Got a classic car, a motorcycle, or just enjoy cruising on the scenic back roads of Houston County? Then circle June 20 on your calendar.
The first annual Camp Winnebago Motorcycle and Classic Car Rally will be held Saturday, June 20. Participants will have an opportunity to take a leisurely drive around the county, with all the proceeds going to help pay for camperships for persons with developmental disabilities.
“This was really Elsie Rud’s idea,” Camp Winnebago Director Rande Gustafson said. “Elsie is on our board of directors. We are always looking for ways of raising more money to help people attend our camp. She knew some of the people who might be interested in participating in an event like this. She was willing to organize it and deserves a lot of the credit.”
Registration will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Elsie’s Bar and Grill in downtown Caledonia with free coffee and rolls available to all participants. The cost is $25 per vehicle and $10 per passenger. The registration fee includes a meal, music, a map and door prizes at each stop. Persons who pre-register at any of the seven participating businesses will receive a free T-shirt.
The rally will begin at Elsie’s, head east to Brownsville to the Shellhorn, then follow the Mississippi River to the Crescent Inn in La Crescent. From there the rally will travel to Hummer’s Pub in Hokah and west down the Root River valley to Houston and JT’s Corner. From Houston the rally will head south along the South Fork valley, through Yucatan and Black Hammer before stopping at Doc’s Blue Moose in Spring Grove. Motorists will next follow Waterloo Creek south and east out of Spring Grove for a stop at Rosco’s in Eitzen. From Eitzen, the rally will travel north on Highway 76 back to Elsie’s Bar and Grill in Caledonia.
Silent and live auctions are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. with music to follow.
“We’re hoping for a good crowd and to make this an annual event,” Gustafson noted. “This can be a real win-win situation for Camp Winnebago and the various participating businesses in the communities throughout the county. It’s a beautiful ride that’s planned, and we’re hoping folks will be spending a little money at each of the stops along the way.
“This is open to anyone who wants to participate,” Gustafson continued. “You don’t have to have a classic car or motorcycle. If you want to take a scenic drive and donate some money to help with camperships, join the fun.”
Gustafson said they are still accepting donated items for the auctions, as well as looking for volunteers who wish to help with registration or the activities following the rally. Call Gustafson at (507) 724-2351.
Camp Winnebago is located five miles south of Caledonia on Winnebago Creek. It is a private, non-profit organization established and dedicated to serving the recreational needs of adults and children with development disabilities. To learn more about Camp Winnebago go to www.campwinnebago.org.
