Investigation of break in and vandalism continues PDF Print

An investigation into an Easter weekend break in and vandalism of the former Caledonia Elementary School is still underway, according to Police Officer Allan Johnson.

According to Mike Nanoff, the owner of the building, an estimated $60,000 in damages was the result of the mid-April vandalism spree.

Nanoff, who does not live in Caledonia, has been trying to sell the former school complex, which was converted into a mall complex. He was to meet a prospective buyer, and arrived at the building several hours before the appointed time only to find the interior in shambles.

“There were holes knocked and kicked in the walls. Graffiti was spray painted all over. Windows were broken, doors pulled from their hinges, an above ground pool was slit and the building flooded. It even looks as if they had sledge hammers or other blunt instruments to punch holes in the ceilings. Somehow, they even damaged the roof. It’s a total mess,” Nanoff said last week.

Nanoff stated he had insurance to cover some of the damage, but it won’t be enough to cover all of the costs to repair the vandalism. And, he added, he doesn’t know if the repairs can be completed in time for the potential buyer.

“It sounds as if it was an excess of 20 kids involved in this,” Nanoff said. “I don’t know how long the investigation is going to take. I know the police department is really working on this.”

Johnson said that because it is an on-going investigation, he really couldn’t make any statements, except that there was major vandalism to the building in April and the investigation is ongoing.
