The Caledonia boys basketball team made it seven in a row last week, as
they topped Dover-Eyota on the road Feb. 5 by a 62-44 score and then
bested visiting Rushford-Peterson last Friday night 57-45. The two wins
improved the Warriors’ record in the Three Rivers Conference to 12-2,
and their season record to 14-5.
Warriors 62 Eagles 44
The Warriors went on the road Feb. 5 and returned home with a hard-fought 62-44 over Dover-Eyota.
“D-E plays a tough 2-3 zone and forces teams to shoot from the
outside,” Warrior coach Josh Diersen explained. “We started out kind of
cold, which kept the game close.”
Caledonia held a slim 24-22 lead at halftime, but started hitting their
outside shots in the second half, which opened up the Eagle zone. The
Warriors started driving the lane, forcing some D-E fouls. Craig
Loeffler hit five straight free throws, and Kody Moore nailed four of
six free shots.
Once the Warriors took control of the game, they slowed the offense
down, and forced the Eagles to foul to get the ball back. CHS continued
to hit from the charity line, making 13 for 19 (68%) for the game.
Loeffler led the offensive attack with 16 points. He also had four
rebounds and three assists. Moore also hit double figures with 14
points, and had five assists and three steals. Zach Gran scored eight
points, had seven rebounds and three steals. Gran, who didn’t start
playing until after the Christmas break, is leading the TRC in three
points. The senior guard has hit 16 of 31 for 51 percent.
Ryan Goetzinger had five points and nine rebounds, Bobby Augedahl had
three points and three assists. Dustin King, Alex Klug, and Alex
Schleich each had two points.
CHS 57 R-P 45
The flu bug hit Caledonia High School in a big way last week and Coach
Diersen said he was very happy to pick up two wins with a depleted
squad.
“The kids really had to gut it out against Rushford-Peterson,’” the
coach said. “We had a lot of sick kids and those who could play weren’t
100 percent. But we picked up the win.”
The Warriors held a 28-23 halftime lead, and then hit some shots in the
second half to pad their lead. CHS didn’t shoot real well from the
field (just 34 percent), but they did have a good night from the free
throw line, hitting 68 percent.
Gran led the CHS offense with 14 points. He made four of seven from
three-point land. Loeffler had 13 points, six assists and five steals,
Moore had 13 points and five steals, Goetzinger had eight points and a
game-high 12 boards, Augedahl had six points and five rebounds, King
had two points, and Ethan Lapham had one point.
This week
The Warriors traveled to Lewiston to take on a tough Lewiston-Altura
team Tuesday night and then entertain a very good Fillmore Central
squad Thursday night.
