Houston County continued to receive good news concerning construction costs of the justice center, which will be built in downtown Caledonia beginning next spring. Demolition bids were opened at the Oct. 13 board meeting, which came in much lower than anticipated.

The low bid of $20,749 submitted by Generation X Construction of Rushford to raze three houses and the Sheriff Department’s garage was about $60,000 less than what was estimated last year. The county received six bids ranging from just under $60,000 to Generation X’s low bid to remove the three homes the county purchased several years ago and the stone five-stall garage to make way for the justice center.

“This bid is considerably less than we had anticipated,” Jail Administrator Mark Schiltz said.

“Our timing couldn’t be better with this,” Commissioner Dave Corcoran noted. “We’ve received very favorable interest rates and construction bids have been coming in at least 25 percent less than what the consultants had estimated 12 months ago.”

“Generation X was involved with much of the flood clean-up projects in Rushford last year,” Commissioner Larry Connery observed. “I’m sure they will do a good job.”

The six bids from lowest to highest included:

• Generation X Construction of Rushford- $20,749;

• Travis Zenke Construction of La Crescent- $22,425;

• Mike Rogich of Caledonia- $32,675;

• Jason Van Gundy of Houston- $36,500;

• Brandon Olson of Houston- $37,384;

• Kruckow Rock Products of Caledonia- $59,748.

A motion by Commissioner Bob Augedahl and seconded by Corcoran to award the low bid to Generation X was unanimously approved.

Asbestos abatement bids

The county received three bids for the asbestos abatement of the three houses and garage. the low bid of $7,900 was submitted by A&F Consulting Group, Inc. of Rochester. The other two bids were $9,058 from Asbesbegon, LLC of Houston and $11,994 from Danewick-Poole Environmental, Inc. of Rochester.

A motion to accept the low bid made by Commissioner Tom Bjerke and seconded by Corcoran was unanimously approved.

Official name

For more than a decade the proposed jail/justice facility has been referred to as the “criminal justice center.” The board agreed on the official name. It will be known as the Houston County Justice Center.

The work to raze the three houses and the county’s garage will begin in November. The ground-breaking for the Houston County Justice Center is scheduled to begin around April 15.
