The Caledonia Lady Warriors basketball team have relied on their press defense to carry them to state. A quick Jordan team who moved well away from the ball weren’t intimidated by the Warrior’s press. In fact, they answered the bell Wednesday in the MSHSL Class 1AA state tournament opener cruising past the press and to a 74-61 win.

The Warriors faced what head coach Scott Sorenson would describe as “the real deal,” in point guard Brittany Chambers for Jordan. She led all scorers with 29 points and was just one rebound shy of a triple double as she finished with 29, 11 assists and nine rebounds.

The game slipped away from the Warriors early as a 7-1 run by the Jaguars to close out the first half led to a 10 point deficit, 39-29.

Things didn’t get better for the Warriors after the break as the Jaguars opened the second stanza with another 16-1 run to increase their lead to 25 points.

The Warriors fought back and should hold their heads high as they dove for loose balls, hustled and remained relentless in their press, even when it was answered.

However, in the end Jordan was  just too much for the Warriors to handle.

Jordan scored on seven of its first nine possession to begin the second half, and the Warriors didn’t ever really find their shot.

Normally the Warriors shoot pretty well from the floor. However, on this day, the girls would hit just nine shots from the field in each half. They  finished the game 18-of-47 shooting.

Caledonia went on a 12-4 run to make it close at the end but the Jaguars by that time had it all but wrapped up.

Megan King led the Warriors with 14 points. Laquita Becker scored 13 points and drove to the hoop almost every time she had the ball. Libby Augedahl scored 11 points and Alicia Fruechte scored seven points including back-to-back three points shots which were fun to see go down.
