The Caledonia boys basketball team found out why La Crescent had 26 wins and only one defeat so far this season, when the neighboring Lancers handed CHS an 82-63 loss. The defeat in the Section One AA East Sub-section game on March 11, put an end to an impressive 20-7 season for the Warriors.

La Crescent utilized the same run-and-gun style the Warriors have succeeded with all season, and jumped out to 10-0 and 14-2 leads.

The taller Lancers controlled the boards, out-rebounding CHS 44-29, and a streaking Ian Anderson torched the Warriors for 36 points, including 11 uncontested lay-ups.

The stubborn Warriors weren’t about to cry Uncle, however. Following a 12-0 La Crescent run, which pushed the Lancer lead to 39-15, the feisty Warriors went on an 11-0 run of their own to pull within seven points, 39-26 as the first half came to a close.

Anderson and company took off at the beginning of the second half the same way they started the game, with another 10-0 run to push their lead back to 17 points, 49-26, which put the game out of reach for Caledonia.

The smaller Warriors were forced to attack from the perimeter, and put up 31 treys, hitting 12. But it just wasn’t Caledonia’s night, as they fell by 19 points, 82-63.

“La Crescent came out on fire, and really took it to us at the beginning of the game,” coach Josh Diersen said. “La Crescent has a very good team. They are so tall, and run the floor very well. There’s a reason why they only have one loss this year.

“I was proud of the way our kids didn’t give up, and made that big run right before the half. We pulled within seven points, but they came back with another run. That one, we just couldn’t overcome.

“We had a great season, winning 20 games,” Diersen continued. “The kids worked very hard, they stuck with it, and we had a successful season.”

Senior guard Craig Loeffler, who fouled out of the game with about four minutes remaining, led the Warriors with 20 points. Bobby Augedahl chipped in 12 points, Kody Moore had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds, Ryan Goetzinger had nine points, Kyle Runningen and Cody Haugstad each had three, and Zach Gran, Isaac Fruechte and Michael Ideker each had two points.

This was the final high school basketball game for Caledonia’s five seniors, Loeffler, Moore, Gran,  Alex Klug, and Dustin King.
