The Caledonia/Houston wrestling team ended its dual meet season with
wins over Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton (FCLMC) and Southland
last week.
Top FCLMC 51-18
On Thursday, the Warriors won their final home meet of the season at Parents Night with the victory over FCLMC, 51-18.
Highlighting the meet was the strong finish with five straight wins from the wrestlers at the end of the lineup.
“That is an area where we have improved,” coach Jay Tolleson said of
his wrestlers in the five heaviest weights. “It was only 24-19
after 152. We could have gotten a little nervous. Instead,
we turned it into a blowout.”
Starting at 160, Casey Stemper won by a fall and Troy Frank downed a
tough opponent, 4-2. Then, Blake Knutson, Aleksander Lorentzen,
and Chris Myhre all won by falls to close out the meet.
Also getting falls were Lee Burg and Owen Fitzgerald. Willie
Krage won by decision as did Tyler Stemper. Tanner Benson won by
forfeit.
“The whole school was battling a cold bug all of last week and we had a
makeshift lineup for both meets,” explained Tolleson. Cullen
Becker was out of the lineup for this meet.
Beat Southland 51-18
On Friday, more lineup changes were in store for the makeup meet at
Southland. “We put Tyler (Stemper) at 140 and Owen (Fitzgerald)
at 145.” In this meet, Becker and Knutson were out.
The Warriors benefited from three forfeits in the 51-18 victory.
The Warriors were led by Burg, Stemper, Sonny Eisenhuth and Myhre
with pins. Benson had a technical fall and Fitzgerald had a major
decision. Winning by forfeit were Zach Buttell, John Schutte, and
Troy Frank.
Tolleson remarked that Travis Frank had a couple of opponents in both of his losses.
Team tournament
begins Thursday
The first round of the section tournament will start on Thursday and
Caledonia/Houston will know where it will travel after Monday night’s
seeding meeting.
If the Warriors win their first meet, they will face the host
team. The winner travels to Rochester for the section finals on
Saturday. The first round is at 11 a.m. and the finals for the
trip to the state will be at 1 p.m. Those matches will be held at
the Rochester Civic Center Taylor Arena.
Weather issues
If any of the four sub-section meets cannot be held on Thursday because
of weather, all of the teams in the sub-section will advance to
Rochester to decide the section champion on Saturday, Tolleson
explained.
Observers thought Plainview/Elgin-Millville would be the favorite to be
the top seed. Now, it appears as if Byron will be the likely top
seed with Waseca second and PEM third.
On Monday morning, Tolleson said he hoped his team had a good weekend to get healthy.
