In basketball, a good school of thought is if you force your opponent
to commit more turnovers than they have points, then the chances you’ll
win the game are probably pretty good.
Caledonia brought down their best “thieves” for the contest against La
Crescent and the arms swinging, the constant pokes and jabs at the
basketball were too much for the Lancers to handle.
The Lancers wound up losing by a final score of 46-23. They scored 11 fewer points than they had in turnovers (34).
“We came out and played great team defense again, we did not allow an
attempt for the first 4 minutes of the game,” said head coach Scott
Sorenson. “La Crescent did not score till 5 minutes into the
game, that is simply getting it done defensively.”
The win means the Warriors will await the winner of the Winona Cotter-Plainview-Elgin-Millville game.
The 46 points reflected a poor night from the field for the Lady
Warriors who shot just 35 percent from the floor (18-of-52), but their
defense was enough to get the job done.
“Offensively, we were getting good shots to start the game, but they
just were not falling, I was really proud of how the girls did
not get frustrated, they kept attacking,” said Sorenson.
The Warriors were again led by Libby Augedahl who came in with a double-double, 14 points, 11 boards.
Cassie Gran came to play, scoring seven points and grabbing eight of the team’s 37 rebounds.
Sarah Colleran scored nine points against a good team.
“La Crescent is a good team and to hold them to 23 points is just
amazing,” said the coach. “We all owe that to our in your face team
defense. When we talk on defense we are pretty solid. We played
with a lot of heart, passion and determination to win.”
