Donald C. Link, 84, of Caledonia, died peacefully, Friday, June 25, 2010 at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia.

Don was born March 5, 1926 in Crooked Creek Township, Houston County, to Gregor and Bertha (Theobald) Link. He served in the U.S. Army in the aftermath of WWII, being stationed in Japan for a time. Following his military service, he went into the road construction business with his two brothers, Cletus and Terry. After a short time he decided to enter into farming with his father. Farming turned out to be just the right occupation for him. While continuing to farm, he also began another full time job as a roofer for Ledegar Roofing in La Crosse, Wis. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia.

He is survived by two sons, Thomas Link, La Crosse, and Nicholas (Elaine) Link, Freeburg; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary (Francis) Bruening, Freeburg and a brother, Terry (Frances) Link. Onalaska.

He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel; two sisters, Lois and Barbara, a brother Cletus and an infant brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 29, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church,  Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial with military honors will be at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Freeburg, following the funeral lunch at St. Mary’s. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Holy Family Hall, next to St. Mary’s, where a prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning before the service at the church. The family requests monetary donations be given to La Crescent Animal Rescue in lieu of flowers.

annajohnsonpic.jpgAnna M. Johnson, 99, of La Crescent, Minn., died Friday, June 18, 2010 at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston, Minn. 

Anna was born on Aug. 9, 1910 in Red Lake County, Minn., to Thomas and Anna (Lundell) Johnson.  She attended country school in Lanesboro and Sheldon. She worked at the Rubber Mills in La Crosse, Wis. for 25 years. Throughout her life she was a member of Coon Valley Lutheran Church in Coon Valley, Wis., Prince of Peace Church in La Crescent and Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston.  She was very involved in various ladies’ church groups.  In 1929 Anna married Burdeen Jergenson; he passed away in 1964.  In 1965, she married Otis Johnson, he passed away in 1986.

Anna is survived by three step children, Frank (Shirley) Johnson,  Norwalk, Wis.; Wayne Johnson, Coon Valley, Wis.,  and Alice Johnson, Coon Valley; daughter-in-law Winnie Jergenson, La Crosse, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren, and brother Thomas (Evelyn) Johnson, Onalaska, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands; two sons, Milton and Roger Jergenson; eight brothers, Hjalmer, Gilbert, Leonard, Arden, Norris, Carrol, Joseph, and Tommy Johnson; three sisters, Betsy Johnson, Mabel Faas, and Josephine Fancher; and daughter-in-law Nancy Jergenson.

The funeral service for Anna will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Reverend Lane Zaffke officiating.  Burial will be at Stone Church Cemetery in Houston.  Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.

lorimeisch.jpgLora (Lori)Ann Meisch of Caledonia died unexpectedly at home of a heart attack, Thursday June 17, 2010.

She was born to Robert and Leona (Lamey) Meisch on Sept. 20, 1952 in Plainview, Minn. She was a lifelong resident of Caledonia. She worked as a secretary for Farmers Insurance, was currently employed by the City of Spring Grove, and volunteered her time to the Houston County Ag Society where she held the position of Secretary for the last several years.

She is survived by her parents, her four siblings: Arnold (Janene) Meisch, Prior Lake, Minn.; Linda (Tom) Dadko, Mt. Prospect, Ill.; Kenneth (Jane) Meisch and Holly (Earl) Klankowski both of Caledonia; nine nieces and nephews and eight great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Monday June 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia with burial to follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday,June 20 at Holy Family Hall at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. They may also call from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday.

In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be given to the Houston County Ag Society (Fair Board).

Jim E. “Grandaddy” Richards, Sr., 79, of Caledonia, Minn., died Saturday, June 5, 2010, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.

He was born Aug. 3, 1930, in St. Louis, Mo., to James and Jeanetta (Huddleston) Richards. Jim graduated from high school in St. Louis. He then served in the United States Air Force from 1951 until 1955. On Dec. 7, 1955, Jim married Mary Beth Simmons and she preceded him in death in 1995. Jim was employed with General Dynamics in San Diego, Calif., for 35 years, retiring in 1995.

Survivors include four children, Mary Anne Cole (Stan Landis), Vernon, Texas; Kathlyn Richards (Ron Stinson), Caledonia, Minn.; John Richards, Caledonia, and Samantha Richards, Vernon, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Linda Anderson and Brenda Hagen, both of St. Charles, Mo.

In addition to his wife, Jim was preceded in death by two sons, Richard McIntosh and James E. Richards, Jr.; and a daughter-in-law, Linda Richards.

A brief commital service followed by military honors will be Friday, June 18 at 5 p.m. at the North Park, corner of Kingston St. and Hwy. 44, Caledonia. Military honors will be provided by the Loveless-Eikens American Legion Post 191 of  Caledonia, and the United States Air Force Funeral Honor Guard. A Celebration of Jim’s life will follow at Elsie’s Restaurant and Bar, Caledonia. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Caledonia, is in charge of arrangements.

Richard N. “Dick” Penrose, 71, of La Crescent, Minn., died Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis., after a long illness.

He was born Sept. 18, 1938, in Newark, Ohio, to Frank and Alma (Brown) Penrose. Richard received a football scholarship to Otterbein College in Ohio, which he declined and instead pursued a career in the U. S. Army. He retired on Oct. 31, 1978, as a Chief Warrant Officer.

