By picking up two more Three Rivers Conference wins this past week, the Caledonia boys basketball team solidified its second-place spot in the TRC. The Warriors dispatched a tough Kingsland team 72-69 last Thursday night and then topped St. Charles Saturday night 68-57 on the road. The two wins improved the Warriors TRC record to 10-2, tied for second place with Chatfield, and their over-all record to 12-5.

Warriors 72 Knights 69

The Warriors traveled to Spring Valley to take on always tough Kingsland and returned home with a three-point win.

The game wasn’t as close as the final score indicated, according to coach Josh Diersen. The Caledonia boys jumped out to a quick lead, as they got hot from the outside. Caledonia hit 11 of 15 treys in the first half and held a 49-33 halftime advantage.

The Warriors continued to control the tempo of the game in the second half, and led by 12 points with less than three minutes remaining. That’s when Kingsland’s Josh Hagen took over the game and scored eight of his game-high 28 points during an 8-0 run. A couple of key rebounds in the final minute by Ryan Goetzinger, who pulled down 19 for the game, preserved the win for the Warriors.

The Warriors were led by Craig Loeffler, who had 17 points and six assists. Kody Moore added 14 points and also had six assists. Goetzinger had 12 points to go along with his game-high 19 boards, Zach Gran chipped in 12, Bobby Augedahl had 11, and Kyle Runningen had six.

The Warriors hit 13 of 25 from beyond the three-point line (52 percent), 48 percent from the field and 9 of 17 from the free throw line for 52 percent.

Warriors 68 Saints 57

Caledonia picked up its 12th win of the season with a 68-57 victory at St. Charles Saturday night. It was a make-up game from the original Jan. 29 date, which was postponed due to a winter storm.

While the Saints came into the game with just four wins on the season, they played the local quintet tough during most of the game. The Warriors held a slim 32-29 lead at the half. Caledonia out-scored the Saints 36-28 in the second half for the 11-point margin of victory.

Loeffler led the Caledonia offensive attack with 18 points. Moore and Goetzinger each had 15 points, Gran added eight, Augedahl had five, Dustin King, Alex Schleich, and Michael Ideker each had two points and Ethan Lapham had one point for the Warriors.

This week

The Warriors traveled to Dover-Eyota Tuesday, Feb. 5 and then host Rushford-Peterson Friday night. Next week CHS is on the road to Lewiston-Altura Feb. 12 and then hosts Fillmore-Central Thursday night in a make-up game.

Doc Schoeberl honored

MJ “Doc” Schoeberl, who has served as the athletic trainer for both the boys and girls basketball teams for more than 20 years, will be honored for his many years of service this Friday night during halftime of the boys game against Rushford-Peterson.

“Doc has been a very loyal supporter of Warrior basketball for many years. He’s not retiring. We just though it was time to tell him thanks,” Diersen noted. “We like to encourage everyone to turn out for Friday night’s game and give Doc a  big thank you.”
