James Thomas Teff, age 67,  died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009 in Rochester, Minn.

James was born May 2, 1942 in Spring  Grove, Minn. 

He is survived by his wife Barbara and son Mike; his mother, Bernadette; sisters Elisabeth Nutter, Joan Berg, Angie (Mike) Vondrashek, Carol (Doug) Bakkum, and Debra (Dale) Herrmann; and brothers  Joe, Leo (Donna), Kenneth (Dana), Tom (Peggy), Greg, and George (Gail).

He was preceded in death by his father Carlton and brother Butch.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Risen Savior Catholic Church in Burnsville, Minn. Father Timothy Wozniak officiated. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Princeton Minn.

almasolberg.jpgAlma Helen (Nelson) Solberg, age 91 of Spring Grove, died on Sat. Nov. 28, 2009, at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn.

Alma was born on Oct. 11, 1918 to Nikolai and Christina (Larson) Nelson.

She attended country school in rural Caledonia. At age 18 she married Nis Bubbers; they were married seven weeks before he was injured in a logging accident and died. She married Lyle Cameron Solberg when she was 21. They were married for 56 years and lived on a farm near Black Hammer. They had also lived in Caledonia for thirty years, and had been members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Caledonia and Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove.

Alma received special recognition by former Vice-President Hubert Humphrey for her work with A.R.C. She and sister Clara Wolstad received recognition for the most new members joining A.R.C. She was a member of the original board that started Camp Winnebago near Caledonia, and she lovingly took care of her daughter Karen, who has Downs Syndrome, for forty years. Alma also worked at Caledonia Health Care Center in Caledonia. Alma moved to Green Lea Manor in 2006.

Alma is survived by six children: Lois Steele, Mabel; Nina (Rod) Lee,  Rochester; Audrey (Roger) Skauge;  Dianne (Dennis) Vesterse; and Tom Solberg all of Spring Grove; and Karen Renee, Mabel; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

In addition to her first husband Nis, she was preceded in death by her husband Lyle, her brother Norman, sisters Clara, and Blanche, and her granddaughter Kelly (Tom) Swee.

Funeral services will be held Tues. Dec. 1 at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Pastor Zane Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Trinity church cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. until time of services at the church.

cynthiadybing.jpgCynthia M. Dybing, 72, of Houston, Minn., died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis.

Cynthia  was born on June 26, 1937 to Melford and Cherrie (Bremmer) Eide in La Crosse. She grew up in Rushford and graduated from Rushford High School. On July 3, 1958 she married Ronald Dybing in Canton. Cynthia worked at various places throughout her life, a rootbeer stand in Rushford, the Kahler Hotel in Rochester, Niggle’s Café in Rushford, was a homemaker for many years, a waitress at Valley High Golf Course and at Aunt May’s Kitchen in Houston and was a bartender at the Legion until her retirement.

Cynthia is survived by her mother, Cherrie Eide, Rushford; husband of 51 years, Ronald, Houston; three daughters: Maxine Dybing, La Crosse; Debra (Larry) Gaustad,  Houston; and Lisa (Cecil) Graf, Hokah; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister Donna (Junior) Van Gundy, Houston; and two brothers, Stanley (Kathy) Eide,  Harmony, and Darrell Eide, Rushford.

The funeral service for Cynthia will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Reverend Mark Neithammer officiating. Burial will be at Silver Creek Cemetery in rural Houston. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009 at Hoff Funeral Home, Houston Chapel and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

dennisvangundy.jpgDennis H. “Gunner” Van Gundy, 58, of Houston, died on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at Gundersen - Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis.

Gunner was born on March 11, 1951, in La Crosse, Wis. to Harold and Dolores (Peterson) VanGundy. He graduated from Houston High School in 1969. While in high school Gunner excelled in wrestling, football, and baseball. He was named the Houston High School Athlete of the Year in his senior year. Gunner attended Winona State University for one year. He married Janet Moberly. Janet died in 1984. On Feb. 4 of this year Gunner married his long-time companion, Cindy Tower. Gunner worked at John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa for 17 years. He worked for Chart Industries in La Crosse for the past twenty years where he worked as a Senior Supervisor. Gunner was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston.

Gunner is survived by his wife, Cindy; parents Harold and Dolores Van Gundy, Houston; a step-son, Clay Brown, Caledonia, Minn.; one grandson; one brother Steve (Kendra) Van Gundy, Houston; three sisters: Dianne (Tim) Orr, Houston; Cheryl (Hoyt) Zenke, Caledonia; and Shelly (Dwayne) Johnson, La Crescent.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet; daughter, Sara; and brother, Gary.

