Selma Esther Varnum, 83, of Caledonia, Minn., died Friday, June 13, 2008, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.
She was born Dec. 25, 1924, on the home farm in Brewster, Minn.,
to Robert and Mary (Messick) Blair. On Sept. 5, 1943, she married
Rex A. Varnum in Morris, Minn.
Survivors include her husband of over 64 years, Rex of Caledonia; three
daughters: Lyn (Lavaine) Diersen, Caledonia; Kay (Jerry) Moser, Wheat
Ridge, Colo., and Jean (Rolf) Schroeder, Rochester, Minn.; nine
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, James E. Blair,
Sanfford, Ariz.; and one sister-in-law, Marie Austin, Hancock,
Minn.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, and four brothers.
Funeral services will be Monday, June 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St.
John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Jon Wolff will officiate.
Burial will be at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia.
Friends may call at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church on Sunday from 4
p.m. until 7 p.m. and also on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of
service.

Clem Kosse

Clem
S. Kosse, age 97, of Luverne, Minn., formerly of Caledonia, Minn., died
Friday, June 13, 2008 at Sanford Luverne Hospital in Luverne.
He was born Dec. 18, 1910 in Marshall, Minn. to August and Bernadine
(Schroeder) Kosse. He moved with his family in 1916 to rural Dickey,
N.D. and received his education at a rural school near Dickey. After
his schooling he farmed with his family. In 1936, he moved to Caledonia
and was engaged in farming.
Clem was united in marriage to Mary Wilkes on June 2, 1937 in Dickey,
N.D. They made their home near Caledonia and were engaged in farming
until 1967, when they moved into Caledonia. He then was a mechanic at
Caledonia Implement. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in
Caledonia. Clem moved to Luverne in 2005 and resided at the Oaks
Independent Living until his death.
Clem is survived by his children: Joanne (John) Postlewait, Merriam,
Kan.; Theresa Beckman, Inwood, Iowa; and Father Gerald Kosse, Adrian,
Minn.; son-in-law, Dr. Robert Frisch, Mosinee, Wis.; 10 grandchildren
and 5 great-grandchildren; brother, Elmer (Gloria) Kosse, Carrington,
N.D.; sisters, Mary Shanline, Pratt, Kan. and Gladys Koke, Santa Clara,
Calif.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary in 1998, daughter Rita Frisch
in 2001, one great-grandchild, four brothers, and one sister.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the McCormick
Funeral Home in Caledonia, with a rosary at 5:30 and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and one
hour prior to the service at the church Thursday. Mass of
Christian Burial will be Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 11 a.m. at St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia, officiated by Father Gerald Kosse
and Father Tom Jennings. Burial will be at the Calvary Catholic
Cemetery in Caledonia.

Gay L. Koch

Gay L. Koch, 57, of Caledonia, died at her home on Sunday, June 8, 2008, after a year long battle with cancer.
She
was born December 6, 1950 in San Antonio, Texas to Robert and Orpha
(Myhre) Anderson. Gay and her family moved to Rochester, Minn. in 1963
and then they moved to Burnsville, Minn. where she graduated from
Burnsville High School. She married Bob Koch February 22, 1969 at St.
John the Baptist Catholic Church, Caledonia. They moved to their farm
south of Caledonia in 1974 and Gay was very involved as a business
partner in the operation on the farm.
Gay is survived by
her husband, Bob; a daughter, Chris (Brad); a son, Tony; three
grandchildren, a sister, Faye Shallbetter of Cape Coral, Fla, and a
brother, Jim Anderson of Austin, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 .am., Friday, June 13, at St.
Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Msgr. Donald Schmitz will
officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia.
Friends and family may call one hour prior to the service at the church
Friday. Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic School or
the American Cancer Society.

Dorothe E. Sanders

Dorothe E. Sanders, 80, of Houston, died on Saturday, June 7, 2008, at her home in rural Houston.
She was born on July 8, 1927, in Belgrade, Minn., and raised there. In 1947 she married James Sanders in Belgrade. After their marriage Dorothe and James lived in Taylors Falls, Minn. for one year. They then moved to Colombia Heights, Minn., where they lived until 1986, when they retired to a farm in rural Houston. Dorothe was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston and the church circle there.
Dorothe is survived by three sons: Gary (Pat) Sanders of Genoa, Wis., Robert Sanders of Houston, and Douglas (Dayna) Sanders of Canton, Minn.; one daughter: Debra (John) Horbal of Fridley, Minn.; one granddaughter; three great-grand-children and three step-great-grand-children; and by one brother, Walter Ladwig of Columbia Heights, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers, and one sister.
There will be a memorial service for Dorothe at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 13, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter’s Cemetery in rural Houston. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until the time of the service at the church on Friday.
The family prefers memorials directed to Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston.

