In order for small communities to survive and thrive, they must support one another.

It helps to have philanthropic neighbors like the Fischer Family Foundation.

Recently the advisory committee of the Webster and Marcella Fischer Foundation announced the funding of three grant requests totaling approximately $36,000 to non-profit organizations in Lewiston, Hokah and Spring Valley.

The Fischer Foundation donated $7,570 needed for upgrades to the squad car in the city of Hokah.

The foundation also made a donation in 2007 to the Hokah Fire Department for the jaws of life, and new turnout gear.

The Webster and Marcella Fischer Foundation is committed to making grants to qualified nonprofit organizations within the communities Security State Banks serve, which is Lewiston, Ostrander, Spring Valley, Wykoff and Hokah, and also the surrounding communities.

Since its inception in 2001, the foundation has approved grants totaling more that $531,000 to local non-profit organizations.

The foundation quickly recognized the need for their financial support given the rising costs associated with protecting the public.

“Protecting the residents of communities such as Hokah is always important but as costs escalate it is difficult to find the money necessary to fund all of the needs of the community,” said Mary Lindell, one of Webster and Marcella Fischer’s daughters. “We are happy to help the Hokah community provide safety and security for the resident’s of their city by assisting in upgrading their patrol car.”

The foundation’s focus for grant making is to promote education and cultural wellness, the arts, recreation, economic development, historic and environmental preservation and civic opportunities.

The Webster and Marcella Fischer Foundation is affiliated with Minnesota Community Foundation, a statewide community foundation that works with individuals and organizations to achieve their charitable goals.

Grant applications for funding in July, 2008 can be obtained from any office of Security State Bank and must be received by the Foundation prior to May 31, 2008.
