Roger C. Kaufmann, 82, of Brownsville Minn., and formerly of La Crosse, died Sat. Feb. 9, 2008.
He was born Aug. 20, 1925 in Mishicot, Wis. to Raymond C. and Clara
(Skwor) Kaufmann. The eldest of six children, he worked on his parents’
and grandparents’ farms until graduating from high school and joining
the United States Navy at age seventeen. He was on active duty during
WWII and the Korean war, and continued his military career in the Naval
Reserves, serving as Commanding Officer of several units at the La
Crosse Naval Reserve base before retiring at Lieutenant Commander in
1985.
In 1946 he married Elaine Bohm of Two Rivers, Wis. They moved to Kansas
City, Kan. to attend the Kansas City School of Watchmaking, then
settled in La Crosse in 1951, where Roger worked for Haas Jewelers
before opening Kaufmann Jewelers. He retired in 1987 and resided in
Brownsville.
He is survived by six children: Rick (Martha) Kaufmann, St. Louis, Mo.;
Kurt (Marla J.) Kaufmann, La Crosse; Tamara Kaufmann, La Crosse; Chris
Kaufmann, La Crosse; Mark (Paula) Kaufmann, Onalaska, Wis., and Matthew
Kaufmann, Red Granite, Wis.; ten grandchildren, one great-grandson and
another due in April; sisters Phyllis Mott, Mishicot, Wis.;
Eileen Wolodkiewicz, Dayton, Ohio; Karen Anthony, Phoenix,
Ariz.; and a brother Richard, Hiles Corners, Wis.
He was preceeded in death by his wife Elaine, and a brother Karl.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brownsville. Father Gregory Leif will
officiate. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the
church.
McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia is assisting the family with arrangements.
