“Things really went well with the clean-up. Our crews worked 24 hours in a 26-hour span. They really put in the time. But with a snow storm like that one, it’s best to get things cleaned up right away. We received some favorable comments from people in town. I really think they appreciated the hard work our city crews put in.”
That’s the way Caledonia Interim Clerk/Administrator Mike Gerardy summed up the street-clearing operations following last week’s 15-inch snow storm.
According to Gerardy, the crews went out around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday during the height of the storm to begin the street-clearing process. By 6 a.m. they had all the streets opened up and switched over to hauling the massive amount of snow that had been piled up or windrowed throughout town.
Because there was such little traffic in Caledonia Wednesday, the snow-hauling process went quite well, Gerardy noted.
“Usually we’re fighting a lot of traffic when we’re hauling all the snow out of town that we plowed up into windrows when we clear the streets. But there weren’t a lot of people moving around Wednesday morning. And there was a lot of snow to haul. We usually do that later in the evening, but decided to just keep working throughout the morning and afternoon.”
The city crews had all the snow hauled out of Caledonia later that night, took a two-hour break and then went back at it clearning the last of the snow Mother Nature a continued to deposit during the day on Wednesday, and clearing the alternate side of the streets. That part of the snow-removing process was completed around 4 a.m. Thursday.
“We had a few snow birds we had to have towed, but for the most part, people were pretty good about following our alternate winter parking ordinance,” Gerardy added.
Winter parking rules
The parking ban is in effect from Nov. 1 to March 31 in Caledonia regardless if the city receives snow or not from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on the odd-numbered side of streets on odd-numbered days and the even-numbered side of streets on even-number days.
