Anna Mae Waters

Anna Mae Waters, 83, of Caledonia, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008 at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia.
She was born Oct. 30, 1924 in Hanover Township, Allamakee County, Iowa
to David and Mary (Moller) Burroughs. She attended grade school in
Dorchester, Iowa and graduated from high school in Waukon, Iowa. Anna
Mae got her teaching certificate in Dubuque, Iowa and she taught
for seven years in various country schools in Allamakee County.
On Nov. 8, 1948 she married James Waters in Hanover. He preceded her in
death on Sept. 30, 1998.
Anna Mae and Jim farmed until 1968 and then they moved to Caledonia and
purchased Jim’s Bar and operated it for 3 years. They purchased Water’s
Restaurant, Hotel, Bar and Bowling Alley in 1971 and operated the
business until their retirement in 1986. They moved to Houston, Minn.
and Anna Mae worked at the Village Inn there. She returned to Caledonia
after Jim’s death. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the
Americas.
She is survived by her five children, John (Shelby) Waters, Viroqua,
Wis.; Marilyn (Darrell) Rose; and Lorna (Paul) Augedahl, both of
Caledonia; Mary (Tim) Serres, Brownsville; and Barb (Collin) Johnson,
St. Charles, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a
sister, Della (Jerry) Just, Clarksfield, Minn.; a brother, Roland
(Vera) Burroughs, Waukon, and a sister in law, Alice Burroughs,
Champagne, Ill.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers,
Richard, Jerome, Alfred, Garland, and Delbert Burroughs, and two
sisters, Mary Helgeson and Florence Radloff.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug.
12, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will
officiate and burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Houston. Friends
may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at St. Mary’s School Auditorium,
Caledonia, where a Catholic Daughter rosary will be said at 4 p.m. and
a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the
service at the church on Tuesday.

Darryl Graf

Darryl C. Graf, 52, of Hokah, Minn. died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at his home in a tragic farm accident.
He was born May 8, 1956 in La Crosse, Wis. to Charles and Kathleen
(Semke) Graf. He married MaryLou Baumgartner May 31, 1986 at St.
Peter’s Catholic Church.
Darryl was a farmer and was involved in many community groups. He
was previously employed at River Steel and was a past member of the
American Dairy Assoc., D.H.I.A., Brownsville Fire Dept., and he
currently served as treasurer of Brownsville Township and was active on
the Hokah Co-op board. Darryl was also an active member of St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brownsville.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, MaryLou, and their three
children: Michael 19; Laura 17; and Andy 15 all at home; his mother,
Kathleen (Robert) Ideker, Hokah; and his sister Karen (Tom) Claridge of
Redwing, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles in 1988.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 30 at St.
Peter’s Catholic Church, Hokah. Father Joseph Pete will officiate
and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hokah. Friends may call
from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church where a prayer service will
be held at 8 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the
service at the church Wednesday. Memorials are preferred to St. Peter’s
Church Renovation or St. Peter’s School.

Vernon Lewis

Vernon Eldon Lewis, age 89 of Mabel and formerly of Spring Grove, died Monday July 21, 2008 at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn.
He was born April 6, 1919 in Valley Springs, S.D. to Richard C. and Mabel (Watkins) Lewis.
Vernon graduated from Valley Springs High School. he received his
degree in political science and economics at South Dakota State
University in Brookings, S.D.. He taught at White, S.D., and Madison
S.D. before returning to school for certification as a
superintendent from the State College of Education in Greeley, Colo.
Vernon served in the United States Airforce during WWII. He was
stationed in Egypt, Lybia, Tunisia, and Italy. He served as a crew
chief on B-24 bombers with his unit the “Illustrous Librandos”, which
later became the 6th Airforce Division.
Vernon was discharged with honors in 1945, he went home and married his
childhood friend Julia Wiese on April 21, 1945 in Brandon, SD.
Vernon was asuperintendent of schools for 30 years, serving in Baltic,
S.D., and Comfrey, Minn., and for 17 years in Spring Grove. Vernon
retired in 1983.
He served on the Tweeten Lutheran Hospital Board, American Legion Post
249, Sons of Norway all in Spring Grove, and the Mabel V.F.W. of
Mabel, along with numerous other organizations.
He is survived by his sister Ruth of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his son-in-law
Richard C. Carlson, Mankato, his daughter-in-law Joan Lewis, Spring
Grove; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his special
friend Lois Johnson of Mabel.
He was preceeded in death by his wife Julia; his son Richard; his
daughter Katherine Carlson; his brother Harold; and his sister Gladys.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at 1 p.m. at
First Lutheran Church in Mabel.Pastor Curtis Fox will officiate.

Edward "Mouse" Kletzke

Edward “Mouse” R. Kletzke, 77 of Brownsville died Monday, July 21, 2008 at his home.
He was born April 14, 1931 in La Crosse, Wis. to Edward C. and Anna
(Harder) Kletzke. He married Betty Reinhart June 23, 1953 at St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brownsville.
Mouse worked for La Crosse Cooler Co., Allis Chalmers, and La Crosse
Plumbing. He was also self-employed as an over the road truck driver.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, La Crosse Eagles, and the La
Crescent American Legion.
He is survived by his wife Betty of Brownsville, a sister,
Priscilla (Dale) Reinhart, La Crosse; a brother Gail (Joanne) Kletzke,
Brownsville; a brother-in-law, Vernon Fitzpatrick, Caledonia; and a
sister-in-law, Betty Kletzke, Viola, Wis.
He was preceded in death by a brother Bob and three sisters, Vivian, Mildred and Karine.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brownsville. Father Gregory Leif will
officiate and burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Friends
may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Breza Hall, next to St.
Patrick’s Church where a prayer service will be at 6:15 pm.
Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the hall on
Thursday.