He is survived by his wife, Gerry Penrose of La Crescent; two sons; one daughter; two step-daughters; two sons-in-law; 10 grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters.

Dick was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Memorial services will be Friday, June 11, at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia, Minn. Rev. Steven E. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in Prince Of Peace Cemetery, La Crescent with military honors by the Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595 of La Crescent and the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Houston County Veterans Services for the benefit of area veterans.

claytonhosch.jpgClayton J. Hosch, 80, of Caledonia, died Saturday, June 05, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on March 5, 1930, in his home on West Ave. in La Crosse, Wis. to Bernice (Peter) and Anthony Hosch. They moved to Caledonia in 1940 where his parents owned and operated The Hosch Tavern. He attended St. Peters Catholic Central Grade School and Loretta High School, graduating in 1948. He was in business with his parents until he entered the Air Force in 1951, where he was trained as an Air Policeman. He was stationed at the Pentagon with top secret clearance until 1955 when he returned to Caledonia and worked at St. Mary’s Body Shop. He married Janene Lee on May 4, 1957, at St. Peters Catholic Church in Caledonia. Clayton and his wife owned and operated the Standard Oil Station, Caledonia Sanitary Service, and the Caledonia Hotel and Café. During that time, Clayton served as a PT City of Caledonia Police Officer, drove school bus for Karrel’s Bus Service, and worked as a bookkeeper at Weichert Motors.

He worked at Erickson Bakery in La Crosse where he drove semi and served as the bakery’s ‘Jack of All Trades.’ At the age of 53, he attended WWTC and graduated with honors with an Associate Degree in accounting. He sold insurance with Quality Insurance and Farm Bureau and then took an accounting position with Farm Power and Equipment/Caledonia Chrysler of Caledonia from where he retired in 1992.

For 20 years he served as a volunteer firefighter for the Caledonia Fire Dept. He believed strongly in firearm safety and volunteered for 17 years as a MN State firearms safety instructor for the youth of the Caledonia area.

He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia, where he volunteered his many talents; he was a member of the American Legion Eikens Post 191 for over 50 years; life member of the NRA; a volunteer with Veteran’s services and active with many community organizations and committees.

Clayton is survived by his wife of 53 years; five children, Mark, Caledonia; Steven (Victoria), St. Michael, Minn.; Mary (Mark) Betz, Caledonia; James (Shelly), New Albin, Iowa and Kathleen (Ron) Lund, Caledonia; eight grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two brothers, Darrel (Carol) Hosch, La Crescent and Robert (Irene) Hosch, Caledonia; and mother-in-law Mildred Lee, Caledonia.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Delores Burmaster and infant grandson Peter Hosch.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia, with burial with military honors to follow in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 11 at Holy Family Hall at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. They may also call from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family asks that you bring your favorite memory of Clayton so we may add it to our memory journal or make a memorial to the Landscaping fund at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Ronald E. “Ron” Grenier, Sr. PDF Print
obit_grenier.jpgRonald E. “Ron” Grenier, Sr., 70, of Westby, Wis., and formerly of Caledonia, Minn., died Thursday, May 27, 2010, at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wis.

He was born December 4, 1939, in Caledonia to Earl and Verna (Walters) Grenier. Ron was a 1957 graduate of Caledonia High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving two tours from 1957 to 1965 as a First Class Telecomunication Technician. His service with the Navy took him all around the world. On February 19, 1960, Ron married Dorothy “Dottie” Lawson and they later divorced. He then married Mary (Soper) Seitz on May 15, 2002, on the island of Kawaii in Hawaii. In his later years, he owned and operated Grenier Consulting Service in La Crosse. He and Mary were members of the Happy Twirlers of La Crosse. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and he was also a member of the Struck-Klandrud American Legion Post 336 of Onalaska, Wis.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Westby, Wis.; four sons, Earl (Terry) Grenier, Sr., of Sheldon Township, Minn., and Kenneth (Melinda) Grenier, Michael (Julie) Grenier, and Ronald (Tracey) Grenier, Jr., all of New Market, Md.; two step-children, Angela (Ben) Horstman of Bangor, Wis. and Danyel Allen of La Crosse, Wis.; 13 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Brevig.

He was preceded in death by one brother, and one sister.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia, Minn. Rev. Steven E. Meyer will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Money Creek Cemetery, Money Creek Township, with military honors by the Onalaska American Legion Post 336.  An additional memorial graveside service will be held on June 14, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in Money Creek Cemetery.  Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Caledonia, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.

obit_dewitt.jpgShane DeWitt, 15, of Caledonia, Minn., died Friday, May 28, 2010. He was born March 20, 1995, in La Crosse to Scott and Deanna (Zibrowski) DeWitt. Shane was completing his freshman year at Caledonia High School where he was involved with basketball and track. He loved helping out on the family farm and milking cows on the Schieber farm.

Survivors include his parents, Scott and Deanna of Caledonia; 3 sisters, Nicole of La Crescent, Minn., and Angela and Jennifer, both of Caledonia; 1 brother, Bryan of Caledonia; his maternal grandparents, Richard and Maureen Zibrowski and his paternal grandmother, Marilyn DeWitt, all of Caledonia; and aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Shane was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Roger DeWitt; and his maternal and paternal great-grandparents.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 3, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Tom Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia, on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
