James E. Richards Jr., 51, of Caledonia, Minn. died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at his home after a brief battle with liver cancer.
He was born Dec. 18, 1957 in Hillsboro, Texas to James and Mary
(Simmons) Richards. In May of 2000, he married Linda Sullivan in San
Diego, Calif. and she preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 2008. They
returned four years ago to Caledonia, where James was employed by
Sno-Pac Foods, Inc.
James is survived by his father, James Richards, Sr. of Caledonia; two
daughters; Jessica (Jerry) Littleraven and Brianne (Jason) Cole, both
of Caledonia; one son, Jody Schelen of Caledonia; seven grandchildren;
one brother, John (Jobina) Richards, Eugene, Ore.; three sisters: Mary
Anne Cole (Stan Landis) and Samatha (Brandy) Richards, both of Vernon,
Texas and Cathlyn (Ron) Stinson, Caledonia; and a sister-in-law, Mary
McIntosh, San Diego, Calif. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in
death by his mother and a brother, Richard McIntosh.
A gathering of family and friends was held Saturday, Oct. 24 at Elsie’s Bar and Grill, Caledonia, from 5 p.m. until closing.

Mildred Klankowski

Mildred
C. Klankowski, 90, of Viroqua, Wis., and formerly of Caledonia, Minn.,
died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at Vernon Manor, Viroqua.
She was born April 1, 1919, in Madison, Wis., to George and Olga
(Roble) Heintz. On July 2, 1940, Mildred married Paul Henry Klankowski
in Caledonia and he preceded her in death on March 11, 1990.
Mildred was employed in the Dietary Department of the Caledonia
Hospital for 23 years retiring in 1987. She was a longtime member
of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Caledonia. Mildred lived in
Caledonia until 1999 when she moved to Viroqua to be closer to her
family.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol Jean (Marion) Rudser,
Viroqua, Wis.; three sisters-in-law, Marie Heintz and Lena Heintz, both
of La Crescent, Minn., and Hildegard Klankowski, Reynolds, N.D.
In addition to her husband, Mildred was preceded in death by one
sister, Helen (Saylor) Wheaton; and three brothers, Mervin, Arthur, and
Leslie (Carol Ann) Heintz.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at 11 a.m., at St.
John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Tom Schultz will
officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at
the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu
of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John’s Ev. Lutheran School,
Caledonia.

Dale Runningen

Dale Runningen, 81, a retired Houston-area farmer, died at his home Oct. 19.
Dale was born June 16, 1928, in Caledonia to Martin and Alma (Jorde) Runningen. He married Violet Christopherson on Aug. 25, 1949; they were married 60 years.
Dale and his wife Violet raised five children on their 600-acre farm. He was named Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1960.
Dale served as a Sheldon Township officer for 40 years. He was on the church council of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, held positions as a member of the Houston Sportsmen’s Club and as a 4-H leader. He was active in the local snowmobile club, motorcycle club and John Deere two cylinder tractor club.
He was also a salesman for DeKalb seed corn for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Violet; five children: Roger (Marsha) of Sprinfield, Va., Arlan (Sandy) of Goodview, Minn., Wayne (Patti) of rural Houston, Marlene (Eric Forslund) of San Diego, Cal., and Sharon (Bill) Mahoney of Union Grove, Wis.; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and two brothers: Wallace of Springfield, Mo. and Donald of Caledonia.
A sister Cleone, a brother Maynard and a granddaughter Angela preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Hoff Funeral Homes’ Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
The family prefers memorials to be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Lillian
M. Wuennecke, 91, of La Crescent, Minn., and formerly of New Albin,
Iowa, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at the Claddagh House in La Crescent,
Minn.
She was born June 13, 1918, in Iowa Township, Allamakee County, Iowa,
to George W. C. Meyer and Caroline Meyer. On Oct. 21, 1936, Lillian
married Louis W. Breeser and they later divorced. On Dec. 19, 1965, she
married Roy Wuennecke in Winona, Minn. They lived in New Albin, Iowa
until August of 1998 when they moved to La Crescent. On Sept. 17, 1998,
Roy preceded Lillian in death. Lillian was a longtime member of St.
John’s United Church of Christ. She was employed at Control Data in
Spring Grove, Minn., and then the Lansing Company in Lansing, Iowa,
until her retirement in 1983.
Survivors include one daughter, Lila (Larry) Cina, Viroqua, Wis.; four
sons: Gilman (Luise) Breeser and Melvin (Joyce) Breeser, both of La
Crescent; Gerald (Delores) Breeser, Waukon, Iowa, and Randy (Diane)
Breeser, La Crosse; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one
sister, Gladys Heitman, New Albin.
In addition to her first and second husbands, Lillian was preceded in
death by a great-granddaughter, Casey Lynn Cina; and one sister and
brothers-in-law, Irma and John Johnson and Elmer Heitman.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St.
John’s United Church of Christ, (Wheatland Church) rural New Albin.
Rev. Paul Burgess will officiate. Burial will be in the church
cemetery. Friends may call at the New Albin Community Center on Tuesday
from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m.
until the time of service. Memorials may be given to St. John’s United
Church of Christ, rural New Albin, Franciscan Skemp Hospice, or to the
donor’s choice.

