Over two months of memorizing lines, song lyrics, stage movements, designing sets, organizing wardrobes and a pit band, will be realized next week when Caledonia Area High School will be presenting “Once Upon a Mattress.”
The musical, which is the story about the princess and the pea, involves over 50 local students, grades seven through 12, as well as a few area adults.
“We held tryouts before the Christmas break,” director Eliott Kranz explained. “We started rehearsing right away in January. Kranz, along with Carrie Erickson, who is directing the pit band, and Kim Kranz, who is helping with the vocals, has been working with the students every Monday through Thursday for two hours after school.
“We’ve come a long ways,” Kranz said last week. “I’m sure we will be ready for our presentations March 7 through 9.”
This is the fifth musical the local high school will be presenting since Kranz arrived at CAHS. He noted that students trying out do not have to be members of the high school band or choir. Everyone is invited to try out, and the more participating, the better. After choosing musicals the first two years that had small casts, Kranz chose “Footloose,” and “Oklahoma” the past two years, which involved much larger casts.
“The bigger productions were better received by the students and the public,” Kranz noted. “When you’ve got 50 kids in the musical, you tend to attack larger audiences,” he added with a laugh.
“We have had very good community support for our musicals. Many people attend more than one performance and they’ve told me they really do look forward to our productions each year,” Kranz added.
“Once Upon a Mattress” will be held Friday and Saturday evenings, March 7 and 8, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. No advance tickets will be sold.
