The Republicans gathered in the Media Center. The Democrats, just down
the hall in the Home Ec. room. They were there on “Super Tuesday” to
caucus for their choice to be the next President of the United States.
Just down the hall from their locations, however, were 100 or so folks
who had the right idea. Their cars were parked in the Caledonia High
School parking lot to see a basketball game.
“The girls had payback on their minds,” said head coach Scott Sorenson.
“We felt we played very poorly the first time we met when they beat us
by 24 points. The girls were determined to show themselves that they
were not the same team.”
The home team Warriors played the role of McCain to Dover-Eyota’s Giuliani and thumped them 68-30.
“We won 68-30, and this is to a very solid team who is second in our
conference,” said Sorenson. “I think this really gives the girls
a lot of confidence going down the stretch.”
The Warriors utilized a new press defense to show D/E something they’d not yet seen.
“We have been working on a little different press since Christmas and
the girls felt they were ready to try it out in competition,” said
Sorenson. “They were obviously correct as we just came out and
dominated the game getting out to a 21-3 lead early in the first half
and coasting the rest of the way.”
Sorenson notes the Eagles just did not have an answer for the Warriors new press.
“We talk about it all the time for this defense to work we need to sell
out on it and they did,” he said. “Dover just did not have an answer
for it. I was so impressed on our girls effort, they simply
dominated their opponent.”
Earning the most delegates on the night was Libby Augedahl who scored
20 points. Another good showing was turned in by Sarah Colleran who
scored 14 points.
“Libby Augedahl had a great night scoring a season high 20 points,”
said Sorenson. “Megan King was just a force on our press, she
does so many of the little things to help us win, they simply cannot
pass over her on our trap. Sarah & Laquita did a great job of
rotating and taking away the middle pass.”
Cassie Gran scored seven points and Megan King scored nine points.
Jenna Burmester scored six points as did Brianna Vick.
The Warriors pulled out to an early lead and never looked back. At one
point they were up 19-3 in the first half, and led at the break 35-16.
“Brianna and Cassie were great in the post moving without the ball and controlling the boards,” said the coach.
The Warriors outscored the Eagles 33-14 in the second half to close out the win.
Rushford-Peterson game
Caledonia blew out Three River’s rival Rushford-Peterson, 68-30.
“We came out with our new press, but we just were not selling out on it
so we switched to man and the girls just were all over the place, we
totally took them out of their game,” said Sorenson. “It was
another game in which the girls felt we had something to prove as we
had lost to them twice this summer.”
The coach is pleased with his team’s intensity and effort.
“I just love the way we are playing basketball right now, we are
creating havoc on the defensive end and being very patient on the
offensive end, some of the passing in this game was just
outstanding.”
As in the D/E game, Augedahl again led the way for the Warriors.
“Libby Augedahl was again impressive scoring a team high 19 points, she
was just all over the place. Sarah Colleran and Laquita Becker
just went right by their defenders to get to the lane. Megan
King, Cassie Gran and Brianna Vick played great defense and made their
offense struggle.”
Gran finished with 13 points while Becker and Vick each had six points. Colleran finished the night with 10 points.
“I just love the team play we are getting right now, when we play like this we are hard to beat,” closed Sorenson.
