Julie A. Schulte, 50, of Dorchester, Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa.
Julie Ann Schulte was born on June 11, 1959 in Waukon, the daughter of
Vernis and Irene (Mangels) Engelhardt. She attended the Little Red
School House in the Forest Mills area, graduated from Waukon High
School in 1977 and attended NICC in Calmer, Iowa. On Sept. 8, 1990 she
married Dave Schulte at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon. They
farmed together in Waterloo Township in rural Dorchester where they
raised crops, hogs and beef cattle. Julie worked in the Allamakee
County Assessor’s Office from 1979 until 1995. She then started a
career working with persons with disabilities at TASC Inc. in Waukon
and she was currently working at ABLE in Caledonia, Minn. where she
served on several boards.
Julie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dorchester where
she was active in its ladies circles and was a CCD teacher.
Survivors include her husband, Dave Schulte of Dorchester; four
children: Benjamin, Nicole, Matthew and Michael, all at home; a
brother, Dean (Sue) Engelhardt, Fairfax Station, Va.; a special
aunt, Lolita Engelhardt, Postville, Iowa; her father-in-law and
mother-in-law, Lloyd and Ruth Ann Schulte, Waukon; brothers-in-law and
sisters-in-law, Rick Schulte, San Raman, Calif.; Randy (Julie) Schulte,
Brooklyn Park, Minn.; Craig (Amy) Schulte, Eagan, Minn. and Laurie
(Jeff) Carpenter, Appleton, Wis.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her mother-in-law, Shirley
Schulte; a grandmother, Paula Mangels and an uncle, Oran Engelhardt.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s
Dorchester Catholic Church in Dorchester, with Fr. Joseph Schneider
officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may
call from 3 - 7 p.m. Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where
there will be a 3 p.m. scripture service.

Aloysius Kunst

Aloysius (Al) Theodore Kunst, 90, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, January 24, 2010, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake, with his family at his side. He resided at the care center for two months after being diagnosed with multiple brain tumors.
Al was born in Caledonia, Minn., to Frank Kunst and Eva Hill, on March 8, 1919. On August 1, 1938 he married Augusta Onstad from Spring Grove, Minn., at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, in Caledonia.
Al served in the U.S. Army 1942-1944. His outfit was sent to the Philippines in preparation for deployment to Japan. After returning from the Army, he managed a few lumber yards for Hayes-Lucas and B.F. Nelson and later became a salesman for Certainteed Corporation. He and Augusta moved thirteen times and lived in eight different cities. In 1965 they made their home in Clear Lake, Iowa, where they eventually celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake, the Knights of Columbus, and the VFW.
He is survived by his two sons, David Kunst and his wife Jenni Samuel of Newport Beach, Calif., and Peter Kunst and his wife Nora Angel of Cottonwood, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Carlton Onstad and his wife Beulah of Spring Grove.
He was preceded in death by his wife Augusta; son John; three sisters; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law.
A mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 noon, Saturday Jan. 30, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Msgr. Donald P. Schmitz will officiate and burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Al Kunst.

June M. Hanke, 78, of Caledonia, died Sunday, January 24, 2010, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.
She was born June 9, 1931, in La Crosse, Wis., to Roy and Freda (Palmlund) Hanke. June was a 1949 graduate of Caledonia High School. She then attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. June was employed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for 38 years, retiring in 1993.
Survivors include one sister, Lois Goetzinger of Caledonia; one brother, Dale (Donna) Hanke of Mankato, Minn.; one nephew, Mark (Bonnie) Goetzinger of Caledonia; five nieces, Denice Goetzinger of Caledonia, Donnelle (Joe) Casler of Columbia, Mo., Deanne (Mark) Saari of Rush City, Minn.; Sandra Block of Minneapolis, Minn., and Lorilyn Dehning of Spring Grove, Minn.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
June was preceded in death by her twin sister at birth; one brother-in-law, Casey Goetzinger; and two nephews, Lee Hanke and Neil Goetzinger.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 28, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at Zion Evangelical Church, Brownsville. Pastor Brian Cuda will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Evangelical Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Hildor Edith Poppe, age 92, of Overland Park, Kan. died on Jan. 19, 2010 at Vintage Park at Stanley, Kan.
Hildor was born on March 16, 1917 in Caledonia, Minn. to Albert and
Freida Somermeyer. She was raised in Jefferson Township,
Caledonia. She was united in marriage to Harold Poppe on Feb. 1, 1947
and lived in Houston, Minn. She was a school teacher holding a masters
degree in history, teaching in elementary schools. She
participated in flower shows and garden clubs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Poppe in 2005. She is
survived by two daughters, Suzanne (Dale) Johnson, Ft. Collins, Colo.;
Barb (Bill) Lehmer, Olathe, Kan.; two sons, Doug (Zin) Naperville,
Ill.; and Craig (Kathy), Rochester, Minn.; thirteen grandchildren;
seventeen great-grandchildren, and one sister, Joyce Bolduan,
Caledonia.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 23, 2010 at
Countryside Church in Olathe, Ks. Inurnment will take place at
Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kan. at a later
date.

