Mary Ann Schmitz has waited 17 years to see John Conlee.
She will get that chance Friday night at the Houston County Fair when the popular country western singer performs at the grandstand at 9 p.m.
If everything works out, she will get to meet the famed “Rose Colored Glasses” singer 17 years after surgery for cancer kept her from a performance at the Dells where she had a ticket to see him.
Lorraine and Lori Thillen did go to the show and got to talk to Conlee. They told him of Mary Ann’s wish and he autographed a picture with a message wishing her well and gave them some ‘rose colored’ glasses.
The story goes something like this. Lorraine, Lori, and Mary Ann were at a Founder’s Days meeting and the Thillens encouraged her to join them at the Conlee concert. She agreed but the cancer diagnosis and resulting surgery and treatments kept her from attending.
“I just love country music,” Mary Ann says. “I also enjoy concerts and live bands,” she says. Her memories are of Union Hall (the dance floor that was once above Helen’s Beauty Salon), Henke’s in Brownsville, and the Avalon in La Crosse.
“I’ve watched him on television and with the Grand Ole Opry,” Mary Ann said. “I hope to meet him and thank him for the picture and its note. It was nice of him.”
