jared_mahr_72.jpgJared Walter Mahr, 20, of Waukon, Iowa, died Saturday, June 20, 2009, following injuries received in an auto accident north of Waukon.

Jared Walter Mahr was born on May 24, 1989 in La Crosse, Wis., the son of Gary Walter Mahr and Judy Elizabeth Schellsmidt. He spent his early years in Dorchester, Iowa and then moved to Mabel, Minn., where he attended school through his junior year. He moved back to the Dorchester area and graduated from Waukon High School in 2007. Jared was currently employed building bridges for Minowa Construction.

Survivors include his father, Gary Mahr and fiancé Kelly of Waukon; his mother, Judy Schellsmidt, Onalaska, Wis.; a sister, April Elizabeth Mahr, Onalaska; maternal grandparents, Evangeline Schellsmidt and Robert Schellsmidt, both of Caledonia, Minn.; and paternal grandparents, Marianne and Walter Mahr of Dorchester.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Dorchester Catholic Church  in Dorchester with Fr. Joseph Schneider  officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Dorchester Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3 p.m. scripture service.

hefte_72.jpgRobert  Warren Hefte, age 89 of Caledonia, died Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Tweeten Lutheran Healthcare Center in Spring Grove, Minn.

He was born Nov. 20, 1919 in Caledonia to Inoh and Wilma (Abbotts) Hefte. He graduated from Caledonia High School in 1938.

He served in the United States Army during WWII, from 1942 to 1946. During this time he was stationed in the South Pacific. He was discharged as a Staff Sgt. from Battery C, 165, AAA Battalion.

On April 14, 1946 Bob married Josephine Burtness at Wilmington Lutheran Church in rural Spring Grove.

Bob attended and graduated from Dunwoody Institute. He partnered with his father in his clothing business, and then went on to be a construction plumber and steam fitter with Local 6, Rochester. He worked all over the states of Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. He retired in 1982.

Bob served as a Boy Scout leader for area Troup #51. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Caledonia, the Plumbers and Fitters Union, Sons of Norway of Spring Grove, the Caledonia V.F.W. and American Legion, and the Caledonia Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife Josephine of Caledonia; four sons: David (Sharon) Hefte, Calif.; Eric (Barb) Hefte, Caledonia; William (Jeanne) Hefte, Winona, Minn.; and James (Debra) Hefte, Rochester, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Wilmington Lutheran Church in rural Spring Grove. Pastor Elizabeth Stempinski will officiate. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Caledonia. Military Rites will be provided by the American Legion and V.F.W. of Caledonia. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wilmington Lutheran Church.

dorettaschmidt72.jpgDoretta (Warber) Schmidt, age 82, of Caledonia, Minn. died Tuesday, June 16 from complications of heart disease at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia, where she had been a resident since 2005.

Doretta Amanda Edith Henselin was born June 11, 19127 to William and Anna (Pieper) Henselin in Mayville Township, Houston County, Minn. She grew up on the family farm, attended country school in Freeburg, and then lived and worked on the family farm. She was married on Nov. 19, 1948 at St. John Lutheran’s parsonage in Stewartville to Harold H. Warber. Following their marriage the couple farmed in Pleasant Grove Township until Harold’s death in 1973. Doretta was remarried on Nov. 10, 1973 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stewartville to Leonard H. Schmidt. They lived in Embarass, Wis. and spent winters in Rockport, Texas until Leonard’s death on Oct. 8, 1991. Doretta moved to Caledonia in 1992 where she had continued to make her home. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Caledonia and its Mothers Club and was a past member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stewartville.

Survivors include Doretta’s daughter Dianne (James) Kemp, Titusville, Fla.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister Lillian (Robert) Bissen, Caledonia; and a brother Gustav (Margery) Henselin, Rochester, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, three sisters, two brothers and an infant brother.

The funeral will take place on Saturday, June 20 at 1 p.m. at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville with Pastor Roger Vomhof officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday afternoon. The family suggests memorials to Caledonia Care and Rehab.
 
Lorraine "Shirley" Skadson PDF Print
skadson_72.jpgLorraine “Shirley” Skadson, 77, of Caledonia, Minn., died suddenly on Thursday, June 11, 2009, surrounded by her family,  at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, after a lengthy struggle with diabetes.

She was born Feb. 17, 1932 in La Crosse, to Melville “Sam” and Lillie (Johnson) Roland. On Sept. 3, 1949 Lorraine married David Richard Skadson and he preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1974. Lorraine worked at Control Data, Rush Products, and the Caledonia Nursing Home until her retirement. She was a member of Immanual Lutheran Church in Caledonia and the Loveless - Eikens American Legion Post 191 Ladies Auxiliary in Caledonia for many years.

Survivors include seven children: Patsy Wiste, Caledonia, Minn.; Cheryl Palmquist, Houston, Minn.; Audrey (Dave) Inglett, Mabel, Minn.; Joyce Gengler (Doug), Holmen, Wis.; Kristie Skadson and Lori Skadson, both of Caledonia; and Lilly (Todd) Carrier, Houston, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and a baby girl on the way; and one brother, Westy (Nora) Roland, Roswell, N.M.

