The Caledonia boys basketball team improved its season record to 10
wins and five losses last week with wins over Wabasha-Kellogg (75-58),
Mabel-Canton (87-55), and Southland (82-65). Two of the three victories
were Three Rivers Conference wins, which kept the Warriors tied for
second with Chatfield with 8-2 records.
Caledonia 75 W-K 58
Hot shooting, tough defense and a very balanced scoring attack was the
perfect recipe for a TRC road win for the Warriors over Wabasha-Kellogg
on Jan. 22.
Caledonia jumped out to a fast start, led by 20 at the half and coasted
in for the 17-point win. Coach Josh Diersen utilized his entire squad
in the game, with 12 different players scoring points.
Junior forward Ryan Goetzinger led the offensive attack with 18 points
and six rebounds. Senior guards Kody Moore and Craig Loeffler both hit
double figures with 14 points each. Loeffler also dished out four
assists.
Bobby Augedahl chipped in seven points, while Dustin King and Kyle
Runningen each had four, Zach Gran and Cody Haugstad had three points
each, and Alex Klug, Isaac Fruechte, Ethan Lapham, and Mike
Ideker each had two points. Fruechte was second on the team with four
rebounds.
“The kids moved the ball around very well and looked for the open
shot,” Diersen noted. “And it showed with their shooting percentages.”
CHS was 53 percent from the field, including 35 percent (5-14) from
three-point land, and made 10 of 14 free throws (71 percent).
CHS 87 M-C 55
The Warriors picked up a non-conference game last Thursday when they
traveled to Mabel and returned home with a 32-point victory over the
Mabel-Canton Cougars.
Caledonia jumped out to a commanding 25-3 lead in the first eight
minutes of the first half, as their trapping full-court press forced
numerous M-C turnovers and easy shots for the Warriors.
The home-standing Cougars were not ready to cry “Uncle,” however, and
scored on six straight possessions, while holding the Warriors
scoreless. The 22-point CHS lead was cut to a 38-30 as the first half
came to a close.
CHS took control of the game in the opening minutes of the second half, and cruised to the 32-point win.
The hot-shooting Warriors canned nine of 21 treys (43 percent), shot at
a 47 percent clip from the field and made 18 of 26 free shots (69
percent).
Moore had a big night for the Warriors, scoring 24 points, picking up
eight steals, dishing out eight assists, and pulling down seven
rebounds. Goetzinger also had a big night for CHS with 22 points, five
rebounds and four steals. Haugstad added 14 points, Loeffler had 10,
Lapham had six, Gran had four, Klug, King, and Runningen had two points
each, and Ideker had one point. Augedahl did not score, but had four
assists.
“Once again, we moved the ball very well and worked for the good shots.
We did have a lapse towards the end of the first half. We’ve got to
learn to play more consistent ball. I was happy to get so many kids
into the game,” Diersen noted.
Caledonia 82 Southland 65
The Warriors hosted the Rebels of Southland Friday night at the local gym and sent the Rebs packing with an 82-65 loss.
“Southland gave us a tough game the first time we played them,” Diersen
said. “We beat them the first time out, but it was a battle. The kids
are really playing well together. We put two good halves together. I
was very pleased with their performance Friday night.”
The Warriors took control of the game from the outset and led by 26
points, 46-20, at the half. With nine minutes left in the game, and the
CHS lead close to 30 points, Diersen cleared the bench and let the
reserves play the remainder of the game.
Goetzinger scored a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Moore
had 17 points ad five steals, Loeffler and Augedahl each tallied 16
points. Runningen had eight points, Klug had four points and five
rebounds, Gran had two points and three assists, Lapham had two points
and two blocked shots and Ideker had one
point.
The Warriors shot 42 percent from the field, including 38 percent from
outside the three-point arc, and 62 percent from the charity line.
