nevabunge.jpgNeva Adelle Hallan Bunge died Wednesday, Dec. 29 at Tweeten Lutheran Healthcare Center in Spring Grove.

She was born in Spring Grove June 14, 1909 to Oscar and Nellie Onsgard Hallan. She married Elmer Bunge Oct. 6, 1934 and lived on the family farm near Eitzen raising four children.

She was very active in St. Lukes United Church of Christ where she taught Kindergarten Sunday School, the Eitzen B-Square 4-H Club, Farm Bureau Womens Committee, Republican Party, her birthday club,  and also  Trinity Lutheran Church.

She is survived by daughters Barbara Krieger Rhodes (Don), Deerwood, Minn.; Joan (Bert) Goetzinger, La Crescent; Jean (Adrian) Olson, Deerwood; daughter-in-law Yvonne Bunge, Spring Grove, sisters Edy Burns, Caledonia and Gladys Omodt, Aberdeen, S.D.; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer, son Robert, son-in-law Leroy Krieger and sisters Myrtle Brueggeman and Ona Ryan.

Funeral services will be held Sat. Jan. 2, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Renna Giesler PDF Print
Renna Ruth Giesler, age 93, of Caledonia, died Friday, Dec. 25, 2009 at Caledonia Care and Rehab.

Renna was born Oct. 10, 1916 in Claremont, Minn. to August and Ada (Stowers) Batzel. On Jan. 16, 1938 Renna married Forest Giesler. They moved to Caledonia in 1948. Renna worked at a number of jobs outside the home; she retired from the Caledonia nursing home in 1982 and continued working as the custodian at the Caledonia United Methodist Church for 20 years and as a waitress at the Redwood Café into her 80s.

Renna was an active member of the Aidenn Chapter #86 Order of the Eastern Star in Caledonia and received her 50 year pin. She was also an active member of the Caledonia United Methodist Church. During the 1976 Bicentennial, Renna appeared in most of the area parades as Betsy Ross with Forest as Uncle Sam. Forest preceded Renna in death on April 12, 1997.

Survivors include four children, David (Elaine), Emery, S.D.; Robert (Patricia), Cashton, Wis.; Barbara (Dennis) Stone, West Salem, Wis.; and Richard (Bonnie), Caledonia; former daughter-in-law Helen Tafoya, West Jordan, Utah; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; five sisters: Helen Tripp, Lois Gerber, Grace Meir, Eva Mason, and Jeannette Berg; and one brother, Kenneth Batzel.

In addition to her husband, Renna was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Shiffer and Ethel Weatherly; and three brothers, Everett, Jack and Ernest Batzel.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec 30 at 11 a.m. at the Caledonia United Methodist Church. Rev. Sharon Goetzinger will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home Caledonia on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. with an Eastern Star service to be held at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Hilda A. Beneke, 96, formerly of Eitzen, Minn., died Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.

She was born Nov. 5, 1913, in Union City Township, Iowa, to Herman and Lena (Meyer) Haar. On Dec. 3, 1933, Hilda married George Burmester in Eitzen. Together they farmed in Winnebago Township, Minn., until George preceded her in death in Sept. of 1955. Hilda then moved into Eitzen and on March 16, 1973, she married William Beneke at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ.  Bill preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 2005.

Survivors include one daughter, Joann (Dale) Meiners, Eitzen; three step-daughters: Arlene Gade, Eitzen, and Iona Novak and Kathryn (Wayne) Bailey, both of Caledonia; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Walter Beneke, Caledonia.

In addition to her first and second husbands, Hilda was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Nicole; three brothers: Frank, Walter, and Edgar Haar; two sisters: Laura Meiners and one in infancy; and two step-sons-in-law, Lou Novak and Paul Gade.

Funeral services will be Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen. Rev. Kent A. Meyer, Ph.D. and Rev. Debra A. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

lelandklug_web.jpgLeland Joseph Klug, 93, of Caledonia died unexpectedly on Monday, December 21, 2009 at his home.

He was born October 29, 1916, in Caledonia to August and Josephine (Thillen) Klug. Leland graduated from Loretto High School in Caledonia and farmed his entire life west of Caledonia. He married Patricia Demmer on September 2, 1946.

He is survived by his wife Patricia and son Greg, both of Caledonia, two daughters, Mary (Robert) Barrett of Seattle and June Klug of St. Paul, Minn.; and a sister, Pernilla Ernster of Caledonia.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and two brothers, Wilfred and Silas Klug.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am, Wednesday, December 23, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be from 9 to 11:00 on Wednesday morning at Holy Family Hall, next to St. Mary’s Church. Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Church or St. Mary’s School.

loomisjohn.jpgJohn R. Loomis, age 79 of Caledonia, Minn., died on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009 at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Center in La Crosse. 

