“Caledonia has a reputation for being very supportive.”
That’s a quote from Carolyn Hollatz who, along with the help of others, is organizing a Spaghetti Supper benefit for Lois Johnson. The benefit will take place on Sunday, Feb. 17 serving from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The event will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 419 East Grove Street, in Caledonia.
Johnson has been an active member of the church for many, many years and is currently the church finance secretary. Previously she has held the position of treasurer and worked tirelessly on behalf of the other church members.
“She is a wonderful, wonderful person,” said Hollatz.
The benefit is meant to help the Johnson family with the costs associated with several severe medical issues realized by Lois.
She has been in a hospital for 13 straight weeks with heart and stomach ailments. For the past two weeks she has been at a hospital in La Crosse. Prior to that, Johnson was hospitalized in Madison, Wis. which added additional financial pressures to her husband Ron.
“He spent 60 days at a hotel in Madison,” said Marie Ellestad, the Financial Director with the Houston County Chapter of Trivent Financial for Lutherans, who will provide supplemental funds for the benefit. “The benefit is meant to help with the additional costs for transportation, the hotel and food costs. We’re trying to raise money to offset the expense.”
Ron and his wife Lois have five children and have been married well over 50 years. The couple ran several businesses in the Caledonia area, and Lois most recently worked at the school in the lunch line. An active volunteer with the church, life might never be the same for her since the illness.
“She’s determined,” smiled Hollatz. “She’s got a strong will and she’s strong. She has said she wants to come back and continue as the finance secretary, which is great; it gives her something to look forward to.”
The cost of the Spaghetti Supper benefit is ages 10 and up $8, ages 5-9, $4 and four and under are free.
