“We played one of the best fundamental games from start to finish that
I have seen us play this year,” said head coach Scott Sorenson of his
team’s effort against Kingsland. “The girls really played with the
determination, heart and passion it takes to win.”
And win they did, by a final score of 69-57.
“I was very impressed with our focus, I could tell in the locker room
that they were ready to go,” said Sorenson of his team’s
preparation. “We were down early 0-7, but we were getting great
looks on offense and playing very well on defense, the shots were just
not falling.”
Despite the slow start, the Warriors hung in there and mounted several nice little runs to get back into the game.
“The girls never got discouraged and we took a time-out and adjusted a
few things and then we started to roll,” said Sorenson. “We beat
them in all facets of the game. We knew going in that we could
win, but we just had to prove it to ourselves and they did that.”
The win locked the two schools in a tie at the top.
“It was a big win for us as it put us in a tie for the conference lead
at 12-2 with Kingsland and it gave them only their second loss of the
season,” said Sorenson. “Cassie Gran really was productive
scoring 21 of her game high 25 points in the second half. They
simply could not stop our post players and our guards did a great job
of getting them the ball, we had just some great offensive sets
throughout the game.”
Megan King scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds. Laquita
Becker added 12 points and four assists. Aly Meyer and Libby Augedahl
had eight points each with Meyer adding seven boards, and Augedahl
adding 10.
The Warriors led by one, 26-25 at the half.
Defeat Wabasha-Kellogg
It could have been the perfect opportunity for a let-down game.
However, after defeating their ranked rival Kingsland, 69-57, the Lady
Warriors continued to handle their business and defeated
Wabasha-Kellogg, 58-51 in Three Rivers Action Saturday night.
“I was worried going into this one that we may see a let down after the
big win on Thursday, but the girls came out and at times really
executed on the offensive end, it was also nice that Laquita Becker was
red hot from the three point line, ending up with four on the night,
three of which came in the first half,” said Sorenson.
The Warriors were at a disadvantage down low because of injury.
“We were a little short handed at the post with the injury to Aly Meyer
in the b-squad game, but the rest of the team picked up the slack and
we came out with the win,” the coach said. “In the Three Rivers
Conference any win is big. We simply did what we had to do to
stay on top of the conference.”
Led by a solid scoring performance by Laquita Becker who paced the
Warriors with 17 points, Caledonia jumped out to a four point half-time
advantage by out-scoring their conference foes 31-27 in the first
stanza. After the break, the Warriors continued to out hustle
Wabasha-Kellogg out-scoring them 27-24 for the eventual seven-point win.
Becker was helped in her cause by Libby Augedahl who chipped in with 16 points.
Cassie Gran scored 11 points, while Megan King added eight points of her own.
Jenna Burmester scored three points, and Sarah Colleran and Brianna Vick each added a basket.
Augedahl and Vick each had seven rebounds on the night and King and Colleran were in a sharing mood dishing out six assists.