In addition to her husband, Lorraine was preceded in death by her son, James Skadson; and three sisters, Marcella Romie, Florence Morrison, and Doris Johnson.

A visitation with viewing will be Monday, June 15, 2009, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Caledonia. In accordance with Lorraine’s wishes, her body will then be cremated and a memorial service will be Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Steven E. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. In addition to Monday, friends may also call at the church on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
 
William "Bill" Lohff PDF Print
William “Bill” Lohff, age 80, died on May 14, 2009 in Minneapolis.

Bill was born to George and Celia Lohff and was raised in Caledonia, Minn. He was a patent attorney in Illinois.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen; children, David (Kathy), and Barbara (Terry) Glass; six grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Bob Thompson.

wiliammitchell_72.jpgWilliam “Bill” Mitchell, age 62, died Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.

Bill was born in Mc-Gregor, Iowa on March 5, 1947 to James and Teresa (Hammel) Mitchell. He married Ginny M.  Hayes on Oct. 25, 1969 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia, Minn.

Bill served with the U.S. Army from 1967-1969. He worked for the New Albin Police Dept., drove school bus for Eastern Allamakee School District, worked in the roofing business and later attended Gunsmith school in Denver, Colo.He was a hunter’s safety instructor, and a lifetime member and President of Northeast Iowa Whitetails Unlimited for 18 years. He was also a member of the NRA, National Turkey Federation Board, active in his church and community and a proud veteran.

Bill is survived by his wife, Ginny, sons: Jeremy (Amanda), Chad (Laura), Josh (Jill), and Trevor; a daughter, Kelsey; seven grandchildren; his brothers, Lorny (Lucille) and David (Barb),  of New Albin; Raymond (Carol), Maple Grove, Minn.; Jerry (Mary), Alburnett, Iowa; and Earl (Donna), Palo, Iowa; his sisters, Mary Jo Colsch, Caledonia and Esther (Jim) Benesh, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Kenneth, James and Peter Mitchell and a sister Teresa Kubitz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 10, at 10:30 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, New Albin, with military rites to follow. Father Daniel Knipper and Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg will officiate. Visitation will be at the New Albin Community Center on Tuesday June 9, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will also be from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Community Center before the service at the church.

nutt_72.jpgRuth E. Nutt, 83, of La Crosse, died Saturday, June 6, 2009, surrounded by her family at home.

She was born July 29, 1925 in St. Catherine, Iowa to Herman and Margaret (Schilling) Yeager. Ruth was a 1943 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, Dubuque, Iowa. On Jan. 15, 1944, she married John A. Nutt in Liberal, Kansas and he preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 2008. After attending WTC in La Crosse, Ruth received her LPN License in 1969. She was employed at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse from 1963 until 1979. After her retirement, she volunteered for Franciscan Skemp Hospice, Elder Care, and Lifeline.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret (Greg) Kraynek; three sons, Richard (Darlene) Nutt, Joseph (Sherry) Nutt, and John (Kate) Nutt; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Matilda Yeager, Rosemary Sanner, Charles (Inez) Nutt, David (Pam) Nutt, Millie Nutt, Jack Tully, and Lee Bolling.

In addition to her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by  a grandson, Gregory Kraynek; a great-granddaughter, Gretchen Kraynek; and her siblings, Joseph “Joe” Jeager, Grace Kammer, Bernice Larson, Louis Yeager, Herman Yeager, and Fredrick “Fritz” Yeager.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, La Crosse. Father Lawrence Berger will officiate. Entombment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum at Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Rd., La Crosse, on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass.

brady_72.jpgCordula “Cordie” Susan Brady, 95, died at the Hospice Alliance–Hospice House in Pleasant Prairie, Wis. on Tuesday, June 2, 2009.

Mrs. Brady was born in Caledonia, Minn. on Oct. 12, 1913 to Philip and Cecilia (Ernster) Burg. She lived all of her life in Caledonia until moving to Kenosha to be closer with her family, in 1998.

On July 20, 1939, she was united in marriage with Francis Thomas Brady, who preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1984. Cordie owned and operated her own beauty shop in Caledonia for many years.

Cordie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia and St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Kenosha. Over the years, she remained active with various church clubs and guilds, including Catholic Daughters. Cordie was also a proud member of the Marquette University Parent Board.

Surviving are her children, John (Kathleen) Brady, Jean Weissmueller, both of Milwaukee; and Ann Marie (Thomas) Venn of Kenosha; 10 grandchildren; sister, Celesta Sullivan, Caledonia; brothers, Arnold (Betty) Burg, Owatonna, Minn. and Al Burg, Waukon, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Margaret Brady, Owatonna.

Cordie was preceded in death by her sisters, Armella (Matthew) Palen and Leona (Les) Weichert; brothers-in-law, Leo Brady and Jim Sullivan; and sister-in-law, Ivona Burg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church,  Caledonia. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Caledonia. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 9-11 a.m. In memory of Mrs. Brady, memorials to the Alzheimer’s Assn. or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia, has been suggested.
