revs. Lane Zaffke and Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial was in the Stone Church Cemetery. Friends called from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Hoff Funeral Homes – Houston Chapel.
