Arleine Tollefsrud

Arleine Selma Tollefsrud, age 90, died on Aug. 31, 2009 on her dairy
farm in Withee, Wis. where she lived and farmed with her daughter for
the past 15 years.
Arleine was born in 1919 to Peter and Celia (Myhre) Engen. She married Glennys Tollefsrud in 1942. Glennys died in 1986.
She is survived by two sons: Tom (Kathryn), Spring Grove; and Paul
(Sandy), Mabel; four daughters: Elona (Bill) Franciskovich, Red Wing;
Ann Zilly, Spring Grove; Betty (Paul) Abbott, Jenks, Okla.; and Mary
Tollefsrud, Withee; 11 granchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two
brothers: Arne Engen, Mabel; and Stanley Engen, Caledonia.
Arrangements were taken care of by the Cremation Society of Wisconsin.

Merlin Nelson

Merlin J. Nelson, 72, of Dorchester, died peacefully at his home in Dorchester on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009.
He was born Aug. 19, 1937 in Caledonia to Nels and Clara (Gran) Nelson.
He graduated from Loretto High School in Caledonia and served in the
U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He married Sheilah Kumpf on
Nov. 16, 1963.
Merlin owned serveral businesses in the area and he was a rural route carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
Merlin is survived by his wife Sheilah of Dorchester; his children,
Jim, Judy, Joyce, Jane, and Jennifer; 13 grandchildren; and a great
grandson; a sister, Beverly Welscher and brothers, Jerry and Bob Nelson.
He was preceded in death by a son John, and brothers, Lyle and Don.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 25 at
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dorchester. Father Joseph Schneider will
officiate and burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dorchester.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday at McCormick Funeral
Home, Caledonia, where a prayer service will be at 4 p.m. Friends may
also call one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Mary Ellen Moriarty

Mary Ellen Moriarty, age 69, of Aitkin, Minn. died Monday, Sept. 14, 2009 at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, Minn.
She was born Dec. 4, 1939 in Winona to George and Ruby (Hanson)
Moriarty. After graduating from Loretto High School in Caledonia, she
attended the University of Minnesota pursuing studies in journalism and
literature and thereafter she resided in Minneapolis, San Francisco,
New York City, and Wayzata before moving to Aitkin in 1982. Mary Ellen
was well known in the Aitkin community for her work on behalf of the
Aitkin Public Library, Aitkin Friends of the Arts, Community Education,
community theatre, Kinship Partners of Aitkin County, and St. James
Catholic Church.
She is survived by two sisters and brother-in-law: Elizabeth Butler,
St. Paul, and Karen (John) Born, Aitkin; 3 brothers and sisters-in-law:
Dennis (Lisa) Moriarty, Stillwater; Daniel (Tina) Moriarty, Mendota
Heights; and Timothy (Jan) Moriarty, Aitkin; 25 nieces and nephews, and
23 great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law Verne Butler, Jr.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday Sept. 26 at St. James
Catholic Church in Aitkin. Father Clem Gustin will officiate.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Friday in the church and one hour prior to the service.
Funeral arrangements are with Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Rudi Boelter

Rudi Boelter, 66, of Purcell, Okla. died Monday, Sept. 7 at his home after battling cancer.
Rudolph Laverne Boelter was born April 4, 1943 in Winona, Minn. to Hugo
and Leafa (Pratt) Boelter. He spent his early childhood in Winona and
attended school there. He later joined the U.S. Navy. Rudi married his
wife Sherri on March 22, 1972. He was an over the road truck driver for
35 years.
Rudi is survived by his wife Sharon; daughters: Stacy Wannes, Portland,
Ore.; Kristie (Dwaine) Hall, Purcell, Okla.; sons: Carl, Portland,
Ore.; Jeremy (Wendy) Boelter, Eitzen, Minn.,; and Jeffrey (Darlene)
Boelter, Ocala, Fla.; and many grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Boelter, and his brother-in-law Merlin Austin.
Services will be held at a later date.

Anthony Jilk

Anthony J. “Tony” Jilk, 71, of Houston, Minn. died on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at his home.
Tony was born on Sept. 19, 1937, in Omaha, Neb. to August and Anastasia
(Monahan) Jilk. He was raised in Stockton Valley, Minn. On May 7, 1960,
he married Georgia Hinton in Minnesota City, Minn. Tony lived in Looney
Valley (rural Houston) for the last 37 years. He was a farmer and also
worked for Behrens Manufacturing in Winona for 27 years. .
Tony is survived by his wife, Georgia; four children: Jeanne (Tim)
Gensmer, Kasson, Minn.; Daniel (Kathy) Jilk, Cannon Falls, Minn.;
Jennifer (Tom Ostby) Wroblewski, Rochester, Minn.; and Thomas (Jill)
Jilk of Preston, Minn.; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;
three brothers: Joseph (Sandy) Jilk, Fountain City, Wis.; John (Ann)
Jilk, Stockton, Minn.; and Peter (Kay) Jilk, St. Charles, Minn.; two
sisters: Therese Jilk, Rochester; and Christina (Mike) Falkowski,
Stockton.
Tony was preceded in death by one sister Barbara, and one brother, James.
The funeral service will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, at Hoff
Funeral and Cremation Service - Hansen Goodview Chapel in Goodview,
Minn. Following the service Tony’s body will be cremated with burial of
his cremated body in the Oakland Cemetery in Stockton. Visitation will
be from 4 p.m. Monday until the time of the service at Hoff Funeral and
Cremation Service - Hansen Goodview Chapel.