He was born in La Crosse on Oct. 17, 1930 to John and Edwardina (Heroux) Loomis. He married Bonnie Bautsch on Feb. 8, 1956.  John had proudly served his country with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.

In addition to his wife Bonnie, he is survived by his five daughters, Teresa (John Rabuck) Loomis, Hokah; Kay (Doug) Twite, Houston; Barbara (Tim Kappauf) Twite,  Hokah; Nancy (Greg Schultz) Loomis, Caledonia; Sarah (Tony) Wiste, Sheldon.; his three sons, Russell (Sara) Loomis, Caledonia; Dale Loomis, Chatfield; Tim Loomis, Caledonia; twenty-five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and one brother, Richard (Muriel) Loomis, Caledonia.

He was preceded in death by two sons Robert and Michael, one granddaughter Anna, four brothers and three sisters.

Visitation and celebration of John’s life will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009 at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent. Private family burial will take place at a later date.

Norman A. Horn, 84, of Rochelle, Ill., died Dec. 17, 2009, at Rochelle Gardens following a long illness.

He was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Caledonia, the son of Arthur Horn and Edna (Lee) Horn Benson.

He married Verna Mae Kendall on July 15, 1961. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was wounded in battle and earned the Purple Heart. He worked 17 years for the Northwestern Railroad and 25 years for Chrysler Motors in Belvidere, Ill. He was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rochelle.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Lowell Horn.

Survivors include his wife, Verna of Rochelle; daughters, Cindy Eaton, Cape Coral, Fla.; Kathy Bush, Hattiesburg, Miss.; and Wendy Horn, Rochelle; son Dean (Vicky) Wren, Rochelle; sister Gloria Barros, Kenosha, Wis.; brother Roger Benson, Spring Lake Park, Minn.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Trinity Memory Gardens, Rochelle, with Pastor Gregory Hoffmann officiating. Memorials can be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

The family is being assisted by Unger-Horner Funeral Home,  Rochelle.

Linda Espelien PDF Print
Linda Marie Espelien, 54, of Spring Grove died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

Linda was born Oct. 26, 1955 in La Crosse to Beryl and Adelyn (Larson) Sanden. She was baptized in Houston Lutheran Church on Nov. 20, 1955. She was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Linda was a 1973 Spring Grove High School graduate. On April 1, 1977, she married Gordon Espelien at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove.

In 1990, Linda received a pancreas and kidney transplant. In 2004, she received a second kidney from her sister, Karen.

Linda had previously been employed at Tweeten Lutheran Health Care Center and Red’s IGA in Spring Grove. She currently was enjoying helping out at Country Attic Primitives, also in Spring Grove.

Survivors include her husband, Gordon; her mother, Adelyn Sanden of Spring Grove; her children, Chad (Melissa) Espelien and Heidi Espelien; one granddaughter; her sisters, Barb (Ron) Stortz, Fort Atkinson, Wis.; and Karen (James) Renfrow, Bowling Green, Ky.; her brother, Bruce (Carleen) Sanden, Altoona, Wis.; her sister-in-law, Carol (Dennis) Swedberg,  La Crescent, Minn.; and her brother-in-law, Truman (Carol) Espelien, Spring Grove.

In addition to her father, Beryl Sanden, Linda was preceded in death by her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Emma and Theodore Espelien; a sister in infancy; her uncle, Ronald Sanden; and her aunt, Arlene Pederson.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Pastor Stephanie Frey will officiate. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

wiegrefe.jpgAlpha Wiegrefe, age 95 of Spring Grove, died Sunday Dec. 13, 2009 at Tweeten Lutheran Health Care Center in Spring Grove.

Alpha was born on June 3, 1914 to Alfred and Lena (Lien) Storlie. She was one of eleven children.

She graduated from high school, and had two years of  Normal Training. She taught in rural schools for 13 years.

During WWII, Alpha went to San Diego to work in an aircraft factory. She worked on riveting and buffing parts. Later she held a job assembling radios in Rochester, Minn., and also at St. Mary’s Hospital  in Rochester.

Alpha married Willard Wiegrefe in 1963 at Faith Lutheran Church in Black Hammer, Minn. The couple farmed in Wilmington Twp. for many years.

She was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s United Church  of Christ and it women’s groups.

Survivors include her husband Willard of Spring Grove; her brothers Norman (Alma) Storlie and Irvin Storlie of Spring Grove, and her sister Doris (Delvin) Folkert,  Plainview, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her two brothers Lorrin and Luther, and her five sisters Lyla (Wallace) Lockhart, Inez (William) Wilhelmson, Donna (Glen) Albaugh, Ethel (Raymond) Olson, and Viola (Gerhard) Alstad.

Funeral services will be held Wed. Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Debra R. Meyer, and Rev. Kent A. Meyer, Ph.D will officiate. Friends may call Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
