The Caledonia boys basketball team made it eight in a row with an
exciting 54-51 win over Lewiston-Altura last week. The road win
improved the Warriors’ Three Rivers Conference record to 13-2, and
their over-all record to 15-5.
“It was a good win on the road for us,” coach Josh Diersen said.
“Lewiston-Altura has a good team. We only beat them by three points at
our house earlier in the season. They are big in the middle, with a
6’5” center and 6’4” forward. Those two big guys disrupted out shots.”
The Warriors and Cardinals played a close first half, with CHS carving
out a 30-26 halftime lead. But the host team went on a run in the
second half and built a seven-point lead with eight minutes remaining
in the game.
Coach Diersen called a time out, settled his charges down, and the
Warriors went on a run of their own. The CHS run was highlighted
by a three point shot by sophomore guard Bobby Augedahl with three
minutes left in the game, which gave the Warriors the lead.
Once the Warriors took the lead, they went into a stall, forcing the
Cards to foul to get the ball back. The Warriors hit their free throws
down the final stretch for the three-point win.
Craig Loeffler led the Warrior offensive attack with 16 points. Zach
Gran added nine, Ryan Goetzinger had eight, Kody Moore had seven,
Augedahl had six, Kyle Runningen had five, Cody Haugstad had two and
Alex Klug had one point for the Warriors.
A busy schedule
The Warriors will be facing a busy and very tough schedule during the
next week. Tuesday, Feb. 19 the Warriors traveled to Elgin to take on
the 19-2 Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs. The ‘Dogs are a perfect
15-0 in the TRC and one of two teams to beat the Warriors in conference
play this season. The other team is Chatfield, which will bring a 12-3
TRC record to Caledonia Thursday night.
The Warriors then have to play a tough Fillmore Central team twice in
four nights, both Saturday, Feb. 23, and again next Tuesday, Feb.
26.
The make-up game with Fillmore Central, slated for last Thursday, was
cancelled a second time, due to the winter storm. It has been
re-scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23.
The Warriors will finish out the regular season at home against Wabasha-Kellogg Feb. 28.