Helma Knutson

Helma Gedella Knutson, 100, of Sheldon, Minn., died Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston, Minn.
She was born Sept. 15, 1907 on the family farm at Esmond, N.D. to Knute
and Clara (Askim) Veum. The family later moved to Riceford, Minn. and
she attended high school in Mabel. After graduation, Helma attended
Normal Training in Spring Grove to become a teacher. She taught in
rural schools in Houston County for 8 years. On June 10, 1933, she
married Anton Knutson. They were married for 65 years before he
died on March 31, 1999.
Survivors include three sons: Lawrence (Loretta); Stanley (Ruth), both
of Caledonia; and Trygve (Janet), Houston; nine grandchildren; 21
great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law
Orvel Treangen, Spring Grove.
She was preceded in death by her husband Anton; two brothers Lennie and
Lester; sister Valborg Treangen; and two granddaughters-in-law, Teresa
Knutson and Molly Knutson.
The funeral service for Helma will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26,
2008 at Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Houston with the Rev. Steven
Meyer officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in
Caledonia at 2 p.m. Saturday. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Friday,
July 25 at Hoff Funeral Home – Houston Chapel and also one hour prior
to the service at the church.

William Albert

William “Bill” H. Albert, 83 of Caledonia died Sunday, July 20, 2008 at Caledonia Care and Rehab.
He was born Feb. 7, 1925 in Forest Lake, Minn. to Henry W. and Ellen
(Graf) Albert. He graduated from Loretto High School, Caledonia and
attended the University of Minnesota. He served his country in the U.S.
Navy as a pilot during WWII. He married Marvel Ratonde Sept. 15, 1947
at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Caledonia.
He and his brother George owned Albert’s Grocery Store in Caledonia and
Bill worked there from 1949 until his retirement in 1984.
He was a life long member of the Knights of Columbus, Loveless
Eikens American Legion Post 191, VFW Post 3188 and St. Mary’s Church.
Bill is survived by his wife Marvel of Caledonia; five children: Jane
(Bill) Skowronski, Napa, Calif.; William S. (Judy) Albert, Caledonia;
Sharon (Malcolm) High, Santa Clara, Calif.; Julie (Mike) Gerardy,
Caledonia; and Amy (Jay) Kamin, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 13 grandchildren;
and a brother, George (Virginia) Albert, Caledonia.
He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen, and three sisters: Doris Joyce, Alice Jackson, and Mary Ellen Marnach.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 24 at
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will
officiate and burial with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery,
Caledonia. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s
School Auditorium, where a rosary will be said at 4 p.m. and a prayer
service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the
service at the church Thursday. Memorials are preferred to Holy Family
Hall Kitchen or donor’s choice.

Craig Becker

Craig T. Becker died of natural causes in his sleep July 18, 2008.
He was born on Oct. 28 1965. He enjoyed his family friends, sports and his dogs.
Craig is survived by seven siblings Debbie Becker, Gary Becker, Mark
Becker, Shirley (Pat) Early, Scott (Angela) Becker, Tony Becker and Ann
(Chris) Yule, many nieces and nephews and a great niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents Cyril and Matilda Becker.
Visitation will be one hour prior to a Mass of Christian burial
Wednesday, July 23 at 11 a.m. at St Mary’s Church in Caledonia.

Donald Walcker

|
Donald D. Walcker 75, of Hokah, Minn., died Saturday, July 19 at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center in La Crosse.
He was born in Wessington Springs, S.D. on March 18, 1933 to Rudolph and Magdalena (Reinhart) Walcker.
On
April 2, 1956 he married Carol Tiber in St. James Catholic Church at
Camp Douglas, Wis. Don was a Korean War Navy veteran having served
aboard the USS Randolph Aircraft carrier as an electrician from 1952
until 1954. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Don worked as an
electrician for the Trane Company in La Crosse for a brief time before
starting his own electrical contracting business, Walcker Electric
Service. For 30 years he owned and operated the business until
his retirement in 1995.
He was an active member of the Hokah Commercial Club and was very
instrumental in the establishing of the Hokah pool. Don was a
member of the Knights of Columbus and the Hokah American Legion Post
498. In the winter, Don and Carol resided in Mission, Texas.
In
addition to his wife Carol of Hokah, he is survived by his children:
Terri (Tom) Urbanek, Stoddard, Wis.; Tom Walcker, Hokah; Dan (Tammy)
Walcker, Caledonia; Joe Walcker, Hokah; Kris (Skip) Jergenson, Houston;
12 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sister LaVonne Kearns, La
Crescent; brother Jerry (Phyllis) Walcker, Onalaska; and special cousin
Ken Smith, Rockland, Wis.
He was preceded in death by one brother Bob and two sisters Shirley and Susan.
A
Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 25 at
St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Hokah. Rev. Joseph Pete will
officiate. Burial with military honors by Hokah American Legion Post
498 will follow in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Hokah. Friends may
call at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of
services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the
Hokah First Responders or the St. Peter’s Restoration Fund. The
Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent is assisting the family.
