A community celebration in the winter, the summer, or both? That’s what Arien O’Heron and the other members of the Caledonia Founders Day Committee are trying to decide.
According to O’Heron, the committee, which currently consists of 14 members, is in the process of reorganizing…everything from changing their legal name to changing the events and activities they will be sponsoring and coordinating. O’Heron sent a questionnaire out to members of the Caledonia Chamber of Commerce, as well as other community leaders, to solicit input for a meeting that will be held March 13.
The questions asked in the email included:
• Would you like us to keep the Chili & Chicken Drummie Supper Fun Night? If yes, would a date other than the last Friday in January be better?
• When would you like Caledonia’s city festival? Summer or winter. (If we went to summer, we wouldn’t eliminate the lighted night parade or the Santa Sing-a-long.)
• If the city festival was in the summer, what activities would you like to see? Parade, softball tournaments, kids games, vehicle fair, kick ball tournament, bean bag tournament, raffle, other events?
• If we kept Winter Wonderland and eliminated our softball tournament, what new activities would you like to see? (We did the lighted night parade, Santa sing-a-long, dj/band, snowflake hunt, trees around downtown, bean bag tournament, holiday lighting contest, and Bingo at local business.
“For the last two years we have tried Winter Wonderland the first full weekend in December,” O’Heron stated in the email. “Other local organizations also had events this same weekend and we tried to make it even bigger. Before that, a prior group of individuals on the committee had Founders Days in June. Besides the Winter Wonderland, we hold a Summer Tournament and Family Fun Fest in June where we have a softball tournament, bean bag tournament, kids’ games and more, in January we have our Chili and Chicken Drummie Supper Fun Night, and have Bingo at the Houston County Fair.
“What we are trying to do is downsize – pick between having the city festival in the summer or the winter and the possibility of eliminating the Chili Supper and holding a raffle during the city festival. We are also moving towards giving a portion of our proceeds back into the community through various programs. The more information we can get from the community, the better decisions we can make,” the email concluded.