JoAnn Ralston

JoAnn Patricia Ralston, 60, of Galesburg, Ill. died Friday, Oct. 16,
2009 at her home after a courageous battle with skin cancer.
JoAnn was born Feb. 21, 1949 in Shreveport, La., to Charles and
Patricia (Mason) Walker. She was married to Lewis William Ralston on
Feb. 13, 1975 in Oneida, Ill. JoAnn lived in many places, including
Abington, Ill., St. Louis, Mo., Las Vegas, Nev., and Eugene, Ore.
She worked at the New China Café in Galesburg from the time she was 16
until she was in her 40s.
Survivors include her husband of 34 years, her daughter Nichole (Joe)
Klinski, Eitzen, Minn.; four grandchildren; step-daughters, Debra
(Bill) Denithorne, Las Vegas; Denise (Randy) Coleman, Canton, Ill.,
three step-grandchildren; sister-in-law Christina Anderson, E.
Galesburg; and brother-in-law, Gale Purchase, New Boston, Ill.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents; step-father Woodrow Allen;
sister Donna (Hanson) Gorles; mother-in-law, Josephine Purchase;
brother-in-law Richard Anderson; and sister-in-law Barbara Wiborg.
Honoring JoAnn’s request, no visitation or funeral will be
conducted. In lieu of flowers, memorials to OSF Hospice,
Galesburg, Ill. are preferred, and can be sent to Hurd-Hendricks
Funeral Home, Knoxville, Ill.

Mildred Vick, 87, of Decorah, Iowa died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah.
Mildred Joyce (Johnson) Vick was born March 12, 1922, the daughter of
Albert and Ida (Lee) Johnson, near Waukon. Mildred was baptized March
26, 1922, in Glenwood Lutheran Church and was confirmed June 30, 1935,
at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon. Mildred attended rural country
school near Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School May 29,
1939. Mildred married Norman Vick Nov. 14, 1940, in Glenwood Township.
They lived in Glenwood Township and Mildred was the telephone operator
at the Nesset switchboard for the Glenwood Telephone Exchange for seven
years. Mildred worked for 27 years for DECO Products. In 1960, they
moved to Freeport and then into Decorah in 1986. Mildred was a member
of the Glenwood Lutheran Church, the Friendship Circle and the VFW
Ladies Auxiliary.
Mildred is survived by her seven children: LeRoy (Bernice) Vick,
Marion, Iowa; Carolyn (Norman) Nikkelson, Decorah; Roger (Randi) Vick,
Caledonia, Minn.; Ronald Vick, Prairie du Chien, Wis.; Darrell Vick,
Decorah; Curtis (Jan) Vick, Decorah; and Marcella (David) Tveter,
Rosemount, Minn.; 19 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Gordon Johnson, Marion; and
Abner (Mary) Johnson, Watertown, S.D.; one sister, Ruth McClurg,
Viroqua, Wis.; and one sister-in-law, Helen Vick, Decorah.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, on July 1, 1988;
one grandson, Travis Vick; three brothers: Kenneth Johnson, Hartley
Johnson and Donald (Darlyne) Johnson; two sisters-in-law, Carolla
Johnson and Irene Johnson; two brothers-in-law, Clinton McClurg and
Vernon Vick; five sisters-in-law: Myrtle (Bennie) Boe, Hilda (Emil)
Jevne, Eleanor (Walter) Womeldorf, Gladys (Don) Engen Pecinovsky and
Cora (Gordon) Ostrander.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at the Glenwood Lutheran
Church, with Rev. Douglas Mathison presiding. Burial was in the
Glenwood East Cemetery, rural Decorah. Friends called Sunday from 3
until 6 p.m., at the Schluter - Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after
10 a.m., at the church Monday morning.

Gloria B. Garcia, 81, of La Crosse, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born July 18, 1928, in Spring Grove, Minn., to Leonard and
Vivian (Hefte) Beardmore. On Sept. 21, 1946 Gloria married Frank Garcia
at Camp McCoy, Wis., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 1991.
Gloria taught elementary school at St. James Catholic School in La
Crosse for many years, retiring in 1994.
Survivors include three children, Frank (Vanda) Garcia, Eau Claire,
Wis.; Gloria (Dave) Servais, La Crosse; and Anthony (Pam) Garcia,
Holmen; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her step-mother,
Evelyn Beardmore, Waukon, Iowa; her uncle, Roy Hefte, Winona, Minn.; a
step-brother, Fred (Lois) Foster, Minneapolis; and a sister-in-law,
Marian Beardmore, La Crosse.
In addition to her husband, Gloria was preceded in death by her father;
her mother; her step-father, Vince Foster; and her brother, Romaine
Beardmore.
Memorial services will be Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Wesley
United Methodist Church, La Crosse. Rev. Don Iliff will
officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse.
Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time
of service.

Wilma
Dorothy Thimmesch, 88, of Caledonia, Minn., and more recently of
Onalaska, Wis. died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Center, La Crosse.
She was born Wilma Dorothy Fruechte on Aug. 12, 1921 to John and
Frances Fruechte of Eitzen, Minn. On Oct. 28, 1943 Wilma married Harold
Thimmesch, and together they raised seven children. When her children
were older Wilma began working at Dr. Dale Buxengard’s Optometry office
as a receptionist and bookkeeper. She was also an active member of the
Caledonia American Legion Auxiliary and St. Elizabeth’s Society of St.
Mary’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include her seven children: Karen (Albert) LaFleur, Madison,
Wis.; Rita (Bob) Barris, Holmen, Wis.; Ellen Schmidt, Onalaska,
Wis.; Arlene (Roger) Holland, La Crescent; Paul (Connie) Thimmesch,
Oregon, Ill.; George (Sara) Thimmesch, Lake Geneva, Wis.; and Charles
(Laurel) Thimmesch, Hokah; 20 grandchildren, 17
great-grandchildren; one sister, Alta Pfeiffer, Minneapolis; and one
brother, Mervin (Lois) Fruechte, La Crosse.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 12, at St.
Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will
officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation
will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, at Holy Family Hall, behind St. Mary’s
Church, where a prayer service will be said at 4:30 p.m. Friends may
also call one hour prior to the service at the church Monday.
