Construction on Highway 26 between Lansing and New Albin is nearly finished for the year. Project engineer Ron Loecher estimates that construction will continue for about two more weeks as workers continue to pave the new shoulder. They will also lay the first layer of asphalt across the full road.

When the road is finished it will include a bike accommodation lane. It is not a lane that is specifically designated for bikes, but it will still create significantly more room for cyclists and pedestrians. “I’m certain that it will attract cyclists,” says Loecher.

Use of the pilot car will continue until construction is finished for the year. The choice to use the pilot car over a detour is due in large part to a public information meeting that was held prior to the beginning of construction. “We consulted local businesses and [the pilot car] is what they preferred,” says Loecher.

Construction will continue next summer as one more layer of asphalt will be necessary for the finished road.

Loecher advises that drivers continue to use caution as they drive through construction areas.
