Benson elected 3rd District Chief Judge

Judge Robert R. Benson was elected as the new chief judge of the Third Judicial District on Jan. 30 at a meeting of the 23 judges of the district. The Third Judicial District consists of the 11 southeastern Minnesota counties. Judge Benson will take office on July 1, replacing current chief Judge William A. Johnson. The chief judge has the general administrative authority over the courts within the judicial district in addition to his trial court judge duties and responsibilities. Judge Benson will remain chambered in Fillmore County during his term as Chief Judge.
Judge Jeffrey D. Thompson was elected as the new Assistant Chief Judge of the Third Judicial District on Jan. 30. Judge Thompson will also take office on July 1. He will replace current Assistant Chief Judge Robert R. Benson. The Assistant Chief Judge is assigned various administrative responsibilities, in addition to his trial court judge responsibilities. Judge Thompson will remain chambered in Winona County during his term as Assistant Chief Judge.