Dennis Murphy

Dennis John Murphy, 55, died Aug. 25, 2009 at home in Henderson, Tenn., from cancer.
Dennis was born Oct. 3, 1953 in Waterloo, Iowa. He later moved to
Caledonia, Minn. with his father. He graduated from Caledonia High
School. He married Candi Bradbury. They had three children. Dennis was
employed as an over the road truck driver.
He is survived by his wife Candi of 27 years, one daughter Shannon,
Tenn.; two sons, Craig (in the Navy); and Shawn, Tenn.; five
grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Tyler, Waterloo, Iowa, and Beverly
Miller, Waverly, Iowa; and two brothers, Samuel (Diann) Sweet,
Brainerd, Minn., and Roger (Mary) Klunder, Oronoco, Minn.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine and Lawrence Murphy.
Dennis donated his body to the University of Tenn., Science Research
Dept., he will later be cremated and buried with his father in
Caledonia.

Ivan Tippery

Ivan W. Tippery, 82, of rural Hokah, died on Saturday morning, Sept. 5, 2009 in his home.
Ivan was born on May 6, 1927 in New Albin, Iowa to Walter and Clara
(Olson) Tippery. When he was in the ninth grade his father died
suddenly. Ivan went to live in South Dakota with his aunt and uncle.
He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and spent time in Germany until his
discharge in 1947. He then worked for his brother-in-law Ed Russell in
Harmony.
He was united in marriage to Agnes Murray of Hokah at St. Peter’s
parsonage on Nov. 26, 1947. They left for Dubuque, Iowa in December of
that year, where Ivan was employed by Dubuque Packing Co. Ivan began
working at Bakalars Bros Sausage factory and was employed there for 40
years. In his retirement years, he drove school bus for Ready Bus Line
for 15 years.
Ivan is survived by his wife Agnes, five sons, Lee (Lisa) and Tom
(Nadeen) of Hokah, Bob (fiancé Ronda Bond) of Mindoro, Wis, Jim of
Hokah and Jerry (Jeanne) of Houston, Minn, six grandchildren, one
great-granddaughter, two sisters, Arlene (Hugh) Donaldson of Quitman,
Texas and Belva (Charles) Abbott of Woodhull, Ill, two sisters-in-law,
Marian (Harold) Coughlin of Hokah and Ella Mae (Roy) Humm of La Crosse,
many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by infant twins,
Kerry and Kathy.
A Mass of Christian Burial followed by military honors will be held on
Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church,
Hokah. Father Paul Breza will officiate. If friends are unable to
attend the funeral, they are invited to a celebration of Ivan’s life
following the funeral from noon until 4 p.m. at the Hokah City Hall. In
lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Peter’s School, any
Veteran’s Association, or the Polish Museum in Winona.
The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent is in charge of arrangements.

Charles
Henry Konkel, 70, died Friday, September 4, 2009 at the Caledonia
Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Caledonia, Minn.
Charles was born on March 19, 1939 in Winona, Minn. to Henry and Sylvia (Modjeski) Konkel.
Charles was married to Bonnie Pellowski at St. John the Baptist
Catholic Church in Caledonia and they were later divorced. Charles was
an independent logger and farmer for his entire life.
Charles and his companion Carolyn Meiners resided in Eitzen, Minn.
Charles is survived by his mother Sylvia Konkel of Winona; two
daughters, Nancy (Abbas) Nedjar of Berryville, Va.; Paula
Mickelson of Spring Green, Wis. and one son James Konkel of Rochester,
Minn.; five grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Konkel (Janice), Eitzen
and Lyle Konkel (Delores ‘Shelley’), Spring Grove. Six sisters
Janice (John) Daley and Phyllis (Charles) Schultz, Lewiston; Doris
(Alfonso) Simonic and Karen (Duane) Paulson, Winona; Maxine
(Harold) Hummel, Lincoln, Neb.; Christine (Michael) Kusz, Iron
Mountain, Mich. He is also survived by his special companion Carolyn
Meiners and her family Carol (Tim) Schulte and children; Charlie
(Danielle) Meiners and children; Dan (Joan) Meiners and children.
Charles was preceded in death by his father in 1989 and an infant sister and brother.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, September 9 at
10:30 am at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia with the Reverand
Gregory Leif officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery,
Caledonia. Friends and family may call from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday,
September 8 at Holy Family Hall behind the church in Caledonia. A
prayer service will be said at 7:30. Friends may also call one hour
prior to the service at the church on Wed. In lieu of flowers,
memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society. McCormick
Funeral Home, Caledonia is assisting the family with arrangements.