Robert I. Twite

Robert I. Twite died Tuesday Jan. 12, 2010 in Kirksville, Mo.
He was born in Caledonia to Oscar and Pernella Twite on March 29, 1949.
Robert was proceeded in death by his parents and brothers Odin and
Newman Twite of Caledonia and survived by his children, Eric Twite,
Rochester, Minn. and Ellie Twite, Byron, Minn.; one brother Oswald
Twite, Caledonia and three grandchildren.
His
body has been cremated and a spring burial will take place in
Caledonia. Condolences may be sent to Ellie Twite 121 8th St. NE;

William H. (Bill) Ideker

|
William H. (Bill) Ideker, died at his home in Dubois , Wyo.on Tuesday morning, Jan. 12, 2010, at the age of 75.
He was born in La Crosse, Wis., on April 4, 1934, the son of William C. Ideker and Pearl I. (Zimmerman) Ideker. He graduated from high school in Caledonia in 1952.
From 1952 to 1957 he worked for his uncle, Alvin Goetzinger in Brownsville, was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1957 and worked for Eversole Rogers dealership in La Crosse, Wis., from 1958 to 1963.
He married Jean Wuennecke on Nov. 5, 1960, in Brownsville. He moved to Dubois in 1963 and worked in the timber industry.
Bill was founder and owner of Bill’s Conoco in Dubois. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Knights Templar.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Ideker of Dubois; son, Jerry Ideker (Laurie) of Dubois, daughter Joy Coulston (Rodney) of Laramie, Wyo., two grandchildren, brothers Arnold Ideker (Letha) and Delmer Ideker (Dorothy) all of Brownsville; sisters Phyllis Buchner of La Crosse, Wis., Ruth Proksch (Bill), Arliss Seymour (Dave) and Kathy Fitzpatrick (Dave) all of Brownsville.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Headwaters Community Center in Dubois with Masonic rites and Knights Templar services. Errol Workman gave the eulogy. Interment followed at the Dubois Cemetery. Services were under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton.

William A. Flannery Jr.

William A. Flannery Jr., 70 of Hokah, Minn., passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 18, 2010 at home. He was born in La Crosse, Wis. on August 7, 1939 to William and Helen (Hammer) Flannery Sr. He married Marilyn Tschumper in St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Hokah, Minn. on September 3, 1960. Bill had farmed his entire life up on the ridge in between Brownsville and Hokah. He was a member of the Hokah Volunteer Fire Department for 41 years serving 23 of those years as their president. His dedication to service continued with 37 years on the Brownsville Town Board, 16 years with the Hokah Lions Club, and membership in the La Crescent Knights of Columbus.
In addition to his wife of 49 years, Marilyn of Hokah, he is survived by his children; Joseph (Laurie) Flannery of Hokah, Minn., Tari (Jeff) Lindow of Anchorage, Alaska, Roxanne (Terry) Von Arx of Holmen, Wis., Jean (John) Braund of Onalaska, Wis., Dean (Hope) Flannery of Hokah, Minn., nine grandchildren, two sisters; Marion Lynch of Houston, Minn. and Verna Mae (Tom) Randall of Genoa, Wis. He was preceded in death by one sister Helen “Mitzi” Rottman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Brownsville, Minn. Rev. Joseph Pete will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call on the family at the church Friday evening from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