Dale Richards

Dale W. Richards, 77, of rural Brownsville, Minn. died on Friday, June 6, 2008 at his home after a battle with cancer.
He was born April 7, 1931 in Houston County, the son of William and
Louise (Elsheimer) Richards. He attended school in Reno, Minn. and New
Albin, Iowa. He furthered his education in the service by taking
courses in agriculture. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army in
Korea in 1954-55.
Dale married Fern Thillen on Sept. 14, 1957, in Caledonia. He farmed
near Brownsville and also near Mabel. He was a member of St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church, Brownsville.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Fern; his daughter, Dawn
Richards, Brownsville; son Dean (Teri) Richards, St. Charles, Minn.;
three granddaughters; a brother Virgil (Sandra) Richards, Piedmont,
S.D.; and two sisters, Lois Shelton, New Carrolton, Md., and Virginia
(Donald) Pavek. Janesville, Wis.
Dale was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, John Shelton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am, Monday, June 9, at
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brownsville. Father James McCauley will
officiate and burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Brownsville.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Breza Hall, next to St.
Patrick’s Church, where a rosary will be said at 3 p.m. and a Christian
wake service at 5 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the
service at the hall Monday.

Robert Hagen

Robert M. Hagen, age 88, of rural Mabel, Minnesota died Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at the Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis.Robert was born August 6, 1919 in Riceford, Minn. to Henry L. and Geneva R. (Bell) Hagen. He attended school in Mabel and remained a lifelong area resident as he farmed in Newburg Township of Fillmore County. During World War II he served in the United States Army in Italy and Africa. On October 16, 1950 he married Doris M. Lien at the Mabel parsonage. He was a member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church, a life member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and formely served on the Newburg Township Board.
Robert is survived by a daughter Karen (Tom) Traufler of LaCrosse, Wis.; two grandsons Shanon (Shirley) Vickerman of Caledonia, Minn. and Shelby Vickerman of Mabel; a great grandson Andrew; a sister Ruth (Vernon) Allen of Mabel; a nephew Jonathan (Gwen) Allen of Mabel; a sister-in- law Liz Hagen; and special friend Wauneta Back of Ostrander, Minn. He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother Charles.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel with Rev. Curtis Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery in Mabel with military rites by the American Legion and VFW. Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.

Jerome Mullen

Jerome “Jerry” P. Mullen, 69, of Caledonia, died Friday, May 30, 2008 at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia.
He was born April 1, 1939 in La Crosse, Wis. to John and Agnes
(Fitzpatrick) Mullen. He lived in the Chicago area until returning to
Caledonia in 2000.
He is survived by his wife Lida, Caledonia; grandchildren, Jason and
Danielle; stepdaughter, Maria; one step grandson, Anthony; sisters,
Margaret (Richard) Becker, La Crescent; Pat Mullen, Decorah, Iowa;
Bonnie Becker, Caledonia; brother Bill Mullen, McHenry, Ill.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Renee; and brothers, Jack, Jim, Bud and two infant brothers.
Following Jerry’s wishes there will be no services.

Larry Thorson

Larry E. Thorson, 63, of Houston, Minn. died on Sunday, May 25, due to a farm accident on his farm.
Larry was born on July 22, 1944, in La Crosse, Wis. to Tenart and Mildred (Benson) Thorson. He was raised in Houston and graduated from Houston High School in 1962. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War on the CVA USS Shangri-la. He attended Winona Technical College and worked two years for John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa. He worked for UPS for five years. Larry was a partner in ownership of the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Winona. He married Linda Lemke. They were later divorced. On November 25, 1978, he married Peggy Erkel. Larry was a graduate of the Minnesota State Trooper Academy. He worked as a Minnesota State Trooper for over 28 years. Larry served as a personal body guard for Minnesota Gov. Rudy Perpich. He lived in Lakeville and LeCenter, Minn. prior to moving back to Houston in 1997. He retired from the Minnesota State Patrol in 1998. After his retirement, Larry and Peggy ran their own antique shop in Houston. Larry also worked as a school bus driver for the Houston Public Schools. He was a member of the Houston American Legion and a life member of the Police and Peace Officers Assoc.
He is survived by his wife Peggy; mother, Mildred Gaustad of Houston; four children: Kenneth (Amy Kelly) Thorson of Houston, Erica (Kyle Lee) Thorson of Rathdrum, Idaho, Dolores Thorson of Houston, and Scott Thorson of Houston; one brother, Ted (Betty) Thorson of Houston; two sisters: Nancy (Ray Bobson) Deshayes of Eagle, Colo., and Evonne (Richard) Snow of Houston.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, Tenart Thorson; stepfather, Clifton Gaustad; and by his mother and father-in-law, Kenneth and Dolores Erkel.
The funeral service for Larry will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 31, at his farm (8404 County 4, Houston) with funeral celebrant Daryl Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Yucatan Cemetery in rural Houston with military honors by the Arnet – Sheldon American Legion Post of Houston. Friends may call from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday at Hoff Funeral Homes – Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the farm on Saturday.
