“Top to bottom, we wrestled well,” coach Jay Tolleson said of his team’s 46-16 victory over St. Charles last week. The Caledonia/Houston wrestlers improved their record to 9-9, quite an improvement from where they were.

With Dan Wermager and Casey Stemper at the ninth grade and under state tournament, it gave Tolleson a chance to put Tyler Krage and Zach Buttell into the lineup.  “We are going to put Zach on our tournament team as an alternate and we wanted to get him a varsity start,” explained Tolleson.

To see the score of Tyler Stemper’s match, conversation might focus on a loss. Stemper fell behind early but came back and actually recorded a fall. The timekeeper said the buzzer had sounded before the fall was called and Stemper lost 11-9.

Tanner Benson notably won a match at 103 over a tough opponent.  Lee Burg, Tyler Krage,  and Blake Knutson all won by falls. Troy Frank won by a decision.  Decisions were notched by Willie Krage, Lyndon Becker and Buttell. Owen Fitzgerald won by forfeit and Chris Myhre won by injury default.

“It was a good team win. We had a strong start winning the matches up to 140,”

Wermager, Casey Stemper place fifth at ninth grade and under state meet

Freshman Danny Wermager and eighth graders Casey Stemper  each placed fifth in a 16 wrestler bracket state ninth grade and under tournament on Saturday.

“It’s quite an accomplishment for them. There was only one class,” praised coach Jay Tolleson.

Section One team tournament
begins next week

The section team tournament starts a week from Thursday. The coaches will decide the seeding on Monday night.

“We know we will be traveling,” said coach Jay Tolleson in an announcement that his team will not be in the top four seeds.

“It will be a toss up between PEM, Byron, and Kasson-Mantorville.”

The season is rapidly drawing to a close.  The state tournament is only three weeks away.
