The Caledonia boys basketball team’s 11-game winning streak came to an
end last week in Preston when the Fillmore Central Falcons topped the
local cagers 78-60. The Warriors won their final regular season game
over Wabasha-Kellogg 75-45 Thursday night in Caledonia. CHS finished
the regular season with a 20-6 record (17-3 in the Three Rivers
Conference) and were seeded fourth in the Section One AA East
Sub-section. They will play number five seed Chatfield Saturday at 2:30
p.m. at RCTC.

The Warriors had defeated the Falcons by 11 points just four days
earlier in a make-up game at Caledonia. But as coach Josh Diersen
pointed out, “you can’t win games against tough teams when you turn the
ball over 22 times and only hit five of 15 free throws.”
The Warriors were up by two points, 36-34, but cold shooting in the
second half, coupled with very physical play in the second half by the
Falcons swung the momentum FC’s way.
The Warriors also ran into foul trouble in the second half, with senior
guard Craig Loeffler fouling out at the seven-minute mark, and junior
forward Ryan Goetzinger hitting the pine for good several minutes later.
“We just didn’t get into the flow of the game, like we usually do,”
Diersen noted. “Fillmore Central has a good team, and they played us
very well last Thursday night. And when you only shoot 15 free throws
in the game, while your opponent shoots 42, it’s tough to win.”
The Falcons made 25 of 42 shots from the charity line. The Warriors were 0 for 8 in the second half.
“We learned some things from that game,” Diersen added.
Loeffler led the offensive attack, scoring 17 points and dishing out
seven assists before fouling out. Goetzinger had 16 points and eight
rebounds. Kody Moore had 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
Kyle Runningen added six points, Bobby Augedahl and Cody Haugstad each
had three points and Zach Gran had two points.

It was “Senior Night” last Thursday night when the Warriors hosted
Wabasha-Kellogg. Diersen started five seniors for their final home game
of the year and senior Dustin King opened the game up with a three
pointer.
The Warriors jumped out to a quick double-digit lead and never looked back. They led by 20, 42-22 at the half.
The Warriors cut their turnovers down to just nine, hit 8 of 20 treys,
shot 53 percent from the field and made 9 of 15 freethrows (60 percent).
Moore led all scorers with 16 points. He also had four rebounds and
four steals. Goetzinger had 13 points and seven rebounds. Gran had nine
points and four rebounds, Loeffler had seven points and three steals,
Alex Klug had six points and four assists, Augedahl had four points and
six assists, King had three points and Ethan Lapham, Alex Schleich,
Haugstad, and Mitch Reiser each had two
points.
