Death by indifference and neglect
To the Editor:
Much fortune, blood and life has been spent over the history of our country. Who can watch the invasion of Normandy and not be struck by the bravery of men who knew that they may very well not live to see tomorrow. To this day that has been repeated often in our history.
Today we must ask the question: “For what did they die, and for what reasons are they dying?” Freedom for which they fought and died are being sacrificed on the altar of self-serving agendas and pursuit of personal power.
Freedoms we have enjoyed, albeit in an imperfect nation made up of imperfect (sinful) people, will be a thing of history to our children and grandchildren. We can lay blame on self-serving politicians, but that overlooks the fact that we as citizens have become lax, indifferent, and neglectful of our blessings, privileges, and freedoms.
It is the populace of this country that sends to Washington those who are dismantling the country that we have known, and for which men and women have died. Indifference to the truth and neglect of the truth ultimately results in the loss of truth. What a horrible judgment upon indifference and neglect for America.

Reader wants reasoned discussion
To the Editor:
Greg Davids still insists that the Democrats’ proposal to pay doctors to help elderly people create a “Living Will” is really a way for Big Government to force us into “end-of-life counseling”. What is his evidence? “There is nothing in these sections that state [that it is] ‘elective’ or ‘voluntary.’ “
Mr. Davids, the proposed bill will also pay for surgeries, psychiatric counseling, birth control…you name it. Nowhere does the bill state that these things will be elective or voluntary! By your logic, unnecessary surgeries and therapy--even forced sterilization--will result. How silly this is. Please put on your thinking cap!
And how is it possible for you to claim that the proposed bill “definitively” contains no restrictions on illegal non-citizens? The bill says--and now I am quoting from the actual document, H.R. 3200 (from the Congressional website www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h3200/show where all readers can find the full text of the bill.): “NOTHING IN THIS SUBTITLE SHALL ALLOW FEDERAL PAYMENTS FOR AFFORDABILITY CREDITS ON BEHALF OF INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE NOT LAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES.”
We appreciate the difficulty of your job. It’s just that many of us would prefer intelligent discourse to over-simplification, obfuscation and manipulation. Because right now many of us feel that you prefer to manipulate us to a position, rather than asking us what our position is.

What’s happening at the Catholic cemetery?
To the Editor:
Have you been out to the Catholic cemetery to visit a loved one’s resting place lately? Have you found that the memorial you so lovingly placed at the grave of your family member has disappeared? I have. And to my utter dismay I found my memorial thrown in a heap with hundreds of others. The memorial was retrieved from the dump and placed back at the grave time and time again only to find it back in the dump the next day. Why is this happening? The lawn care professionals have stated that they do not have a problem mowing around memorials. So, why then, does someone find it necessary to dismantle the memorials that so many of us have placed there to honor our loved ones? When this is one of the ways we show our respect and love for our departed family members, why must it continually be destroyed? The Catholic cemetery has always been a beautiful place to visit. Now it is beginning to look like a dump site. To grieve the death of a loved one is a very long and painful process. Please let us show our love and respect without it being destroyed.

Let’s get our country moving again
To the Editor:
When Congress returns to Washington after Labor Day, there will be many important issues up for debate. One of those issues that Congress will need to address is the future of our federal highway and transit programs.
The current six-year transportation act will expire at the end of September and Congress will need to take action to keep the dollars that we pay in federal gas tax flowing back to the states. The Administration has proposed an 18-month delay in passing a new six-year transportation bill. That could easily stretch to two years or more of waiting for reform and the funding that we need to improve the safety and efficiency of our transportation system.
Congressman Jim Oberstar, chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has developed a new six-year transportation bill that should be enacted. In these tough economic times, we need more jobs in construction and a better transportation system that will support our businesses as they rely on the efficient movement of people and goods around the state.
Investing in our aging infrastructure is something we can all agree on. These investments create jobs in construction, manufacturing, materials and provide spin-off benefits throughout the economy. In the end, we all benefit from safer roads and bridges and better transit service.
Let’s urge our members of Congress to get the job done on time and pass a new six-year transportation act that will get our country moving again.

Support made for a successful county fair
To the Editor:
The Houston County Fair was a success due to our local sponsors and volunteers. Negotiations during the past three years made it possible to offer many spectacular attractions for all ages.
This year we welcomed a new and exciting carnival, grandstand events and convenient transportation. None of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors, volunteers and fairgoers from many area communities.
The Houston County Fair Board hopes to continue to bring new and exciting events for future fairs. This will be possible with everyone’s continued support.
See ya at the Fair!

People need to make decisions on their healthcare
To the Editor:
When is a universal healthcare program, not a universal healthcare program? When it is an attempt at social engineering. Scott Fischbach, Executive Director of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, has alerted many to a portion of the health care bill called the Capps Amendment. What the federal administration could not pass openly as a Freedom of Choice Act, could be added to a program for universal healthcare. We don’t want our federal government determining the value of our lives, overseeing our parenting and mandating taxpayer funded abortions. With easy access to free abortions the numbers of women forced into abortions by partners or others will soar.
People want control of their own healthcare. They don’t want insurance companies or the government telling them what they can and cannot do. I’ve listened to people from Eitzen to Goodview and Spring Valley to La Crescent. There are some great ideas to make healthcare more affordable and available for everyone.
It is time to call this legislation what it really is--wrong. Be very firm when you contact our legislators. This is legislation we must live without.