The funeral service was at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial was in the Stone Church Cemetery in Houston. Friends called from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel, and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.

alvinjacobson.jpgServices for Alvin Lavern Jacobson, age 52, of McGregor, Iowa were held Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

After a memorial service at the Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, Military Honors were administered by the American Legion - Am Vets - VFW of Marquette and McGregor, Iowa at the city park by the Mississippi River. The procession was led by the McGregor Firefighters of Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1, of which “Al” served for 15 years. He also served the community for 10 years as a member of the McGregor Ambulance EMT. The service concluded with the placing of a wreath on the river.

Alvin is survived by his wife Joan, son Brandon, one grandchild, and daugher Jessica, all of McGregor; his mother Arlene Jacobson, New Albin, Iowa; three sisters: Nancy Featherston, Prairie du Chien, Wis.; Vicki Baures, Lansing, Iowa, and Patty Miller, Caledonia, Minn. He was preceded in death by his father Victor Jacobson.

malitadiersen.jpgMalita Amanda  Diersen, 87, of Caledonia, Minn., died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, following a stroke.

Malita was born Nov. 28, 1921, at home in Winnebago Township, Houston County, Minn.,  to Werner and Dorothea (Meyer) Schroeder. On Dec. 27, 1941, she married Julius E. Diersen and he preceded her in death on Oct. 20, 2000, after 59 years of marriage. She farmed with her husband on Jefferson Ridge for 47 years. Malita was a member of Zion Ev. Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid group in Eitzen Minn., and was a lifelong member of the Sunshine Homemakers.

Survivors include her five children, Belva (Francis) Gallagher, Caledonia; Rena (Glenn) Kruse, Eitzen; Nola (Gary) Skappel, Winona; and Gale (Tammy) Diersen and Pamela (Jim) Snodgrass, both of Caledonia; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Hildie Diersen, Neenah, Wis., and Laurine Schroeder and Ruth Diersen, both of Spring Grove.

In addition to her husband, Malita was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Carol Diersen; and nine siblings, Art Schroeder, Elsie Meyer, Martha Esch, Hulda Oitzman, George Schroeder, Bert Schroeder, Ruth Hahn, Victor Schroeder, and Esther Schulze.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Eitzen. Rev. Todd M. Krueger will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Caledonia, on Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Cheryl Lee Solum, age 60 of Spring Grove, died at her home on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009. She was a lifelong area resident.

She was born Nov. 30, 1948 in Winona, Minn. to Raymond and Lavonne “Vonnie” (Aupperle) Kronebusch. She was an Altura High School graduate, and a graduate of Winona Technical College for Cosmetology.

On July 21, 1973 she married James Solum at Jehovah Lutheran Church in Altura. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Black Hammer, and its women’s groups.

Survivors include her husband Jim of Spring Grove; three sons: Brent, Jaymie and Ryan, all of Spring Grove; her mother, Vonnie, Altura; a brother Larry (Janet) Kronebusch, Winona; a sister Bobbi (Mark) Gengler, Prior Lake, Minn.;  her mother-in-law Lorraine Solum, Spring Grove; a sister-in-law Kathy (David) Overland, Waseca, Minn.; and a brother-in-law Edward Solum, Spring Grove.

She was preceded in death by her father Raymond Kronebusch, and her father-in-law Alden Solum.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Black Hammer. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.

alicemaeleif.jpgAlice Mae (Ankeny) Leif, age 87, of Austin, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 at the Austin Medical Center.

Alice Mae was born July 31, 1922 in Winnebago, Minn. to LeRoy and Effie (DuBois) Ankeny.  On Oct. 9, 1943 she was united in marriage to Claude P. “Bud” Leif at the Fort Snelling Chapel. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1987.

Alice Mae worked with her husband and son as secretary of Leif Real Estate and Leif Tax Service.

Survivors include her 11 children: Jerome (Betty) Leif, Hartland, Wis.; Georgia (Gene) LaVallie, Eagan; Paul (Deb) Leif, Austin; Keith (Christine) Leif, Austin; Fr. Gregory Leif, Caledonia; Lawrence Leif, Bloomington; Joseph (Christal) Leif, White Bear Lake; Donald (Kelly) Leif, Sacramento, Calif.; Daniel (Roxane) Leif, Superior, Wis.; Mary (Edward) Huber, Bloomington; Steven (Marnie) Leif, Austin; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Marion Mentz, Austin; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Frances Cummings, Austin; Gene (Elaine) Leif, Austin; Alice (Klimek) Leif, Rochester; Mimi Ankeny, Austin; Beulah Ankeny, Stewartville.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by a sister, Ethel; brothers, Elwin “Bud”, Fenton, and Stan.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Austin with Father Gregory Leif and Father Joe Fogal officiating.  There will be a 7:30 p.m. wake service on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4-8 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Austin.
