Got some boxes of slightly used books you don’t know what to do with? Or are you looking for some inexpensive new reads?
In either case, the Houston County Historical Society’s 15th Annual Book Sale, which will be held March 20 and 21, is just what the doctor ordered.
Persons all over the county donate thousands of books, LP records, cassettes, videos, DVDs and CDs for the annual book sale.
The sale, which is held in the old Caledonia Presbyterian Church at 404 East Main Street, includes a large selection of children’s books, history, romance, biographies, fiction, military literature, music, westerns, natural history, religion, inspirational, sports, cooking, foreign novels and books with large print.
“It’s incredible how many books people donate for this,” Historical Society President Shirley Johnson said. “It’s a lot of work to sort through all the boxes of books that are donated and get them organized. Paul and Joan Wiste, who have served as our co-managers of this from the beginning, work so hard to get all the books organized into their proper categories.”
The book sale raised over $4,000 last year and supplemental funds of $800 was provided by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. All of the proceeds from the book sale benefit the Houston County Historical Society archives and artifacts.
Some of the historic and resource books are not put up for sale, but become a welcomed addition to the society’s reference library.
The annual book sale, which began in 1996, wasn’t a big money maker from the start, according to Johnson. Looking back through her files, she reported that in 1996, $665 was raised. The following year interest waned a bit, as the amount generated was $562. Interest in the book sale grew and in 2001 the Historic Society raised over $2,000.
“This is one of our major money makers for the year,” Johnson said. “It wouldn’t be possible without the generous people who donate books every year, the hard working people who help us prepare for this and all of the people who turn out each year and buy books,” Johnson added.
If you have items to donate, you can bring them to the main museum at the Houston County Fairgrounds, at 104 History Lanes on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. prior to the sale. Or you can call one of the following phone numbers to have someone pick them up:
